Constance McCashin keeping it real by saying she was salary dumped. I wonder whom she was referring to when she said "our four salaries equaled one of the others".

The only ones I could see potentially raking it in are Michele Lee, Ted Schackelford, Joan Van Ark and Donna Mills. With that said, I don't think there was ever a Larry Hagman or Patrick Duffy on Knots where the pay disparity would be huge between them and other cast members, but I might be wrong.

Ted Shackelford, Joan Van Ark, Michele Lee were original cast members but I don't know how long their initial contracts were so there had to have been some salary renegotiation after the initial contracts were up. Donna Mills came on in season 2 so she would have been on a different contract cycle than the original cast and I'm pretty sure she also had a salary renegotiation after her initial contract was up.

1987 seems to be the year where the budget issues started across all three CBS primetime soaps and by Fall 1988 budget mode kicked in.

Going by what I know of Aaron Spelling shows, at least there it seemed like they typically put OG cast members on five season contracts and people who joined after that for two season contracts. Not sure how Lorimar handled it, but it wouldn't surprise me if Donna was signed to a shorter contract to start with and her character becoming popular might've given her a leverage in negotiations.

But again, no one on Knots really seemed to have the same power Larry Hagman had on Dallas.

Constance McCashin didn't seem upset with any of the cast members over the salary except she obviously did not like Ted Shackelford. Kim Lankford was obviously still upset with Jim Houghton over what happened, and she may not have said anything if he had not died recently.

It was a big missed opportunity not keeping Kim Langford.  Having a single Ginger in the cul de sac would have been very interesting. Can you image Karen’s reaction if Ginger and Eric had an affair?  I know difficult budget decisions had to be made but I would rather have seen reduced episode counts for the leads instead of losing Laura.

I kind of think that Richard leaving at the end of season 4 played a small part in Ginger being axed at the end of season 4.

I'm not sure if John P opted to quit at the end of season 4 or if it was a storyline dictated decision... but the show most likely would have struggled writing both Ginger and Laura as divorced women juggling kids with finding their place in the career world.

Much as how Ginger suffered with her occupying the same place as Val in the early seasons, she would have suffered even more as a character in season 5 being the same place as Laura.

As strong as the show was, it did seem to have a weak spot in terms of not being able to write diverse stories for their characters that were in the same station in life.

In regards to Kim Lankford's states about James H and his choosing to leave thus leading to her being fired.  I'm wondering if that was only told to her in order to shield themselves from blame.

I wonder this because he had stated once that he was 'forcibly ejected' from the show when he was asked about whether his leaving was his decision or not.   So he probably saw the writing on the wall, went to the show runners and basically was told that they had no place on the show going forward.. and then to save face, the showrunners told Kim that she was being cut because of James.

It wouldn't be the first time that bosses lie to employees and pit them against one another.

That's really what it comes down to. Cause true be told I was more interested in Laura and Ginger’s journey than the other 3.  Now, don't get me wrong, they all were amazing characters, but there's a trend that the most complex or human characters always get the shaft.

And you brought up a great point regarding TPTB lying and pitting their talent against one another. It definitely happens!

Yay!!

I think the pecking order was Sid and Karen - both Don and Michelle were well known and respected performers and getting them for a series was seen as an asset.

Then Gary and Val withe Dallas Connection.

Richard/ Laura and Kenny/ Ginger were on a par 4 pretty much unknowns.

But Richard/ Laura were more interesting characters played by dynamic actors and they fitted in better age wise with the others. Ginger/ Kenny were more outsiders and therefore dispensable.

Did Don Murray have a shorter contract than the others that allowed him to leave? Or was it a mutual thing that he was restless and the producers saw the advantages to Sid exiting?

    • KMH was annoying AF as Emily or as I call her "Emiloon" that screech crying yikes, so bad
    • spoiler alert AMC...   Ha..this is one of those storylines, much like the Salem Stalker...and whatever Alex was supposed to be holding over Alan's head that Henry knew about...what was the original intention of the through line..who is Mary Bauer and why does Meta know Zach (I know what Zach is supposed to be but was he human before...is Chele a reincarnation of Mary? )Eventually was he supposed to become human? Why is he so dull if he who is supposed to be...but it does make sense on why he is so sexless.  Of course, what the hell was the burial ground storyline of Qualo..it was like they were trying to reenact the 80s with that  temple storyline Marland gave them...would have been more interesting to have Stacy come back with "return from the dead" Silas Crocker in disguise as an older lover.  McTavish is at loose threads here and you can tell she just does not give a damn anymore.  A great idea is hidden in the whole Roger/Dinah/Hart mess....Roger having a midlife crisis and breakdown would have been good...being confronted with all of his misdeeds, the two rapes, and also his murders (the show always likes to forget that he pushed a woman down the stairs and had to have killed people in the CIA.) Maybe something he does accidentally causes Holly to miscarry, and then he does something again accidnetly to hurt Hart so he thinks he killed him.

    • OMG! Not Lily vs Phyllis with Amanda giving the sip tea look!  The Dru came out in Lily!!! lol.
    • I remember, for their wedding, TPTB pulled out the old Stewart patio which had not been seen for years (and was not seen again). But during the 1960s, Ellen and David's patio was seen somewhat often during the summer months.
    • OMG! Yes!! Best of the episode and double so after my rewatch. She got Anita ALL...THE...WAY...TOGETHER. I can't wait to get caught up and see Sharon.   Now you.  re: Samantha.   Same. I was so annoyed with Month 2 for stalling on Martin's Secret, but in hindsight...that was perfect because I got used to their characters and their lives so NOW I feel so much more invested when the Secret comes out. And how it's been done as a slow burn during May Sweeps with Bill toying with them keeps Bill in villain mode while giving organic conflict for Martin and Smitty due to what's been written for them building up to this month. Bonus...it's clear the actors are soooo much more comfortable with each other.    The one thing that I looove about Vernon is that while that is very much true what you said...when need be...he shows very brief moments of an edge. CHOOSE SILENCE...like BE STILL...lives rent free in my head. lol. I can't wait to use that on someone.  You wouldn't be alone in that. While not perfect...and haters are going to hate...if you get enjoyment even with flaws, why does anyone have an issue with Pollyanna? I see people are enjoying GH, and I have well documented reasons for liking and disliking it. And I don't at all hate on everyone who have been enjoying it and regularly watch it. It's like seeing a tweet you don't like on the Twitter. You see it, have no need to add to it, and keep scrolling.  Same. But tbf...is ANYONE screaming that now...or just naturally liking the show?  Same. But I am a sucker for bangs.
    • The last thing I want on a new soap -- or on any soap -- is an actor thinking she's a kid in a candy store. I know Cady has plenty of fans, but I'm just not fond at all of all these accents (and accent changes) and tics. The show should INSIST she settle on a consistent character for Pamela -- now. The idea that these established soap actors get to play around like it's a game is bizarre. I don't like what she's doing at all, and the fact that I can't tell you what she's doing makes it even worse.   The hour does fly by, and I do enjoy the show. I'm no longer on a high with the show and screaming "I love this show!" though. That's not a bad thing. We can't forget we're still in the first 6 months and every soap had to deal with first-year struggles and changes. I'm willing to give GATES time on all of it. In the meantime, though, I have to call out the stuff that isn't working. Yo're exactly right about the editing. Those "sudden drop offs to commercial"? I hate them. I think they're awful and poorly executed in all phases -- the timing, the music, the fade itself. I have no idea what they're doing. I've said this before: I think it's intentional. It's not just one director, and it's clearly a production choice. I think they want to be "the different soap." Sorry, this ain't the place to do that. They have not only ruined scene endings galore with these fades, but they have ruined cliffhangers. Ending a show with something dramatic followed by an "Oh, well" fade makes no sense to me.
    • I'll say this much...for the most part...soaps WERE giving this Sweeps...LOL. I'm looking at you, BTG, DAYS, and YES GH.

But knowing that, I really want to know...especially since I'm behind on at least two of those soaps lol due to work and faulty technology...how would you all grade May Sweeps this time?   A     B     C     D     F       To paraphrase Dani Dupree...the hottest level of Hades...?   How did you like Sweeps?
    • 5-26   My system went down, but thankfully is back up. It's a shame that if I missed something, I just don't care. So May Sleeps indeed. smh.    That said...I found this episode intriguing. Yeah, it had a LOT of the characters that I didn't care about. And I know @slick jones probably glared seeing his man around that girl,

but I will give credit where it's due.    It must be a sign there is about to FINALLY be story movement when we start to get artistic camera angles again...something that has been absent for a while. The overhead sweeping into the scene at the start of the episode? LOVE. Good to see Ed Scott is still around somewhere. And I loved what Phyllis had on and Amanda in the red. Claire continued to have her own style and Holden continued to look hot. And I continue to be in awe that the designer is trying her darnest to get Kyle from looking so stuffy but still keep him suited.    Everything Audra continued to intrigue. And I continue to feel that Kyle is totally going to fall into her trap because he is much too cocky. Holden is a great wild card, but I don't like him hinting that perhaps Audra actually have feelings for Kyle. THAT boat has sailed and would have been better used when Summer was around. Besides I love Audra with Nate.   Phyllis vs Sally will always be awesome. And they were both giving great lines.    I could care less for Billy.
