B&B: Week of October 06, 2008

I don’t expect the B&B “momentum” (sad at how little I’m to please...) to keep going especially as I’ve heard of Katie’s miscarriage. Will be interesting seeing Heather Tom losing another baby on TV but I don’t expect it to be nearly as heartbreaking as when she lost a child as Y&R’s Victoria back in 1998...

Lol. Realistic expectations. ;)

Word.

Although the writers have not run out of ideas, it's more the execution which puts new meaning to p i s s-p o o r writing. <_< The pacing is ludicrous even in stories/involving characters which you don't despise to the fullest. Seriously, if B&B weren't my #1 baby I would have kicked it into the curb this Summer. Everything which I consider an utmost failure (stupid plotpoints, no pacing, no feeling, cheap dialogue) drove me away from GH some years ago. It's like a deja-vu of seeing a trainwreck.

Alike of GH, the potential is there (needless to say that Guza/Phelps/Frons managed to trash it a lot further down the road...) which makes it even more frustrating. A show can be just plain bad (like when LML headed Y&R solely with family and house personnel) so that you can bid it a teery farewell but being drawn into still watching utter crap gaining some hope and still being disappointed is hard...

That said, I'm currently watching mid-September episodes which, dare I say, are shockingly good. It's not that they are re-inventing the wheel but it's just not too bad since Eric awoke from his coma. Lots of family interaction *gasp* Eric has other children than bastard son Ridge or doctor Bridget – OMG *gasp*, even Beth made a visit to Eric. *gasp* use of history, three months late but still *gasp* Stephanie and Brooke sparing over Eric and Donna... Basically everything that doesn’t involve Nick & Katie is bearable. The baby Jack stuff is unoriginal but so far done ok and I accept it as logical consequence of Taylor’s insecurity out of raising Rosemary’s ahem Brooke’s baby. Most importantly though the stories are now linked and characters are having actual dialogue discussing feelings/impact and such drivel. A-mazing.

LMAO at Thorne playing watch-dog with the walkie-talkie to prevent intruders like Donna to enter the holy Forrester premises. Since B&B is written much further in advance it’s fair to say that Y&R bought this idea from B&B now that Victor is having the Newman Ranch patrolled in the same manner in those episodes I’m currently watching...

I've noticed that they have connected the stories more lately, but still ... I wonder if I'm just bored of these characters myself.

I know it's off topic, but I have to ask. Is Y&R worth watching these? How's Sheffer's writing? Outside of a few peeks here and there, I haven't watched the show since Dru was shoved off that cliff and the show and I probably won't start watching again unless Ms. Rowell comes back ... unless it's really, really good.

Pass the Pam please! She's the reason why I'm liking the show. B&B used to have camp during the 90's and thankfully she's brought it. The woman's so crazy and Donna's such a wimp. What an amazing combo!

[KatherineChancellor]Dear God in Heaven, why has this show turned into such unbelievable crap? Why?[/KatherineChancellor]

LOL at Brooke telling Taylor she doesn't have the best marriage record! Huge missed opportunity for Taylor to let Brooke have it.

And why in the world was Donna making threats to crazy Pammy when she has a gun.

And Steffy continued to look very Taylor Jr today, especially when they're in back-to-back scenes.

Did you see Jack Wagner's take on all of this. He is agreement with us, albeit more forgiving. These are just B&B snippets, but the full interview has nice nuggets on Melrose Place, Heather Locklear....

On Nick as "seedman"

It’s a little weird! It’s been a very unusual year for Nick to be in love with Taylor. But, as far as I’m concerned it’s “B&B”… “Blondes and Brunettes,” not, “Bold and Beautiful.” (He laughs) It was really good to go through that whole egg storyline and whose baby it was. I thought the way they did that with the two rivals of Taylor and Brooke, was a good soap storyline. Then it branched into maybe its Brooke’s. And when you introduce a new character, like with the Katie character, it can get a bit tricky. You can’t revisit Taylor and Brooke right away. I think Nick’s character was sacrificed this year, I really do. Nick has always been a stand up guy… trying to do the right thing and being a man of his word. This year I named him the ‘seed man’. He just drops his seed in any woman he sees, and what happens, happens! Its kind of what this year’s been like, and to play that has been difficult.

You have to act as is if you are doing a play a day, and then we wrap and do another one. It’s gotten a little confusing, and the character has been scarified a bit to move storylines. But that’s OK. That’s part of this medium. We do a lot of work, and quick, and sometimes when you introduce a new character you have to sacrifice some other characters. It had not happened at all in five years here. But, to go through a year where there is a little confusion and in what direction Nick is going, is OK. I can deal with that.

On the retcon "beach sex" with Katie:

What happened was that it never happened. We were three weeks past that, and Katie was going to be pregnant. They had made love on the beach, and as the actors we were like, “Oh.” So we have been playing three weeks like there was no subtext. So we had to go back and re-shoot those lovemaking scenes. They added them in. That’s because we were playing this underlying sexual tension. But, that was all kind of a late addition to the storyline, which is what made it confusing. That’s why I think the audience was thinking, “Where is Nick’s core here? Where is his heart? Where has it gone?”

He sleeps with Katie. Nick gets wrapped up in the moment. It’s her dying moment. She wants to die. She does not want to take her pills anymore. Nick has basically been hired by Brooke and Bridget to go and take Katie out on the Marlin. They want to give her last dying wish, which is to feel happy. No one makes her happier than Nick. The Logan sisters say, “You make her laugh. When you come into her hospital room she lights up, so please do this for our family.” Nick is with her and she is dying, and smash-cut, they start making out and….what can you say … it happens! (He laughs)

On Nick and his momma, as well as actress Leslie-Anne Down

There has not been much, because if any real mother watched what went on, she would be taking Valium and Xanax throughout the day! I think she is going to wait in the wings to find out what real direction Nick is going and then play the matriarch. She has been out of the loop because Nick has been so busy being the ‘seed man’. The ‘seed man’ has very busy days. He does not work or make money anymore. I think Nick now plays the stock market from the cell phone of his car. He was a seaman, and then an entrepreneur, and ran a fashion company, and was able to sell that. Now he apparently is able to live off of his million! (He laughs)

There are a handful of days. The majority probably has been with Lesley-Anne Down, as Nick’s mother. I, like most men, are connected to that mommy or mother syndrome. Lesley is so above and beyond anyone I have worked with in terms of being able to capture things that are unexpected. It usually taps into something, or some emotion with me, as Jack and as a man. I am usually able to play that as Nick, because, lets face it, it’s not like we are doing Arthur Miller here. It’s not like we have a long time to rehearse a play; we need to do this in a half hour. So, the key to acting in daytime is to basically know your lines in a short amount of time and be available. With Lesley, it’s not that romantic thing I play with Katherine Kelly Lang, or Ashley, or Heather, or Hunter. This is a mother. Everyman that I know, who I have ever talked therapeutically to or anything, there is always some sort of mother syndrome. So, most that are memorable for me are with Lesley-Ann Down.

On desired future direction:

Something a little more substantial in terms of his power. I think they really exercised that in terms of his shipping company, and trying to have him in the fashion business was a nice attempt. But, this show is grounded in families and relationships. It’s about that core family. For Nick to have a son and Brooke be the mother, that is a pretty good foundation, and where that goes to in terms of power. When you branch off into professional parts of his life, like taking over Forrester Creations, I don’t know how many legs that really has. (Unless, it was like Spectra, where it was a competing fashion house). “B&B” is such a relationship-driven show, that you kind of have to really stick with what works on the show, and what makes these people laugh and cry.

On working with Katherine Kelly Lang

It is a treat everyday, because I get to laugh and be stupid.

On working with Heather Tom

I find Heather very interesting. She is able to do comedy, and obviously, she can do drama! She is always crying, and I say to her, “What are you crying about?” And she says, “I don’t know.” So, she is always crying. She cries during make-up, and cries during rehearsal, and I say, “You know, we are not suppose to cry here.” She goes, “I know I am winning my Emmy or something.” I am just kidding!

Not only challenging…but very rewarding. She is one of the best actresses I have ever worked with.

On working with Ashley Jones

Ashley Jones is not only about having a great friend, but someone who is beautiful and talented. I get the best of the best everyday.

VERY interesting quotes on working with Hunter Tylo. I don't even know what this means. It sounds like she goes off script and just improvises whatever the heck she wants??

I found Hunter to be so interesting. With her process, you don’t know if she is with you or not. She rehearses different. Hunter has a whole different line set up; it’s never really the script. But boy, I tell you, when they say action, it’s there. It’s really kind of cool. I think to myself, “I just want to know, when you are going to stop talking, because I really don’t know.” I love that, but we are in such time restraints. I found working with Hunter challenging in a good way, not in a negative way. She just works differently than all the other girls on the show.

Interesting. IMO, she doesn't do a bad job if she really does improvise a lot. Her dialogue isn't below anyone elses.

What's also interesting is that JW used to rave that one of the main reasons he took the job on B&B was the interaction he had with Brad Bell on how Nick's story progressed. He felt like he could bring feedback on the story back to Brad and see that reflect in the scripts. It sounds like HT is just bringing the same kind of personal take, just in a different way. Maybe that's why he says it's not really a bad thing, just different. It's not the what he's used to, but he feels like it works.

JW is emotionally checked out. Other sources say he comes in, shoots his stuff, and takes right off. No socializing, no hanging out. I'm sure that is why his dressing room is so stark.

I guess between his boys and his troubled girlfriend, he has enough on his plate. He sure looks tired. So, maybe like the Eileen Davidson of a few years ago, he's really not CARING about the the show or his role right now...and he is letting Brad write whatever he wants. Which makes me wish he would return to the involved, co-creating actor he once was. Because Seedman's character REALLY needs help!!!!!

Well his story isn't something that his peers have anything to do with. If anything, I think it would be better to band together and say that the show sucks, instead of looking like you're the only one.

One could get whiplash with the way this show constantly changes partners. So now Taylor is back in love with Ridge? This came out of nowhere. Im guessing Ridge and Taylor will hook up which will send Brooke back in Nick's arms so that Katie can become jealous of them and their son. How predictable. And so much for her truce with Brooke which lasted like 2 days.

I hate that they've turned Pam into Sheila. She was fun at first but they've gone overboard with her

In Eileen's case, she stopped caring because she felt the writers had lost touch with Ashley as Bill Bell wrote her. That's why she was glad that Brad Bell brought back the Ashley his dad wrote when she came to B&B. So after several years of Alden and Smith not getting it, she stopped caring, and it probably became worse under LML if the rumors that she let Eileen go because she just didn't "get" Ashley were true. In JW's case, though, he always thought Brad "got" Nick until Nick became the seed-man. I wonder if there was something - like his voicing his opinion to Brad about seed-man and not seeing resullts, or possibly Kay Alden's presence as co-HW - that has JW deciding that he doesn't have the same connection and thus is just going along with the scripts?
