Oh, balderdash. Unless there is a LICK of evidence of this from ANY source, this kind of speculation makes no sense. Why would ANYONE put themselves through the effort of penning a show if she didn't want to be there. Especially MAB. She doesn't need the money, acclaim, nothing.

And it is equally balderdash that she'd do this as a "good wife" to Bill Jr. As a 'good wife', she'll do his Christmas cards. Not run the family freakin' mothership.

Yeah, the fact she abandoned daytime for 20 years before the stike showed how much of a passion she has for soap writing.

MAB's doing fine, the show is creatively strong now. There is plenty of evidence (critical support, general fan satisfaction on many message boards, ratings momentum in the gain direction).

It's all reletively subjective. Sorry, but you're the last person that should question anyone else's objectivity in regards to this show.

The first part is valid...it's a biased negative opinion, but we're all allowed to have our biases. I happily claim mine.

Well, at least that's out in the open. ;)

In concur with alphanguy74 that Y&R has gone through previous periods much weaker than this. Moroever, even that construction honors the biased opinion that Y&R is presently "weak"---which it is not.

I'm sure you made excuses in your mind even back them with those weaker periods as you do now.

So, even if you discount me, you cannot discount the data. But you will  )

What solid correlation does quality have to do with ratings? Ryan's Hope and Santa Barbara at their peaks all had critical acclaim and very loyal cult followings, yet neither lit the ratings on fire.

Yawn re: psychos.

Yet, you're the one eating this Mary Jane s-it up.

With regard to the violent suggestion above (and no I can't laugh at it--any more than I could laugh at the proposal for clitorectomys or breast removals or cutting noses off)...I have a feeling some of the anti-Nick&Phyllis brigade also would have hated Thirtysomething. That, like Phick, was an exploration of coupledom that was often talky or about mood. It was about how couples related together, often without a huge plot.

I loved Thirtysomething, and I fail to see the connection.

That's why I like this couple. They are a flawed pair, trying to do the best, often making mistakes...but still drawn together magnetically in powerful ways that they communicate to the audience.

Again, not in the writing or in the acting - for me at least.

Mark and alphanguy...

Is part, bigger part, of your satisfaction with Maria Arena's The Young and the Restless that it gives you a bit of (Proustian) lost time? Nostalgia, memories? How much of your satisfaction comes from how "beautifully written" these stories are?

Thank you! I'm not sure some negative posters actually watch/listen to the show.

That was a really interesting scene because Phyllis was desperate to believe it was just sex. Blowing it off as a one time thing that was just physical, but deep down she knew it wasn't that simple. That it wasn't just a meaningless one night stand. I thought that was some good acting from MS. She played someone in love desperately trying to stay in denial very well.

So for me, if it actually was just a one night stand I can see how someone would put their family above that. When you know your spouse is actually in love with someone else, that's a lot harder to swallow and I think Phyllis shouldn't much longer. I like the idea of a couple more years of Phick, but it seems to me things are about top explode.

Do white writers even realize how big a deal this is to a Black family?

Lily has married two white guys. Has she ever even dated a black man? I have to believe that would come up in a convo with Neil or Devon.

Y&RWorldTurner, if I remember correctly...

Did you say, a long time ago, that Lorraine Broderick's style is unsuited for The Young and the Restless? Or was that about Wendy Riche? I'm forgetting...

The writers wouldn't go there... Just wait when she snaps us another one.

Did Curlee ever manage to pen a #1 soap?

She never inherited the #1 soap and managed to drive it to record lows in a short amount of time either.

Did she positively influence the ranking of her soap during her tenure? I'm not being provocative here. I'm genuinely interested. Did she improve the commercial success of her soap during her tenure? I'm asking beyond her apparent writing excellence.

This is what she told FrenchFan, and you must take into account that GL switched to 10 AM in the morning in many places during the early 90's too.

CZ: Most fans think your run was the last golden era for the show (the ratings went from 5.2 to 5.4 with even a peak at 5.6 and you won the Emmy Award for Best Writing in 1993). What do you think made the show special back then?

NCD: The ratings actually came up from a good deal lower from 5.2. I think we were at something like a 4.6 when the show began to gather momentum. Mainly due to a burgeoning sense that we all had, writers, actors, producers alike, that we had our hands on something rare. There was a palpable sense of enthusiasm in the studio...people started stopped in their tracks to watch fellow actors taping scenes that were funny and real and moving. The dialogue was crisp, and the scenes well constructed. And those veteran actors knew it. It was thrilling and we all felt a part of it.

To persist in the face of unrealistic expections...I don't know...do you feel that is the healthiest course?

I refuse to accept meiorce storytelling. IF you feel the need to love eveything about this show, go ahead, I don't have to.

Of course, I do blame the chipmunk entirely on Sheffer :). That seems to sync with his slightly warped sense of humor :). It was fine for a day, but it should not have come to represent Kevin's inner demons.

Yes, and MAB let it happen and had the power to veto it.

Neither, I think.

I gave Riche credit for what she managed to do with GH when she inherited it. She turned that show around and took it away from the Monty-isms that people claimed the show could never step away from. She did the impossible with a seemingly damaged show at the time, and I think Y&R needs someone like that.

I wonder how Lily will react when she realizes Cane has deceived her...

[insert common Valley Girl exclamation] or something more interesting.

Please get hooked on drugs!! Please!

Honey, I'm sure the writer's DON'T HAVE A CLUE. The only reason I know this is because my best friend is black, otherwise I'd be totally ignorant as well. Rowell DID have a point needing a black writer on staff to help write for the Winters. I just disgaree that it needed to be HER.

Hmmmmm... Please leave town!

You know they'd never let Saint Lily go there.

Victoria Rowell did though. When of the many reasons I miss her.
