Paul Rauch hired by Y&R

I told Sylph this, but I think we'll notice Rauch's influence on Y&R when we start getting more campy stories and characters!

I've said this for a while, but Y&R's missing that campy element it used to have. Latham and Maria have tried to make Y&R a little to realistic in some ways, forgetting that campy villains and storylines were also an intricate part of Y&R's identity.

Rauch might be a tyrant, but when the writing is strong, he can produce a quality show. Truth be told, despite his flaws, I've decided he's better equipped to be an EP than Josh Griffith ever was.

Rauch's position as Executive Creative Consultant isn't a nothing position, Latham joined in the same capacity in November 2005 and her influence was INSTANTLY felt on the show.

Rauch is better than LML and he's probably better than Griffith.

Rauch is Sony's influence, he most recently worked as a consulting producer for a Sony produced Russian telenovela called "Bednaya Nastya" which was a period piece.

We'll see how much influence he has, MAB seems to have a tight grip on the writing...I'd like for this consulting gig to work out.

I'm slightly biased in Rauch's favor. He's the one who signed Joan Collins to GL for a $weet deal that treated her like the star that she is. So he gets thumbs up in my book.

You know if Rauch does get the EP job at Y&R, he could always worked really well with Maria and Hogan. He's not going to piss Maria off, her family owns the damn show. He'll most likely be there to help strengthen her material and make sure the execution and producing aspect is in place. Y&R's needed stronger execution for a while now, Rauch has done that, no matter how bad the writing has been at other shows he's worked for.

I still say he'd make a better EP than Josh Griffith, and I can see him firing tons of dead weight on Y&R as EP. Everything from the actors to the stylists.

There was speculation that Y&R would be getting a new EP by the end of the summer, if it's not Rauch it's someone else. I think Josh Griffith's days are numbered and he couldn't be gone sooner, if you ask me!

I agree with you, Griffith is a weak EP for certain. If Rauch gets the EP gig I agree that, essentially, he'll be an execution man, carrying out MAB's vision. SHE's the boss, lets not kid ourselves! What MAB wants MAB is going to get. It's a new era at Y&R, the EP no longer has the push that LML did...after all...it wasn't LML's production values that really pissed people off, it was the effing writing. Granted, the production values fell to sh*t during her run, but I could have sucked it up if the writing hadn't been so effing terrible.

The only reason why I think Rauch won't get the EP gig is because of his age. Let's face it, he's 74, that's OLD in the entertainment business which is an ageist business to be sure. That being said, he's behind the scenes...he might be the one Sony and the Bells want.

No one thought Rauch would return to daytime when he went to GL in 1996, for some reason I can see it happening. Executive Creative Consultant is a big consulting position that wields a lot of power. Latham joined in that capacity initially and her impact was immediately felt on the show.

Griffith is so gone by the end of the year, I just wish we knew for certain who will replace him.

Michael Logan hinted that Rauch was joining in this position to be "groomed" to possibly take over the reigns of the show. Make of that what you will.

At most soaps being a creative consultant means "You're a Writer Who Doesn't Write" but at Y&R creative consultants do wield significant power, you're totally right. My hope is that Rauch, if indeed he is to be the EP of the show, realizes that he isn't Jesus H Christ himself and allows MAB and Hogan to write while he produces. Micromanaging will NOT work on Y&R, LML failed at it and if Rauch does it he will fail as well.

Alls I know is that when Joan Collins described her time at GL she didn't have a harsh word for Rauch and actually enjoyed working for him. It was MADD that got her venom: she insisted that Joan Collins, THE Joan Collins, pay for her own limo to and from the studio. The nerve.

You are right about the campy elements of the villians and stuff - even those were under Bell. He didn't go over the top with it but he did have that some.

Another element that Bell loved to focus on both in front of and behind the scenes was women's weight. The Ashlee story on GL is so much something that Bell would have done.

I am not sure why he got obsessed with it on Y&R as he never seem to touch on it with Days but he did his first women's weight story back in the late 70's with Kay Herble. I forget the characters name but her husband was played by Anthony Herrera. Then of course Trish Stewart had back stage troubles with Bell because she had put on baby weight. Then later he retold the Kay Herble character story with Traci Abbott and then Amy Gibson was given the edict by Bell to lose weight or be fired.

We haven't had a woman in awhile on Y&R to deal with weight on screen but of course the rumors were that Adrianne Leon was fired for her weight.

So did he like weight stories as much as he liked incest ones? ;) I think women's weight stories can be tricky to do (wasn't one on Y&R associated with lesbianism?) - and honestly would prefer it to be a bit less of an issue--like it's become for Marcie on OLTL (although my sis did point out that she's the only young woman on the show who's even slightly heavy lol--Llanview has good genes)

I'll say this much for Paul Rauch: even when he was running GL, and his writers were doing things with the show that turned my stomach, I wasn't as bored as I have been these past few months at Y&R.

The thing about Rauch is loved his OLTL, it was so fun and campy and high production values. I loved his first two years at GL but it went downhill. During his last six months when he was paired with Millie Taggart the show got really very good. I know so many GL fans hated Rauch but I would take his GL in a heartbeat back over Ellen Wheeler's GL which I just cannot stand which she has done. Wheeler is not going anywhere, apparently Bloom just adores her.

    • Victoria Principal clearly stacked her Dallas coins real good. In the grand scheme of things, she was smart to walk away from Dallas when she did.
    • When Robert Calhoun became EP I thought GL was finally hitting its stride after some pretty rough years. Unfortunately the ratings during Robert Calhoun's run did not reflect the quality of the show.
    • There was a five week break between the last Friday episode and the Thursday episodes which were the final four episodes. I have a feeling the final four episodes were refilmed to wrap up the storylines.
    • Yes, I forgot there was a gap between his exit from GL and his start at ATWT. This almost makes me want to cry. He really turned ATWT around (and good for them). It would have been great if someone had done the same for GL. Can't imagine who. The Dobsons were doing Santa Barbara at this point. I mainly blame Kobe. She may not have been the worst EP they ever had, but she almost totally destroyed the Bauers and decimated much of the rest of the cast, sometimes for egotistical reasons. That was a huge mistake and made it that much harder for the show to recover.
    • Douglas Marland began at As the World Turns in September 1985 but it took about a year for his run to show growth in the ratings. 1986 As the World Turns becomes CBS's #2 daytime drama after Y&R.
    • This is not at all surprising. Watching the recently uploaded episodes, the uneveness is SO apparent. Characters are changing at the drop of a hat. The stories are close to incoherent. It's a mess, and we're only up to May. What a fall from grace. An Emmy-winning show with good ratings and within a few short years hitting possible cancelation territory.  I'm surprised CBS and/or P&G didn't try to do SOMETHING to restore its former glory. Was Marland still at ATWT at this point?
    • I think she did, yes. The only part of that return I remember appreciating was the ripoff they did of Earrings of Madame De, where a secretly broke India sold a trinket and Ross or Alan (I think it was Ross) then bought it for her, not knowing it was hers.
    • 6-4   Getting around to the rewatching and I guess Dani/Bill/Hayley as A story is coming around better to me. I hope that means that I will feel different about Friday's episode which first time around I felt was more of a Wednesday/Thursday episode. Anita's story and Dani/Bill/Hayley (with Kat vs SilkPress being a solid B plot to keep the SilkPress storyline alive, but NOT A story) have been the focus for this past week. So I'm worried I'll feel a way when I get back to Friday's episode. I guess I'm about to find out.   I know I have issues with Dani/Bill/Hayley coming back into focus since the much better paced SilkPress storyline is truly where it's at with so much aftermath/new direction to explore. However, I'm finding that...just like with the story of Martin's secret being slowly woven back into the story narrative...I care a little bit more for it since it's been background since Week 3, Month 1. IMHO the characters...outside of Hayley...have been developed in other plots. The past week and a half has had Dani and Andre growing closer and they have gotten to the 'third month what are we?' talk that I expect in all relationships in real life. And I liked how the writers have slowly had friction between them to see what they are made of? Is it still just a booty call or can it be more? Meanwhile, Bill has been hiding his physical issues for months. Too busy messing with other people's marriages.

So now that they have some more POV to them, it was good to see an organic...and yes, it was organic...reason for them to be in the same room. In this case...the hospital room. Lord, Karla and Timon have such great chemistry. And Dani and Bill were so acting like exes. No wonder Hayley feels threatened. Oh, well. lol. Bonus...the drama with Bill has Hayley and Naomi back in each other's orbit. They don't have enough scenes together.    You all know I was waiting for Anita's story. So how am I feeling? Pretty good. TT has been playing it to the hilt. And I was not expecting the story of a fourth member who killed themselves after being pushed out. And it's had a build. First through Tracy. And now with Sharon...who is swiftly being established as a piece of work. A Have-Not (if not Has-Been) who is not above scheming. Okay. lol. I liked the conversation between Anita and Vernon where she told him the truth, and he tried to hold her up. Whether she deserved it or not, it was good to see. I'm sure all of the secrets are not out yet so I look forward to more. Cuz we know they are not cancelling the reunion. Which fingers crossed...will be at the police fundraiser.     Honestly, I continued to be impressed with how the writers have kept Silk Press Sheila out of jail, but still playing the beats of it all. She's definitely in covering her tracks mode, and it's great to watch. It's also great to see her mixing it up with different characters. I was happy to get the long-awaited showdown between her and Nosy Nurse and Nosy Nurse READ...HER...DOWN. I was just disappointed Nosy Nurse spilled some tea. And that led to SilkPress's scene with Andre. And then Andre...lord...talked too much.   C plot this episode has been Chelesa's love life. I was wondering where it was going to go after her talk with Vernon. Enter...Mystery Woman. I wonder what her secret would be that would get in her way with Chels. Related to an enemy of the Duprees? Married? I am intrigued. And I do like Chelesa getting the spotlight because daytime does not really do it like how they are doing it with her.    Can Kat and Jacob get a spinoff? lol.
    • 1986 began with the EP change from Gail Kobe to Joe Willmore and the HW change from Pamela Long to Jeff Ryder. Over the course of 1986 there was turnover in the HW ranks: Jeff Ryder, Jeff Ryder and Mary Ryan Munisteri as co-HWs, Mary Ryan Munisteri and Ellen Barrett as co-HWs, Joseph Manetta, Joseph Manetta and Sheri Anderson as co-HWs. The 1986 ratings reflected the quality of the show. GL was saved from cancel territory in 1986 because Capitol was still CBS's lowest-rated daytime drama.
    • As Michael should be...DARK.   I'm just getting through my first few scenes of Rory as Michael. And I'm already picking up chemistry with LW, EMcCoy, and SMattson from the jump. I liked Rory as Noah on Y&R, but felt it was wasted potential. So far...he's proving me right.
