The latest on GL going to Lifetime

OH COME ON DUDE!

A bank merger is a face-saving move. Acquiring a television show wouldn't be something hush-hush. It would be a big deal and the supposed new network would be saying "We're exploring all possibilities."

Lifetime has no interest in original(or even classic) daytime soaps. Period.

If there was any sort of interest in GL moving to another network, it would have happened by now. The same way it happened with Passions when it moved to DirecTV.

I can't wait till this show is six feet under, so these in-denial fans can move on and stop talking about Lifetime, MTV, Logo, CW, WE, Spice, G4 and Discovery acquiring the show. I swear, half of SON's topics are made up of, "Will (insert network here) pick up GL?"

You guys are actually making me look forward to a lame Dating Game/Let's Make a Deal update!

Nah, it's going to Telemundo. The entire cast is going to have to learn how to speak Spanish.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I want GL to go out with DIGNITY. I don't want to be stuck with some freaky cliffhanger ending because they thought they were gonna go somewhere else, but found out too late that that wasn't the case. Screw that. Everyone would be better off if they just wrote the hell out of the show this summer and let it end beautifully. I can't believe that there are people who think that SEVENTY-TWO YEARSSSSSSSSS isn't long enough for any TV/radio show to be around. It's tiiiiiiiime!!!!!!!!!

There are always going to be some fans who won't want to just let go. That CBS is replacing it with a knockoff of a long ago game show also doesn't suggest people should look ahead to innovation or inspiration. Some fans who recently started watching are probably even more unhappy to see the show end. Every soap has people who explore their options after cancellation, and I'm sure they will move on in time.

I don't think people should look at the Dating Game and/or Let's Make a Deal and/or Pyramid remake with such contempt. Soaps were at their best (ratings-wise) when they were scheduled alongside many, many game shows in daytime. It was only when the networks started to expand soaps to an hour and do away with most of their game shows that soaps ratings really began to plummet.

They are bringing in game shows to replace soaps now, instead of help them. I can see why soap fans wouldn't want to embrace another factor that will help lead to the death of the genre.

I don't mind a game show update, I'm just saying it's hard to say GL fans should get over the show and embrace the future when that future is a game show that was last popular either 25 years ago or 35 years ago.

Who's to say that game shows won't help soaps? The chances are slim, I know, but it shouldn't have to be either one or the other in daytime. Soaps and game shows can cohabitate. Some soaps will have to go or cut down to make room, but I'd rather there be both together than none at all. Imagine a daytime full of syndication.

Game shows are cheaper than soaps, much cheaper, and CBS is already getting rid of one soap and plan to get rid of ATWT by next year. Soaps are no longer seen as money machines, so unless something big changes, I think game shows (or perhaps at ABC, talk shows) will be used to replace soaps. I guess it depends on whether the current soaps can pull themselves up in time.

Exactly. Game show fans have similar contempt towards soaps, which is kind of sad considering many people consider game shows in the same vein as soaps. Fluffy, trash TV.

Even if the current soaps we know and love die, the genre may pick itself back up in 5-15 years. Everything runs in a cycle. Look at the game show as a perfect example of that.

I was really hoping for a Pyramid update myself. I really loved Dick Clark's version where they stuck by the rules and didn't give anything away.

I don't know if I can see them ever creating new shows which are scripted, because of the extra cost. I guess 5-10 years is a long way off, so we don't know what may happen.

I do enjoy game shows, I watch GSN every day. I do wish they could try out a new game show format, and if they won't, then revive a daytime version of Password, or What's My Line?

I was just watching Dick's Pyramid about an hour ago, with Terry Lester and Jackee on it. First time seeing it since it returned to GSN's lineup and I forgot how much I loved it. Good stuff.

My ideal set-up for a game show/soap opera compromise in daytime is for games in the morning and soaps in the afternoon, but with the limited network time, they'd have to figure out a way to put it all in the afternoon. Soaps have to go back to 30 minutes. It's a must. A must! There's a reason why so many, including Agnes and Bill, resisted the expansion! Irna sure as hell wouldn't have went for it.

Ook, sorry bell...i forgot every here knows nothing except a certain few. My bad for making a common sense comparison.

Business is business no matter who it is and it all comes down to one thing...MONEY.

So ya, you can compare the two.

Whaa.....it's not about "a certain few" or about people who "know nothing." It's about how Lifetime has never expressed an interest in ever picking up GL in the first place, and how someone decided to suggest that maybe GL should go to Lifetime, and how Lifetime is now plainly stating that they are not going to pick up GL. What could they possibly stand to gain by saying that they aren't picking up GL if they are going to pick up GL?

    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
    • I tend to think that Chad will actually listen to Jen (this time). And that will be the next stumbling block in their relationship, which will open the possibilities for Cat to seek another member of their love triangle... To iterate my earlier thought, I am also not a fan of the person Melissa Reeves, but the character of Jennifer looks so chic this week, especially in comparison to Hope (and Gabi).  That blunt haircut is a winner.
    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. Their connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters. All this talk of Jennifer being in the wrong regarding Cat is absurd. Jennifer is not being villainized in any way, shape, or form, she's just being allowed to actually be human, which adds odds to the obstacle of Chad and Cat eventually getting together. All inner conflict. Keep it coming!
    • Hahaha. Jean Hackney, Angelica Nero, and the Falcon Crest henchwomen were all straight out of a James Bond movie.
