Members dm.
Too bad for Salmons. What exactly was MAB looking for that Salmons couldn't deliver? Meh, I won't go into it...
Administrator Toups Posted March 3, 2009 Author Administrator Share Posted March 3, 2009 DAYS: - Jodie Scholz last listed as Script Writer on February 27 Go into it. What are your thoughts?
Members daysfan
Honestly, with Maria, I think she is still so new to the HW chair(despite being there for well over a year now), and with the backstage conflict with Josh Griffith and upheavels with Rauch and Sheffer coming in, she is still testing alot of writers out, and trying to find what feels right to her. She is one woman who barely touched the genre despite a several year tenure as a script writer or editor at B&B, she's not some veteran breakdown writer like Ron Carlivati or Dena Higley was, so again she may not be sure who or what she wants just yet, so she's bringing in old Y&R writers(I believe she's brought back a few old ones?), and also new ones. And thats alright IMO. Though in the cases of Casiello and Cohen, I think that was alllll Hogan.
Members aMLCproduction
I don't get why M. Bell has so many writers or why the writing revolving door is so active. Toups, wasn't Scott Hamner listed before Hogan for a while, nows it's switched recently, what does that mean and why did that happen?
Members Y&RWorldTurner
No, Sheffer has always been listed above Hamner. You obviously haven't been looking at Toups' archive.
Members aMLCproduction
I have been Y&RWORLDTURNER! And I swear Hogan was listed third. I am going by what I saw on my tv. I just swear his name was third
Members Y&RWorldTurner
His name was never third, his name was always above Hamner's. Perhaps you were confused.
Members Sylph
Wow... She fired Melissa... Is anyone else in total disbelief that we're still discussing the instability and total disparateness of this writing team? After all this time, it's still rocky? Why is she firing and hiring all the wrong people?
Members R Sinclair
Not only hiring but hiring and promoting after only writing 18 episodes.
Members Sylph
Right! I forgot about that! This is like a farce, a parody, a vaudeville... Hilarious. Terribly written but nonetheless amusing.
Members brimike
Here's what I don't get - the show is ON FIRE. If any other show had gone through this many writers in such a short amount of time, experience tells us we'd all be seeing it translate on-camera as a big ol' mess. But for the most part (and I emphasize "for the most part"... there are always people who don't like what's happening), the ratings and the fans seem to be happy with the show. Or at least feel like it's more coherent than a lot of other shows on the air. How is that possible with such a high turnover? It goes against everything we've seen happen at other soaps these last few decades. Not that I'm complaining. It's just so against-the-trend. Members MarkH
See, if only we could get MAB or HS or someone to EXPLAIN that to us. Logical analysis implies that up-front and post-hoc quality control has to be the issue. In other words, if you bring in (talented) newbies (new to the show) [and she has been hiring people with experience, so that is part of the equation...they know what they're doing, and many of them have some history with at least one of the higher ups], you give them CLEAR up front instructions and guidelines, you offer them mentors (e.g., senior writing staff and/or experienced writers) they can go to, and you have a high-quality post-draft editing process (and it seems Y&R has several editors)...that would explain the process. Experienced new writers, clear instructions, ongoing mentorship/consultation possibilities, and good editing. Oh yeah...and you don't write at the last minute, with only 24-48 hour turnaround! I have no idea if any of this is true, but it would seem to be (to my way of thinking) the preconditions for the kind of consistency you describe. Members Y&RWorldTurner
I don't know how much faith we can put into shows with relatively stable writing staffs anymore. As the ones with little hirings and firings are also in the crapper. But I guess nothing makes much sense these days.
Administrator Toups Posted March 5, 2009 Author Administrator Share Posted March 5, 2009 Exactly. If all these changes were affecting the show on screen, I'd be worried. But it's not. Also, it's not like the entire staff is unstable. All these writers have been there since the at least the summer (on air): Maria Arena Bell Hogan Sheffer Scott Hamner Marla Kanelos Natalie Minardi Slater Beth Milstein Paula Cwikly Jay Gibson Eric Freiwald & Linda Schreiber Sandra Weintraub Janice Ferri Esser Again, exactly. Look at GH - the most stable writing staff for almost a decade now. They have some of the best writers yet the show sucks because of the man at the top - Bob Guza. Members dm.
I am not worried one bit about Y&R because the quality of the show isn't ruined, IMO. But letting Salmons go was stupid; her scripts were great. But since she's out, she should go to OLTL, they're in need of a good scriptwriter, right?
