It's just superior writing and a lot better than the cartoonish women literally every other soap writer concocts that are so dynamic and attractive to men of all ages despite being old or whatever. This is a lot more compelling a character that HIV positive Robin Scorpio on GH who manages to land the handsomest, most brillliant and successful doctor on staff despite being not all that attractive and altitudinally challenged. Or Nurse Liz Webber, who despite being single with 400 kids in tow, manages to find man who after who loves her and think she is a real catch. And because he allowed this woman and Nola to be realistically flawed and imperfect, it makes the crime stories to come a lot more believable and interesting.

Thanks so much for the interview. It's great. What an incredible writer he is. Watching the episodes on Youtube I'm so impressed, over and over, by just how good they are on every level.

I wonder why they didn't just recast Timmy and keep him around in the background.

I think they were wrong about Lois Kibbee. I think she was on Edge first as Geraldine, then the story ended, Slesar put her on Somerset, and then after her Somerset story ended they brought Geraldine back.

Yes,Lois was on Edge before Somerset.Somewhere the wires got crossed.I agree re Timmy.Just have him away at school or camp then recast. It's not like that had never been done before.

With such a high turnover of characters,i wonder why they didn't make better use of history and bring back former characters or their children eg Judy Marceau,Cookie Pollack etc

They did that with Jody and Kelly.

I wonder why they wrote Laurie out for so long, although I guess the show didn't really suffer her absence.

Watching the mid-1979 episodes, I'm impressed by what a nice presence Mandel Kramer is. He's more than a competent actor, he doesn't seem in any way doddery or weak, as some of the older P&G vets did when they were phased out, he works very well with Steve and Calvin and Deborah, and he's a handsome enough man for his age. I know he probably had a fairly high salary compared to a lot of the others but I wish they'd kept him on in some capacity, perhaps as mayor or something.

It's always shocking to me how they got away with Raven's bad parenting, from leaving her baby alone for hours to go see a movie, to leaving the baby with a drunk sitter. I'm not sure if she was ever really "punished" for it either. In some of the 1979 episodes she's a little too dumb but by 1980 she's reaching her best - it's especially refreshing that she has these relationships with so many men at once.

I'm surprised they had Logan and April fall into a romance so quickly.

I guess this is when Jody was still supposed to be a bad girl.

In the Slesar article,it is stated that Slesar returned when the headwriter passed away.Lou Scofield was the writer at the time, but he didn't die until 72.Was it just an factual error,or are they referring to another writer?

Did Scofield leave Edge to create WTHI?

Also, regarding Edge writers, does anyone know why Irving Vendig left the show he created and wrote for almost a decade? He went on to create NBC's answer to Edge,Hidden Faces.

    • Haha, love to hear it, and thank you! Yeah, I just write down thoughts/notes as I'm watching in this viewing journal I'm keeping.  So, you get my raw, honest thoughts in the moment without me having to go back and remember or curate anything.

Watros is great, and I've liked her from the beginning, so I'm excited to see her evolve and shine even more as Annie continues to descend. I'll keep an eye out for that scene.  I have to say, Rick cracks me up, there are times when he makes jokes and you can tell the actor is having fun with it and cracking himself up. He's endearing. Let me suffer!    So funny how big Josh's hair is in the 80s. Sign of the times, I guess.   I can't wait to finally see the Sonni storyline and watch a younger Michelle Forbes shine. It's on my list, I will go back in time eventually and do this
    • This was late 1993, right before Roger is shot.
    • Haha I guess so, and in this recent case, Alan absolutely deserved it (many times over, honestly).
    • It's hard to remember, as Holly and Blake always seemed to be on the outs over something.
    • Ohhh yes, these were exciting!  What year was this?  Another added bonus, watching Tangie lurk around like a thief with that black beanie.

I'm happy to hear I'm not alone in my thoughts over Gilly's exit and Vivian's first and likely only contract storyline. It was just a shame. On one hand, I'm glad they decided to finally write for this family (as Gilly was sorely underused in 1995), but then on the other... that was what they decided? Sure, it was a bit soapy, but oh so gross. They could have come up with something better.
    • Women slapping guys is a little more common.  I grew up with CBS, so it doesn't seem strange to me. If you got a slap, you usually really deserved it.
    • That could be it too. I just remember a slap at some point. That would have been around when she was made at Holly for "ruining" her one-sided relationship with Alan Michael. I don't know if you will be getting to 2000 (if you do - buckle up!) but there's a character who was intended to be Stacy.
    • Agree with all of this. They use stuff like the redecoration and the party as major events and nothing comes of it. Kyle/Claire is of no interest to me because Kyle has already been deeply in love with Lola and summer so his devotion to Claire is more of the same. And Claire is a character that came from a nonsense rewrite and now is presented as Little Miss Innocent, her dark past swept away. That charm bracelet of Nikki's must weigh a ton. The list of grandchildren seemed endless. The thing is, most of them are offscreen and ignored. Victoria seems like a neglectful parent. Was Dylan mentioned? Another dumb rewrite character. Not only is the show hampered by so many vet charcters, TPTB don't seem interested in venturing into new areas with them. Cole was brought by but there hasn't been any dramatic story that could impact on Victoria? What had he been doing all those years? So many characters w/o stories talking about businesses we never see.
    • I thought it was Sherry Stringfield, but maybe it was before Blake slept with Ross.
    • Thank you for the great background and summary - very helpful!  Yes, very odd they never brought her back, but at least J mentioned her, so not truly forgotten. Ah interesting, I guess I never realized that CBS was a bit more conservative/old-fashioned in a way, at least pre-2000 or so. It's funny, I wrote that about slapping, and then a few episodes later, Vivian storms into the Spaulding mansion and slaps Alan. It's like I spoke it into existence.
