THE DAYTIME INDUSTRY — Soaps are their own worst enemy!

After watching the deeply moving and entertaining Golden Globe Awards — my favourite awards show to cover — I realized why the Daytime Emmy Awards are still looking for a network to air the telecast in 2009. Are falling ratings to blame? Hell, to the no — it’s the industry’s fault, plain and simple. Each year, this counterproductive and frustrating industry chooses politics over justice. Which is why the ratings have decreased over the years. Why would anyone want to tune in to an awards show if justice can’t be served, especially when deserving nominees aren’t even on the menu? Say what you want about the Oscars or GGs — but at the end of the day, 90 per cent of the nominees and winners makes sense and are recognized — which adds an emotional heart, suspense, and a human face to the telecast. Can you imagine if Mickey Rourke starred on a soap? Rourke’s pissed a lot of people off, yet his community honoured him despite personal backstage politics. If Rourke starred on Y&R or OLTL, he’d be an outcast. Also, wouldn’t you rather there be pre-nominated actors who could actually earn a final nod in the end? Do you really think Amelia Heinle and Michael Easton will be nominated when all is said and done? Yes, Braeden and St. John aren’t the most loved stars on their shows (most talented artists are difficult; it’s a fact, so deal with it, people; but they are revered by the industry). Why would anyone want to tune into the Emmys to see Heinle honoured instead of the best actors in the business this past year? The film industry may be selfish snobs, but they are smart enough to know bad karma will bite them in the ass when it comes to their time to be recognized. The soap industry should be ashamed of themselves. I certainly am.

Bravo Nelson, bravo!!!

Well, he had me until he described the Golden Globes as "deeply moving" and "entertaining".

The biggest problem with the Emmys and the Daytime Emmys especially is the fact that the people who are voting the winners don't get to see most of the people they are voting on. The use of Blue Ribbon Panels was supposed to solve that problem but even with that it is too limited and just gives way to block voting.

With the Oscars the Academy gets the chance to see the movies - plus the movies do the campaigns and send out the tapes to the whole academy so they get to see the nominees then.

With the Golden Globes they are decided by the Foreign Press who take the time to see all the movies and shows they nominate.

for the Emmys esp. the Daytime Emmys to ever get over the poltics they have got to adapt a system that allows for more people to vote and more people to see the work of the people they are voting for.

I was just going to make a post about EM as Brady. With this John/Marlena storyline he really does have me believing he's John's son. And while I may be in the minority of people who liked KL, Eric is doing a damn good job. I don't even see Ethan when watching him, but I never accepted Eric as Ethan so that's probably why..

Yeah, the Oscars aren't political at ALL. That's how Shakespeare in Love won over Saving Private Ryan.

Word. I stopped watching awards shows for the awards years ago. I don't watch the Oscars at all, for the most part, and I don't watch the Globes at all. I watch both Emmys, but I really don't care about the primetime awards. I watch the Daytime Emmys because I like the idea of celebrating the industry and feeling good about it for at least once a year.

Sex and the City ruined soaps. After watching love, relationships and sexual liberty explored with such honesty and realism,

Bullshit.

While I’m thrilled my little Luke finally had his cherry popped, it would have been nice if ATWT aired a moment of true intimacy between Nuke, instead of having the couple’s momentous first sexual encounter happen offscreen.

I'd be thrilled to know why Luke and Noah are even in a relationship together.
