Compared to last year.....the ABC soaps have lost over 1.2 million viewers. AMC, GH, and OLTL are the top 3 in the most total viewers lost from last year.

1. GH 2,834,000 (-124,000/-470,000)

2.OLTL 2,759,000 (+102,000/-441,000

3. AMC 2,667,000 (+100,000/-434,000)

Hey I'm not defending the guy at all I'm just trying to understand if there is some method behind the madness because I don't think for a second he's stupid. ABC's demos are pretty much right behind Y&R right or maybe 3rd and I keep hearing that's all they care about at ABC.

My opinion in terms of his pets being front and center. He keeps a set of maybe 5 or 6 core characters on each show and everyone else becomes expendable. He rotates in cheap newbies in and out every year. You have Sonny, Carly, Jason and the Z's at GH now. On AMC Rylee and Zendall. OLTL is exempt from this for the time being.

And on a side note, I'm done with the stunt casting. I tuned into AMC for a few weeks to watch Angie and Jessie and now their back on backburner for the most part and I won't be tuning in to GH to watch GH again waste the most wonderful Genie Francis.

just remember, networks do not care about overall viewers. everyone loves to cite those ratings around here, but networks do not care. the only rating they care about is "the demo"... the 18-49 (and even more so 18-34)

hate to break it to you... if you're over 50, networks don't care about you. not for daytime or primetime. you're not the advertisers demo.

that said, all of them are losing viewers in the demo as well.

That being said even the coveted demos have dropped. I just wonder though. Doesn't Days still do decent in the 18-34 demo yet is lower in the ratings? If all they care about is demos, why is Days on the chopping block.

OLTL is #1 I think. If that's the group they want to attrack, I would think that should tell ABCD something.

I think all ABC Soaps demos are down proportionately to ratings and viewers. I think GH was 1.3 in 18-34 last year and are now 1.0 and I think they were 1.7 or 1.8 in 18-49 last year and are now 1.4. Maybe those are still decent demo numbers considering that overall TV viewership is down.

This is why long-lived soaps really HAVE to end.

Weeks ago, marceline talked about "nostalgia" ruining daytime.

The thing is this: If you have a show that has been around 70 or 35 years, some of the viewers are going to age with it.

EVEN if you are successful in recruiting new viewers, you're going to drag some of the older ones along too. That mixed audience is anathema to advertisers, who increasingly want niche markets. The reason ESPN is heralded as Disney's supreme success story is because it VERY effectively brings young men. So targeted advertising can be delivered. G4 went after the same demo on non-sports loving guys (videogamers), and by all accounts that has failed. So, finding the niche is tricky, but when you do it...it is gold.

Soapnet was supposed to be the female ESPN. Indeed, in the early days, "SportsCenter" had its analog in "SoapCenter". But soaps do not have the same broad appeal for women that sports do for men. Indeed, I gather the home-and-gardening and entertainment (E!) channels are having more success with the female demo.

==

But there is a bigger problem than the "mixed" audience. There is the sheer fact that, when it comes to pop culture (music, movies, television), the younger generation does not like what the older generation does. (Of course there are exceptions). Young people use pop culture as an "individuation" tool...as a way of separating themselves and creating identities. They will REPUDIATE something that older people like, because they want to be separate. Plus, there is the sheer narcissism of wanting to see people "like me".

(Now, I know we have all seen those letters in SOD where the writer says 'I'm 18, and I don't just want to watch 18 year olds...I like seeing Bob Hughes on ATWT'. Good for that letter writer, but the NUMBERS show that letter writer is an anomaly...a "freak"...not the norm).

This is why "The Hills" and "Gossip Girl" are pop culture darlings. They may not have huge numbers, but they draw their niche with remarkable effectiveness.

For daytime serials to thrive, they need to last AT MOST five years. I imagine it would be possible to create a fictional universe (say, Oakdale or Genoa City) where new series are constantly situated within the same universe, and a few legacy characters get dragged from one serial to another.

As a lover of old chestnuts (like Y&R), I'm part of the problem. By filling the daypart with something that appeals to me, time that COULD be used to cultivate new audience members with shows for THEIR generation is lost.

Except of course...and this is the REAL horror for CBS and its' ilk...while the "big three" are wasting their time on uncool old folks programming for me (like Y&R), other networks are coming along...WHOLE NETWORKS...WHOLE NICHES...to fulfill the next generation. And so, year by year, like the soaps they program, the big three die off...obsolete dinosaurs from the pioneer age of broadcasting.

So you're basically saying that despite everything Brian Frons and others may try to do to reinvigorate their shows, they won't make it. Trying to turn a daytime soap into niche viewing for 18-34 year olds doesn't really seem to be working does it? Maybe there is something happening at ABC in terms of attracting those younger viewers I'm not seeing.

People forget that soap is like a hobby or a specific part of human activities, a really, really specific genre that (now) has only a handful of fans. Once it used to be different, but they have pretty much destroyed themselves with the help of the fans and network executives. They're like video games or classical music or Hans Zimmer and John Williams - some hate them, some adore them; those who love soaps constitute a small number, a number not big enough to fuel networks demanding advertising rates.

The never-ending game of survival is present even here. And we didn't expect anything other than that...

Yeah and I fear for ABC Daytime as a whole if that's the demo they want, and I get the feeling it is. Ever taken on of those survey's ABC Daytime does at times? They list age groups, and basically if you're not a teen they aren't interested..........

i think frons means well... he's trying to keep what is otherwise an aging and dying genre alive.

but i always laugh when i come here and people are complaining about beall or something and her ridiculous dialogue or the teens and how they talk... why does everyone have to say "bitch" and "skank" etc.

the answer is because that is how the coveted demo talks. all the stuff an older viewer rolls their eyes at -- "get your snack on" or whatever is stuff that is catered to that demo.

i've noticed that some of the writers people hate the most around here are the ones that write the most "young" - pop culture references, sexual innuendo, etc.

frons wants those writers because he's hoping that will help.

not sure it is, however. but that's a problem with the genre as a whole. there's just a whole lot more choices. the coveted demo is spending more time online reading perezhilton than wathcing soaps

    • If a soap actor or behind the scenes figure was roasted at any point in time, who would you have at the main table? This topic came about when I imagined a Friends episode (Joey, of course, would bomb at roasting). The Roast of Deidre Hall, circa 1997 Roastmaster: Drake Hogestyn Roasters: Jed Allan, Wayne Northrop, Joseph Mascolo, Eileen Davidson, Christie Clark, Alison Sweeney, Ken Corday, James E. Reilly, Andrea Hall, Jane Elliot, James Reynolds, Shannen Doherty, Wilford Brimley, and Frances Reid.
    • Amanda has been giving it to Abby ever since her and Chance walked in on them together. So great to hear.   I can see that. Lily and Damian are always a highlight to me.
    • I recall @Chris B asking about this but here is an interview Sheri Anderson did with SOU back in the fall of ‘89: Here is an article that I think is interesting, it is an interview with Shery Anderson, screenwriter of the ninth season THE WRITE STUFF: FALCON CREST’S SHERI ANDERSON: FROM DAYS TO NIGHTTIME By Richard Spencer Soap Opera Update, 1989 : At a time when the success of nighttime soaps is shaky, Sheri Anderson, former headwriter for DAYS OF OUR UVES, ANOTHER WORLD, GUIDING LIGHT and GENERAL HOSPITAL, makes the jump to the evening format with some new ideas to help strenthen the CBS California vineyard based soap opera FALCON CREST. "FALCON CREST is going to have a differnet tone that it never had before," headwriter Sheri Anderson expiains. "The people that I am working with are kind of an interesting mix. The executive producer, Joel Sumow, did the first years of MIAMI VICE and THE EQUALIZER, Bob Cochran, a Harvard MBA,and Cyrus Nowrasteh, who has done a number of features, are story editors. I am co-porducer, with a history in daytime, so we are a real different mix. We all kind of balance each other out in different ways. I am sort of the emotional side (coming from daytime) and they are more the gritty side." A lack of focus is what Sheri attributes to FALCON CREST's problems the last few seasons. "No one , seemed to knwo that the characters' motivations were. Pilar was a real good example. No one seemed to know what she wanted. This season it is clear that Pilar wants Lance. That is really her dream and goal tokeep Lance. She will do anything to do that. She will be making some sacrifices thís season that really jeopardize her relationship with Lance." While Pilar's character may be strongly in place, Maggie's is not. How will the show restructure in light of Maggie's drowning? " We are not trying to replace her, but we are adding another kind of strong heroine character. That character is Laruren Daniels. She's very earthy; married to a construction worker. Lauren. is the sister of Michael Sharp, Gregory Harrison's new character. "Michael is an extremely powerful adversary to Richard Channing. He will be more cynical than Richard and less emotionally motivated. For Michael it is all power and money. The audience will be more sympathetic toward Richard. He will be going through hell," Sheri reveáis with doom in her voice, "...Paying for his past sins " The complete opposite of Richard or Michael's intensity is the the new character of Charlíe St. James."Charlie is every woman's foolish choice," Sheri character sketches. "He's kind of indescribable; charismatic, totally unpredictable, charming, unnervtng. He's coming in as a love interest for Emma. He will be the first man to make Emma feel like a woman. She's really not victimized by him...she’s addicted to him. Charlie's presence will make her a little less flakey this season." But Emma is not the only one in store for major personality changes, also in the categroy is Frank. "We arebringing back somebody from his past," Sheri reveals "there will be a great secret that will come to ight." Speaking of characters from the past, are there any Sheri would like to return? "Everyone is fond of Ana-Alicia in her original role. At this point we don't have any plans to bring her back because we have some other character that are going to take the forefront." And if one thing is going to remain the same, it will be what Sheri recognizes as the theme of FALCON CREST "Quest for control of Falcon Crest. We have people trying to take control, and they are all taking it for different reasons. Some are emotioanl, some are revenge, but they each have a different eason for which they want Falcon Crest. And that is really the pivotal center. It is very earthy." Keeping the core of lite show intact is not the only thing nighttime shows have to do to stay interesting and acording to Sheri"I din't think night time shows have kept paces with changes in the viewing audience," Sheri answers by analyzing what exactly is primetime soaps* problem. ln datyime, you do over the years the shows stay on, but you are adapting to what people are accepting:faster-paced, or slower, or addíng more comedy, depending on the audience, and what they are buying. I don't think some of these shows in primetime have done that "We are trying to make the show as much episodio as it is continuing. We are cutting down the number of scenes in each act to get the audience more involved. But some of the shows, and this happens in daytime al so, don’t let the characters really grow," Sheri certainly made chracters develop during her daytime career, but especially on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, which is the source for her favourite stories of her careen ”When Víctor carne to Salem and revealed tha the was really Bo’s father, it caused such a ripple effect for Kim, Shane, Román, Bo, Hope, Caroline and Sean. I also liked bringing Kayla back for Patch.” Having written for Kristian Alfonso' s Hope (DAYS) and now Pilar on FC, Sheri distínguishes between the two characters. "Pilar is a woman, but Hope was growing up. Hope was more innocent and Pilar is not Pilar has an intelligent strength where Hope did all the wrong things for all the right reasons." Pilar wíll be the only one retuming from her family, while Angela Channing’s appearances will be limited (per Jane Wyman's contract). "But Richard will be taking a very strong role which is very similar to Angela Angelad presence will be felt in every epísode/ Sheri informs. A lot of people complained about the women of FALCON CREST being wishy-washy They certainly aren't this season Sheri emphasizes. "Lauren will be strong, especially after her brother Michael steais Richard’s children and places them with her, Frnak’s step daughter will be very devious, indicateive of Kathleen Turner in “Body Heat” And Gregory Harrison is fabulous," Sheri reports with joy. "He is so different from his character on TRAPPER JOHN, M.D He is very similar to Michael Douglas in the film 'Wall Street'. FALCON CREST viewers will find a much richer textrae, getting away from the glamour and really going to substance and style." Sheri concludes, "it will be a show to watch, We are trying to bring in a new audience, and at the same time, respect our past audience."
    • Well, if he's had a series of mini-strokes along the way (which, IIRC, he did), then that influences things. I can say, from my experience of having had two full-blown strokes, that recovery periods were very, very different, both in terms of difficulty and length of time.
    • Whhhhhhhhhhhattttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was everybody out this weekend.
    • She did have a thing with him in the late '90s, before she inexplicably disappeared with no mention as to why, although I can't remember if they had sex.
    • I don't believe she did. She did sleep with Simon, believing he was a Spaulding.

Do they move dead people on a gurney past that desk, too? -- 8 months for Bill to recover from a "small stroke"? Uh....I don't think so. Is anyone researching this stuff? The hospital stuff is not coming off as realistic. -- It's good that Derek and Ashley are being integrated into other stories, but it's a real stretch to say Leslie was "stalking" Ashley. It makes Derek seem dumber than we already think he is. -- Ashley spends a lot of time having small talk while she's at work. -- Chelsea is embarrassing. Period. -- Tomas is supposed to pick up the slack for Bill, but he has time to have worthless conversations with Leslie? OK then. -- Kat is destroying the case against Leslie, but that's clearly the way to keep Leslie on the canvas.
    • 6-3   I almost let my system just delete the episode just like with B&B. I am now questioning if I should have. lol.   I just can't believe that Cole sat there and started to get sick and then only Victoria off and ran off and everyone basically went back to what they were doing at Nikki's birthday party. Cole was too much of a vet character for that. And now story back off-screen.   I did chuckle at how much Victor pay Kyle dust. And now Kyle with this deal and a promise to leave town if he hurts Claire. smh. As if Victor isn't going to make that happen.   It was lovely to see Ashley. And actually (misdressed and all) Abby.    And I liked Claire's dress.
