I worry about a coup d'état. I worry the midterms will be compromised.

I hope I am wrong.

But what do we do if they are?

What exactly are you afraid will happen? Think it through and spell it out. It's easy to be afraid of some nebulous thing you think might happen. It keeps you scared and frozen. Think about specifics of what you're afraid of and then you can prepare yourself for possibilities.

Personally, I'm not terribly worried about midterms because states run their elections. Trump doesn't have the power to do anything. Remember that EO he signed about getting rid of mail-in voting? What effect did it have? None. Trump isn't Thanos. He's an evil idiot surrounded by other evil idiots. Also, Dems have been sweeping special elections and overperforming by double digits. People seem to ignore the fact that elections are happening right now.

I feel the same way. And even if we do end up having elections in 2028, I have serious doubts that they will be free and fair. I feel like it's practically inevitable that J.D. Vance is going to end up becoming our next president regardless of what happens to Trump in the next couple of years. And if a Democrat does somehow win, the Republicans are going to do everything in their power to overturn and rig the results to go their way and the Supreme Court is going to stand by and allow them.

And what's going to happen when the entire U.S. government wipes us all out? How do we even stand a chance against the military that is in lockstep with the government as well as the Supreme Court and the billionaire oligarchs controlling things behind the scenes.

Don't forget that evil feeds on our fears. Not saying it's not a normal reaction (not shaming anyone for experiencing fear)... but what @Khan said earlier is the only possible solution.

P.S  Just recently we reminded ourselves that when doing something together...(clicking that cancel subscription button) all of us...  successfully opposed censorship. That gave me... hope for the future. WE CAN DO THIS.

Who said the military is in lockstep? We don't really know what will happen there. REmember how many of our military are people from underserved communities. And honestly how many of these people would be willing to turn against their own people.  I'd say ICE is more likely to turn than the actual military.  But we'll see. There is a reason these people are wearing masks and it's not because they know what they are doing is legal.

I'm starting "107 days" finally tonight!

Mine arrived today. Was hand delivered by the owner of the independent bookstore that I ordered from. I am so glad I decided to order from a bookstore owned by a Black woman!

I appreciate your response and your questions. Mostly I am afraid that younger generations are unwilling to fight for democracy the way we did. It's unfair on my part but as a senior citizen with physical limitations I can't do it anymore. Neither can my contemporaries.

I wish I was as optimistic about the midterms as you are. I will try to be.

I feel encouraged by the responses on this thread. The wllingness to fight it.

... and by Kimmel's return

Moreso by Sinclair backing down, the fight works.

That's simply amazing. And it makes it so much more special.

The truth is a lot of the younger generations don’t believe in democracy any more.

Millennials and Gen-Z are in for a world of hurt and they are in no way prepared for it. They’ve lost so much and don’t realize it yet. They’ve lost Roe, affirmative action, and the Chevron doctrine and that’s before you get to the long-term economic damage done to the country by the GOP.

I finished 107 days. WOW. I didn't expect to feel so much emotions and to even cry, but I did. I recommend everyone to read it when you have the chance. Very inspiring. I still am processing it and will write something lengthy soon.

Thank you for informing me, and perhaps the rest of us, of the Chevron doctrine.  I looked it up.

The roots are deep.

I would have thought losing Roe would have had more impact. Or we aren't being informed of the impact.

I have American citizenship but also Canadian and I live in Quebec. We have had our own share of political turmoil that has occupied my attention over the years, decades. Quiet now.

Please feel free to correct and inform me.  You know your stuff.

Thanks
