There is very little natural chemistry on between the actors on Y&R compared to what you find on DOOL or AMC. The writers are on Y&R are convinced (wrongly) that their pens determine chemistry (thus the many painful weeks of Billy/Mac, a story I wish I had FFed) and do not play to their actors natural strengths & affinities.

Jack is still my fave of the four, but that's really just because of PB's performances. On paper, Jack is pretty useless. And really, they all are. Those are grown adults with adult or nearly adult children. Any day now, their kids could make them grandparents. The sad thing about the quad is that you could send all of them to Bold & Beautiful and they would fit right in with the aging bimbos (Brooke, Ridge, Nick, Taylor.)

On Days, Sami has twins by two different fathers. They should do the hat trick with Sharon and give her triplets by three different fathers. Take that, DOOL!

I think that is the concern that some people have...that it is too plot-driven.

That said, I have to remind us about the period from January to August 2008...when we dialed back from "plot-driven" in the post LML era. The shows ratings sank at a faster rate than at any other time in the post Bill Bell era. The weekly ratings declines were atrocious.

In the time since JG left, the ratings have SLOWLY started climbing up (positive trend, surprisingly), but still haven't recovered all the ground lost during those disastrous months. So, a little "plot driven" may be needed to save the show.

I will not deny that there have been a lot of OMG moments...including when Nick said he wanted Sharon back on Friday...and that is going to keep some viewers coming back. Even though I now hate that weather-vaning pig because of it.

I have been totally thinking that. Nick and Sharon have become Ridge and Brooke. I didn't need to see that!

Y&R is very character-driven, even to today. The issue is WHAT KIND OF CHARACTERS are on screen. Nick has regressed so much that he disgusts me. And I'm sorry but Michelle Stafford is wrong. JM can't just smile and make it all better. An actor like James Scott might be able to use his charm to save someone like the current incarnation of Nick, but JM cannot.

Where are the characters to root for? Where are the characters with noble qualities? Where is our version of Jack Snyder (even if he can be a jerk, he's still a hero)? Where is our Vicki Lord? Where is our Angie Hubbard (and don't tell me it's Olivia!)? There is something wrong with the show when the root-for character of the week is a sociopath sadist torturing an innocent woman.

Maybe that's why I want Raoul to stay. I see him as a potential hero. I don't know. Are there any characters on the show you're rooting for?

Which obviously is not true. Billy acts resentful when Chloe insists that he cares for his daughter because he wants to run after Mac. He won't even pick her up when she is fussing because he is mooning over Mac. Billy has no motivation for staying with Chloe and Delia.

Amen. I love flawed, grey characters. But it was so nice, after Nick got together with Phyllis...that he was such an honest straight-talking man with integrity. He was a dude who tried to help Noah cope, helped his epilepsy rattled dad build shelves, played charades with his friends, and tried to be a good friend and lover to his redheaded gal. I found him relatable, and always striving to make the right choices.

That's all over now, and I won't perseverate. But it is a loss.

And you are right. There is not one man on the canvas now--except maybe Murphy (and I'm worried about him, because he BRIBED the governor, no matter what he said)--that's just straight up, straight forward, honest, no agenda. Well, I guess JT. But I don't get to see him struggle and make good choices. I don't get to see him, period.

Amen.

I didn't... but in this age, when Y&R is the only soap that actually bothers to hide some of their spoilers and give vague info, who would know in such detail what will happen in the next six months... it's all fanfiction, I believe.

I mean, Billy is real. Many young fathers are like this...think Levi Johnson (I'm speculating).

Billy, in isolation, would be fine. At this point, though, we have TWO stable interesting couples (Michael-Lauren, Murphy-Kay), but we don't really get to explore their relationships. I mean brownies-in-bed and gin-games-in-bed were TERRIFIC. But we don't get nearly enough of that, and we don't see these couples -- as couples -- solving problems together. Lauren was absent during the Silver Chipmunk saga, and that was really Amber's story anyway. Kay-Murphy have real potential, but one assumes they're headed to a ride on the backburner.

I know many disagree, but I really loved having one young-ish, vital, sexy, happy, funny couple that was not all Sturm und Drang, front-burner.

I'd be better with their demise...certainly their descent into this agony state...if there was another couple filling the void.

JT-Victoria are really too mild and soft for that. And Bloom-Engen (note, I'm not saying Heather-Adam) sparkled...but that was never pursued as Adam got turned into what he is now.

Noah has real potential for "young love", but not with his Edens. Kevin-Jana and Daniel-Amber are clearly on the road to ruin, and we get little insight into the romantic dimensions of their lives. (I'm sure I'm alone, but I think that quad could be much more interesting as Bob-Carol-Ted-Alice anyway--talk about shattering some daytime taboos).

My only hope is that

is a romantic lead, and a strong one. But I see no available females for him. Don't say Colleen.

And yet even while mooning over Mackenzie he asked Chloe & Deila to come back when she moved out.

Billy loves Delia & cares about Chloe.

If he wanted to leave he would've left but he wants to have his cake & eat it too.

    • Today's show was good. The only part I didn't care for were the Derek/Ashley scenes. I think they are bland together and Derek is very bland by himself. He is the least interesting character on the show IMO. I don't think they have much chemistry together. I appreciated Jan's reaction to Leslie. I like how regular/realistic her and Mona are as characters. Jan came across as very believable of being appalled and even hurt by Leslie's treatment of them and towards Eva in the diner.  Leslie continues to try and manipulate people with IMO her fake caring routine, only to show her true colors after she's confronted/called out for her treatment of others. I continue to dislike the way she mistreats Eva. Speaking of Eva she was great again today. I love her and I like how Martin comforted her in the diner. I liked that Vernon showed concern for her as well. They (especially Martin) will come around quicker to her before others (like the Dupree women) will. I also am glad to see her and Ted continue to bond and him behaving like a father towards her/helping her. He's the only one in her life who is fully trying to stand by her. I look forward to seeing their relationship grow.
    • Xander was screaming at Felicity.  He did do something wrong.  Felicity was clearly upset by it and Cat/Chad told him to stop.  That's fair.  No one deserves to be yelled at their job-and even I think this plot point is too preachy.  It's not acceptable behavior for anyone to do that.
    • When Derek finally appears with only a towel, and his chest and pecs/nipples are finally shown, I say yes.

    • Now, actually not. That thought had not even made it into my head, so, no, so far anyway, I've not seen that. Haven't seen today yet. What you're describing is warped & I think she's feeling genuine empathy & sister bond.
    • Xander was the bigger person apologizing to Cat when he didn't do anything wrong.  he wasn't yelling at Felicity whatsoever, he was asking if she possibly had given them the wrong order by mistake.  He was trying to get to the bottom of what was going on, but Chad/Cat were trying to white knight Felicity even though Felicity was being treated just like anyone else in that situation.   She was the one to bring the order out to them, and usually the person that brings the order out is the one that puts the order together.    I'm still getting a read on the Cat character.   I think she seems to work well when interacting with everyone other than Chad.   Perhaps the new writers can move Cat out of Chad's orbit into another orbit. Paulina has been written quite well the few times she's been on since the writer change.  I think Jackee is enjoying the new writing.. you can tell when she's on screen.
    • LOL - well, Peter was included in the grandkids' section, each named specifically with their $100K trusts.  It must have been the abs...

In Henry's will, he said it had to do with Hart having a chance at being a better person than his father, since his father isn't providing for him (I'm paraphrasing here, but it was about Roger).  Still a little surprised...
    • I'm glad the truth is all out regarding Roman and Kate's secrets from each other, and also happy Roman didn't make much of the letter forgery, because why would he even care? They are a good solid couple. However, not to be mean, when Roman had his little flashback at the DiMera mansion he seemed more like an old man that was lost. How wonderfully aggravating that we still don't know what the hell happened with Johnny the night EJ was shot. I can't wait to find out. I've my feelings clear on Paulina, but she was definitely written much more adult and Jackée even seemed a bit toned down, for the better. Nothing boring about either scenes for me. I like the little drama between Xander and Cat, for the newness of the interaction alone. AnnaLynne McCord is much better at material where she's not acting dementedly lovesick. Seeing that side to Cat was integral to remembering she's not a moron, and I am definitely intrigued by the heck could be calling her. Kevin Lambert returning is a cute little surprise. I never watched Chadwick Hopson in the role though, was he any good?

    • I would love if Sarah were already pregnant and then, even with the reveal that she knew about the letter, that she and Xander would work on things to keep their family intact. But I fear that time is running out. Whatever Philip is doing is probably going to mess up everything. I do like that Kayla and Sarah mentioned the Horton legacy with the hospital and that Kayla would much prefer Xander financing it over EJ. Xander is suddenly Horton adjacent. Belle is as usual a massive hypocrite whining about 'everything' Xander has done to her family when EJ raped her sister, kept her cancer ridden toddler from her, helped Nicole keep the baby she had stolen from Sami for a year, shot her dad in the head, and as recently as last year railroaded her innocent teen nephew into prison where he was beaten up. Sure, Xander shot Brady and Marlena but both of them seem to be over it. Cat should have just graciously accepted Xander's apology. I actually like that he treated Felicity like anybody else and did not coddle her. I hope we see him apologizing though. I wonder if Cat knows that Xander shot their granddad Kon dead last year? She might like him better if she knew. I wonder who is calling her? My money is on Gwen for some reason. I feel like Cat and Chad will get comfy and then we will find out Abby is out there and Gwen has had her. EJ and Cat were far more palatable than Chad and Cat, but EJ makes everybody easier to tolerate. Roman and Kate vs Johnny and Paulina... not sure which were more boring. I guess I'll go with Roman and Kate because he speaks so darn slowly now. Philip is entertaining the heck out of me. I hope he ends up the hero who saves Bo. I think it would be hysterical if he managed to get his hands on the Versovix and EJ ends up buying a useless money pit of a hospital.
    • I just start to laugh thinking about the interview where Leslie related its being Tom Donovan who talked her into doing GH & then, once she was settled in & looked around for him, he had JUST vanished!!
