I'm up to "The Confession." The intercutting between two parallel conversations gimmick has officially crossed the line from clever to annoying.

Joan was missing from the latest podcast with Tonya Crowe due to a back injury. I hope she's okay and back soon. I was hoping to hear more about the Olivia/Val relationship but unfortunately, we didn't get that. I also watched the Kim Lankford interview which might've been my favorite so far. Much like Michelle Phillips, she was very honest about how disappointed she was in how James Houghton discarded her.

She talked about how they were offered a spin-off and Houghton turned it down which led to their exit. She wishes she had a heads up about it so she could've gone to David Jacobs and tried to negotiate something for herself. Despite being upset about this, she was very positive about how things turned out overall. She seems to be living her best life now which is great. She also looks amazing!

On the one hand, it sounds as if James Houghton was given heads-up about the potential Kenny/Ginger spinoff before Kim Lankford, which I think was very unfair of the producers to do. (Sort of smacks of Joyce DeWitt and the rest of the "Three's Company" cast finding out about "Three's a Crowd" almost after the fact). But, on the other hand, I'm not sure how successful Lankford would've been on her own, either on a spinoff or on KL. As it was, the producers really struggled to give the Wards decent storylines after the first season or so.

The show really missed the boat by never having Abby have a fling with Kenny. Would’ve made more sense that Abby sleeping with Richard lol.

You know there is a 3rd possible theory here in regards to Houghton/Lankford... the producers lied to Lankford. It wouldn't be the first time that producers would turn stars against one another so they couldn't band together.

Odd she decides to wait until after he's dead to slander him when he isn't around to tell his side. Me thinks she's lying a little bit.

Well, just about anything would've made more sense than Richard and Abby sleeping together, lol. But I'm not sure what, if anything, could've been gained from an Abby/Kenny fling either. Sure, Ginger would've been pissed, and either she would've moved out, or thrown him out. But then what? And would anyone really care?

On the other hand, if Abby had made a play for Ben..... ;)

I can't see a spinoff ever working and I'm surprised they even almost had a spinoff. I would have kept Ginger on the show on her own for a season though, to see where they might have taken her.

Actually, @DRW50 , I think having Kenny and Ginger depart was a smart move. KNOTS had already changed so much, IMO, and neither Ward fit into what the show was becoming. (Same goes for Richard/John Pleshette, although I still hold onto my fanfic of having him return in S14 to defend Mack on murder charges and hook up with Anne as if my very life depended upon it, lol).

I can see your point, I just think even with the changes in the show there was still a window for Ginger to explore herself (I don't mean it that way, sorry), as we were seeing Laura and Valene rebuild their shattered lives around the same time. Maybe just a season, but I don't think it would have been as much of an issue as some of the other characters who ended up staying too long (Olivia, Cathy [that character probably never should have existed], Claudia, etc.).

A Kenny and Ginger spinoff? Can I turn the gun on myself?

No, Drew, you cannot!

IIRC, Ginger was a preschool or kindergarten teacher, which is a creative dead end, as far as professions on soaps go; and even though they tried hard in S4 to sell us on the notion that, in fact, she was always harboring dreams of being a pop/rock singer (no doubt, inspired by Lankford's real-life romance at the time with Warren Zevon), I don't think there was much you could explore in that arena either. (Even Lisa Hartman, who was way more talented than Lankford, ended up not doing much the second time around besides sing covers and cry over Gary/Ray/Joshua/Ben). So, I'm really at a loss as to how Ginger could've evolved with or without Kenny beyond S4.

I mean, they COULD have turned Ginger into a full-blown psycho in the same mold as Kimberly Shaw or Sydney Andrews, but I think most MELROSE PLACE fans would agree that that's not sustainable in the long run, lol.

Generally that's true but I think Kimberly and Sydney had evolved enough to be functional. It was the budget cuts and skewed priorities at Melrose post-S4 that did Cross and Leighton in.

True.

The problem was that any story possibility I could come up with Ginger would have fit much better with Val and I think the show agreed.

In terms of the other women, season 3 was Karen's widow era, season 4 was Val's divorcing era, and season 5 was Laura's divorcing/rebuild era. So having Ginger going through a divorcing/rebuild era in season 5 would have been over-shadowed by Laura's journey.

As @Khan mentioned earlier.. Ginger being a grade school teacher and later singer kind of limited her and what the show could do with her. In Season 1 through 4, she could function within the confines of the show structure.. but season 5 was when the show expanded officially beyond the Seaview Circle era and the big stories that season were Val's pregnancy starting up, Wolfbridge, and the Chip story. There wasn't any way to fit Ginger into those main plotlines based on her profession/function on the show while Laura being in real estate made her a natural fit into the Wolfbridge story.

And let's face it, even in season 1 through 4... there were episodes where Kenny/Ginger were absent and/or came in at the very end of the episode to ask what was going on while the main player of the episode provided a recap.

A spin-off with Kenny/Ginger could have worked if the premise was interesting and there were a collection of interesting characters. I mean Gary/Val were barely seen/featured on Dallas and they led a successful spin-off.. so I could have seen a spin off involving the music scene working (and Nashville/country music scene could have been an interesting world to explore. Country music alone always features soapy over the top stories and tragic happenings).

The spin-off would've been Kenny and Ginger moving to Nashville and working in the music industry. I'm not sure it would've worked either, however, I am curious what Kim would've pitched David Jacobs had she been given the chance.

The missed opportunity for me is that the initial exit but the later years of the show. I don't think they could've found something substantial for Ginger to do in seasons 5 or 6 but I do think had she returned post-Abby, enough time would've passed where she could've been valuable again. Have a single Ginger move back with Erin Molly or even Ginger with a new husband. Richard is another character that I feel could've helped the show in those later years.
