Y&R: Week of May 25, 2009

In principle, Y&R is dripping in legacy females (Colleen, Lily, Abby, Victoria, etc.).

True, we did not see them all grow up. But, when cast correctly, that didn't matter. (It doesn't matter that we didn't see Billy grow up either).

I fully acknowledge that killing Cassie was a HUGE choice, and very risky one. But in this case, I think it was TOTALLY worth it. This is such a deep rip in the canvas, we understand how it could have so fully f*cked up Nick and Sharon. So fully that the fallout is still playing -- in high crescendo (sorry...too symphonic?) today. TOTALLY worth it.

That's just my opinion...not trying to convince anyone. But for me, it was a truly transcendent moment -- literally, one that made Y&R better than good -- GREAT.

The point isn't acting ability, having a character and actor grow up with the audience builds a special type of bond that most soaps don't have, It creates a certain familiarity that can go a long way.

If Grimes didn't want to stay, they could have written her out without killing her. That way, they could bring her back whenever they wanted if Grimes wished to return.

I never liked Nick or Sharon and had no real use for Cassie, but when she died it about broke my heart. It was embarrassing how I sobbed. Thank goodness I was alone. Watching the clip still makes me tear up after all this time. From that point, I had so much compassion for Nck and Sharon afterward. I wanted Nick and Sharon desperately to comfort each other and find their way through it together. I have never forgiven Nick for abandoning Sharon and turning to Phyllis. I still have a soft spot for Sharon, but I never want her back with Nick. What he did was beyond terrible. So for me, Cassie's death definitely changed how I viewed Nick and Sharon and it is one of the few deaths that has really had long lasting fall out.

What do you mean? I'm fearing this is a Gloria dig! :) And yes, that earns a smilie.

Totally spot-on correct! I HATED Nick. As he grew into family man, I liked him a bit more...but he kept screwing up (literally) with Grace. But Cassie's death, and grieving WITH her parents...totally changed my level of investment in and compassion for Sharon and Nick.

He's trying my sympathy right now, though.

I knew it....

That is so true. Right until the end I was expecting Victor's doctor (or something!) to save the day. Then when I realized it wasn't going to happen I started weeping (then my mother the non soap watcher came into the room and said "what the hell is wrong with you?" ). It's impossible to explain that kind of reaction to people who don't watch soaps. Now, I am never spoiler free because I don't want to be ambushed like that again. If I could change it, I probably would, but Sharon Case was perfect in those scenes and I am not a Sharon Abbott fan as a rule.

Yes, but having her die also reminds the audience how tragic life can be. It would have been nice seeing Camryn continue to grow up on screen, but four years later and her death is still affecting the canvas and viewers. I think in the end, the death itself worked nicely (not the best phrasing of words, LoL).

TOTALLY. Exactly.

I had no CLUE that Cassie was going to die. But suddenly, when the doctors were being so pessimistic with Victor, I turned to my fellow viewers and said "Oh my God, they're not going to KILL Cassie, are they? They'd never do that!" I still get goosebumps thinking about that moment.

When Barry Manilow did that montage song ("I am your child") I knew what was coming. For DAYS I was gripped by the horror of watching her march to death, and nothing ANY of us could do about it. Because it was Cassie, it felt like a real personal tragedy. The montages clarified how long we'd loved her.

Best. death. ever. (IMO)

He's such a stuffed shirt d-bag. I don't know. I need a woman to humanize him again.

I actually liked that Carmen Mesta helped him find his jazz side. But now...he's a philandering indecisive horndog...just like Nick.

Are you serious?

Really?

It was superb.

    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
    • I tend to think that Chad will actually listen to Jen (this time). And that will be the next stumbling block in their relationship, which will open the possibilities for Cat to seek another member of their love triangle... To iterate my earlier thought, I am also not a fan of the person Melissa Reeves, but the character of Jennifer looks so chic this week, especially in comparison to Hope (and Gabi).  That blunt haircut is a winner.
    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. Their connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters. All this talk of Jennifer being in the wrong regarding Cat is absurd. Jennifer is not being villainized in any way, shape, or form, she's just being allowed to actually be human, which adds odds to the obstacle of Chad and Cat eventually getting together. All inner conflict. Keep it coming!
    • Hahaha. Jean Hackney, Angelica Nero, and the Falcon Crest henchwomen were all straight out of a James Bond movie.
