MLK Day, President's Day, winter weather & storms, Mid-Winter & Spring Break, and March Sweeps could raise the already rising soap ratings during the three months.

The ratings will be interesting for the week of both January 5-9, 2009 and January 12-16, 2009 because weather is getting pretty bad in most of the country meaning some asses will be at home during the day. Also meaning ratings will be going up for all soaps. I think during one of the two weeks you're going to see Y&R push over 4.0 for the first time since February. B&B is getting back on track to so a 2.9 or 3.0 is possible. For ATWT and GL their ratings will go up a point each. GL is very close to reaching a 1.8 one of these days, I believe with Edmund and Phillip returning we should see a rise in their ratings in February. People can't wait for Phillip to return so a 1.8 is definitely approachable.

ABC's AMC should be able to reach a 2.3 for the first time in months, OLTL a 2.4, and GH a 2.4, but a 2.5 probably won't come until the next sweeps period in March.

The soap that has the biggest chance to rise is DAYS, call me crazy, but this show is on its way to a 2.6 before we hit April. Between DAYS and Y&R these two shows have turned it around after a bad 2007 and 2008 for both shows. This year looks bright for both shows. If DAYS can stabilize between 2.2 and 2.4 the next two weeks then we can see this show steadily rising as some of the storylines are about to breakout big time. NBC made the right decision in keeping it around and I feel like those viewers that heard about the show's future are now feeling like its safe to watch it again.

With sweeps being in March this year, the soaps will have a three month window to reach heights that have propelled the genre to faster declines in the last three years. Late March also means Spring Break so for the first time the kids will be able to see watchable storylines during Spring Break.

For those of you looking for my soap ratings analysis column, they will be coming back either for next week's ratings or the week's after for sure. I thought it would be appropriate to give you guys a little forecast on what you can expect from the soap ratings these next three months. Sorry about not having them the last couple of weeks.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe for a minute that Any of the ABC soaps will reach the 2.3/2.4/2.5 range except for maybe GH. No way will AMC or OLTL reach that range. AMC is more balanced but the current stories are horrid. The Rylee crap is enough to make anyone turn off their tv. Kendall waking up is big news, but not enough to raise the roof on the ratings considering how Josh is being killed off. I see AMC staying put in the 2.0/2.1 range during March sweeps.

I can see OLTL reaching the 2.2 range. I like the current drug storyline, and I like that Matthew is finally being used.

There is no way that OLTL will ever hit a 2.4. The show would be lucky to hit a 2.1 and keep the rating (maybe alternating between a 2.1 and 2.2) And even that is near impossible. And I am huge OLTL fan right now. I really feel ABC has lost their core audiences and it is all about grabbing new viewers to get any ratings spikes..

The longest sustained growth OLTL showed was during November sweeps- It was a 2.2, 2.1, 2.1, 2.1 I think... and then they started dropping into the 2.0 and I am sure 1.9 is just around the corner.

I think AMC and OLTL will be lucky to get 2.1 and GH a 2.3.

And I don't even see that happening.

To me, Days is the show to watch ratingswise. I think this huge buildup lately leading to Drake and Deidre's leaving is pretty cool to see (And I loathe Dena and have no desire to watch Days- its not my thing) But I think they are going to continue getting a 2.2 and 2.3- And I cannot wait to see the ratings after those two vets leave. If Dena was smart she would be writing a MUST SEE show that viewers are going to want to stick around and watch after those two icons leave. I think Days has a large group of viewers who will come back. ABC does not have this.

I totally see Days as the new #3 show and getting excellent demos. Not AMC, OLTL, or GH.

As far as Y&R- The show will be lucky to hit a consistent 4.0 but I think it can be done. I would love to see Y&R at a 4.1 or something....

I really don't get how these ratings could be acceptable to ABC- their precious jewel GH (which lost its luster years ago) at a 2.1??

OLTL 2nd to last in viewership, DVR, 18-34, and barely reaching the top half anymore for 18-49..

and AMC in roughly the same area.

I went off on a tangent. Only two shows in my eyes that are going to show any growth are Days (possibly ALOT) and Y&R (not alot but some)

The rest other than B&B? I think its going to be a slow descent into cancellation.

The ABC shows got good demographics (OLTL best in 2 months, AMC best since Feb/May), but unless the total viewer average is wrong (typo) they went down in total viewers.

I don't understand the hype about Days rising and rising to a permanent #3. I really believe the inflated numbers for Christmas & New Year's Week were because the kids were home from school, and that's the one show they migrate to. Dee & Drake leaving might give them a momentary bounce, but I see them staying in the same 1.9-2.1 range as AMC, ATWT & OLTL when all is said and done.

I agree with you, LoyaltoAMC. But those who chart the numbers closely disagree. They have a decent foundation for their argument, but my gut's telling me there's nothing substantial about the gain. We'll see. I'm awfully curious to see where that show winds up in a couple of months.

Thrilled for Y&R. How amazing would it be to see a show get a 2.0 again in the demo that counts the most? Now THAT would be something to hold on to.

You think? I would guess it lost .1 ratings point. What was its 18-49 last week?

It will probably be at a 2.1 or 2.2..

I am very anxious to see Y&R's- My guess is a 3.9 with at least 2- 4.0 or 4.1 days!

And if Y&R can get a 3.9 or 4.0 during a relatively blah week- anything is possible (Even with weather/holidays/whatever)

Maybe a consistent 4.1 or 4.2 beginning by March sweeps.

    • There's some irony in Philip being forgiven, because it forces everyone to admit that Victor was wrong to change his will.  Everyone, eventually including Xander, (I presume), seems to think it was wrong for Victor to divide his estate in Xander's favor.  I appreciated Stephanie forgiving Philip, because she's got no skin in that game.  But, Belle's line about Philip missing Xander because he misses Bo did not ring true.  I think Philip would be sad if Bo dies, but I think he's more concerned currently about Xander. I am enjoying this EJ mystery so much that I am hereby taking a vow not to read spoilers.  I am also vowing — for the last time — to stop harping on this, but: the concept of a “sepsis treatment” remains absurd. Hospitals prevent sepsis through vigilant infection control; once sepsis sets in, it causes multiple organ failures. Treatment involves supporting each failing organ individually. The notion that a single medication could magically reverse organ failure is medically laughable. However, I like the contrast of Kim going through cancer, which is incurable in their universe.  Kayla's comment on the health of both of her siblings was both heartbreaking and an interesting twist.  MBE is also totally underrated.  She is carrying the weight of so many stories.   And, I like the use of Kayla as an audience surrogate.  She's arguably the most "real" person in Salem. Kayla isn't psychic, she wasn't SORASed, she's not a billionaire, and she doesn't have a bionic eye.  So, I enjoy that we get her perspective of the nuttiness that surrounds her.
    • But why worry about something that might not happen? Right now, most things revolve around the Duprees. We have no idea if or how long that will continue. For now, it's working.
    • The Duprees not having any staff is a bugbear for me. They've included the background staff at the Country Club but no one at the Dupree home. Even just an extra bringing in a tray of food/drinks or responding to a request from Anita would suffice.
    • Shut up, Dante and Lois.  I actually don't mind this particular soap trope, but in the context of this storyline, it just feels forced and unnecessary. If anything, this Dante/Gio tension needed to begin months ago. Plus, this storyline, in general, isn't doing Lois any favors either.  Emma comforting Gio was really sweet though. It's definitely time for the two of them to have their first kiss. And, Joss playing Secret Agent Barbie will just never work.
    • Note to makeup - Smitty’s eyebrows, bad clamshell look.

    • Okay I can buy that when Brook Lynn was a teen.  Now she knows the child is a boy one would think she'd be slightly suspicious.  Then again, Gio looks nothing like either of them so maybe not lol.
    • I've been behind & just got caught up & the last 3 days were amazing!
    • Yeah.  The hot, poor bad boy with a chip on his shoulder but with a heart of gold was a common soap trope in the 80s

    • That's been an issue with me... the lack of a cohesive 'Have Not' crowd that has focus other than Leslie/Eva.   I would beef up Jan, Mona, Laura, Joey, and few other male characters.. and not just be out to overthrow the Duprees.. but co-existing and broadening the scope of the show since the show is called Beyond the Gates. I think the set up the show has with everything revolving around the Duprees will become predictable especially if they always win.   It would be like Victor Newman on Y & R for 40+ years.. always winning, hardly ever losing.   With MVJ/Guza.. both trained under that mindset... I fear that will happen.   I've always heard from a performer that is playing a character like Leslie/Dana that you have to find the victim/hurt beneath the surface in order to play a villain/villainess... and I think that's why I enjoy watching her.. because she brings so much more to the part than what the writers put on the page.
    • I figure that was really hard for Dom to do. I completely GET why they wrote it the way they did but I wonder if it was necessary. Meanwhile I have 2 really icky ideas in my head. Drew is going to blame Tracy KNOWING it was not her. Dante is going to blame Lulu.  After that, everyone else is going to be mad at Lois.  Tracy is going to double down on wanting to get rid of Sonny. Sonny's going to be more dug in to stay because he now has a new descendant.
