Me too, I loved Matthew.

So many soaps tried to have their own contemporary tart with a heart Kat Slater-type character over the past 10 years, it's funny. Kat had a huge impact on the show and soaps in general during her original 5 year run on the show.

I would definitely say the McQueen's on Hollywoaks were fashioned on the Slater sisters on EastEnders.

Vicky was such a lost opportunity, things got especially bad when they had her switch accents with no explanation. I think it also hurt that they couldn't bring Michelle back.

If Sharon ever returns, I have a bad suspicion that they'll go back to pairing her with Phil, or if Grant returns, they'll revisit that. I don't know if I ever want to see that again.

Has the show ever had a recurring supporting Oriental character? I can't recall off the top of my head, but an Oriental family would be so interesting and different from what all the other soaps are offering.

Do you have any ideas for a potential new family?

Michelle not being there hurt a lot. On many levels, with Den as well as Vicky and Sharon and Pauline. I almost wish they had just recast.

I do think that Dennis, Sharon, Chrissie, and to a lesser degree Den, helped revive the Watts and showed what the family can be.

I don't think Grant will ever be back but if he does come back I agree I wouldn't want him with Sharon, or Phil with Sharon. Hopefully that would not happen, it's so lazy. The past is sometimes the past for a reason. I really want Sharon to find out that Phil caused Dennis to die, or helped anyway.

The last Oriental character I remember on Eastenders was a con artist named Li who was involved with Mickey Miller. Santer wrote her out in summer 2007. She didn't want to commit to Mickey so she moved to be with her mother.

As for ideas, I would bring Kelvin in, perhaps single, with some kids, and an estranged wife who pops in and out.

I would bring in a lesbian couple, one of whom used to be well off but lost a lot of money in the recession, the other came from a poorer background. They could have one or two kids. The one who is more from money fits into Walford more easily, in spite of some culture shock, whereas the one who was poorer struggles to deal with memories of the rough treatment she faced when she lived in places like Walford.

I would also bring in Kenny Beale for a visit, to introduce some of his kids (perhaps Elizabeth who was on the show with him in 1988) and grandkids. I know the actor who played Kenny is dead but they can recast.

That's right. I forgot about Diane. That could be interesting.

I keep meaning to watch more of that channel. I am afraid of jinxing it.

I was just thinking about Peggy and how the yelling tends to suit her character...I think Eastenders has two modes of iconic female characters, those who are loud and proud to mask their pain but are dying inside (Peggy, Angie, Kat, Pat, Stacey), and the woman who struggles more quietly but is a survivor (Michelle, Sharon, Kathy - when she was on the show). I think the show was trying some of the former with Roxy and the latter with Ronnie, although it hasn't quite worked out.

I'm not sure what the recipe is for a male character, although the "hard man" seems to be the most known.

I've always liked Jake Wood but there's always been a certain wall there for the Max character, mostly down to his stories always being about him screwing up. I feel like the last year has broken through a wall for the character, and I feel like if they keep on this way he could become one of my all time favorite characters (although that list is kind of odd -- I'm sure Sue Osman, Nigel, Punk Mary, etc. would get a shrug from a lot of viewers). I also think he could become a huge asset to the show. To me he's carried a lot of 2010, even if he hasn't gotten the attention.

Max and Kat could be riveting. I say they should think about going for it.

I also wouldn't mind seeing him in more scenes with Denise. They had that bad date a few years ago.

I'm so glad that over the last 5-6 months they have had Denise stop screaming. I think for a few years someone thought every woman on EE needed to scream her lines, if she could. I don't think that suited Diane Parish.

I didn't realize photos had already come out for Tanya and Greg. I saw one at Walford Web's forums, as a banner. He looks a bit terrified behind the smile, perhaps because he knows Max will try to tear him limb from limb...or Tanya said, "I buried my last man alive," right before the photo was taken...

Yeah, it's spoken about at this Masterclass panel discussing primarily the live episode. John Yorke, Diederick Santer, and Simon Ashdown all contribute to the discussion.

Simon Ashdown also says he would like to bring David Wicks back. I wouldn't be surprised if he returns in the next year...

They tried to bring David back this year (which must be why they suddenly acted like Bianca longed for David), but Patsy said that Michael French was too busy working.

I still think there are plausible ways to bring back Kathy or Cindy. If you don't see someone die oncamera, they don't have to be dead. Bringing back Kathy or Cindy is no more "shark jumping" than burying a man alive.

    • Lois and Gloria did the right thing I feel knowing it was Camila that raised Gio has BL feeling some jealousy No one is saying that Camila was a bad mother to Gio I believe it will be Gio saying that Camila was great to him, thanking Lois and Gloria to get BL to see truth
    • Its realistic for Dani and  true of how the character thinks and operates. We've known her long enough to by that this would be consistent with her past characterizatioin
    • Random takes: - What was even the point of that jeweler guy? Also—Dani was borderline harassing him. - I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I want Jacob and Kat to happen. I need something messy to completely dismantle the Duprees—and Katomas just isn’t cutting it.  - I officially can’t stand Jacob and his wife. Same goes for Anita and Vernon. - Hayley’s corset was just as ugly as it looked uncomfortable. - I genuinely don’t remember when or how Derek and Ashley reconciled—and I’m someone who didn’t even mind their storyline! LMAO. - Tuesday’s episode was a mess. - Dani finding out about Hayley’s pregnancy and immediately thinking, “She’s faking it”—huh?! What writer thought that was a realistic reaction? I get denial, but that leap was absurd. I agree the ‘Leslie Victorious’ moment was way OTT. But hey, at least I wasn’t yawning. The following episode, where she handed over her daughter’s last few belongings was much better. - I can’t with the constant back-and-forth between Orphey Gene’s and the Country Club. I forgot this was such a soap trope, but even back in my loyal viewer days (late ‘90s, early 2000s), it wasn’t this bad. While GH has a ton of beautiful sets, we’re stuck with the same three—and half of them are ugly. Also: it’s been way too long since we had a party, gala, or any kind of event. I know the Richardsons’ anniversary gala (back in late April) has had a big ripple effect, but I was kinda getting used to those large-scale episodes. Fingers crossed they don’t go with Guza.
    • The horrific comments execs and writers make when they justify rape storylines or keeping rapists as love interests is just so icky. I remember Ron Carlivati's comments about the reraping of Marty storyline on OLTL. Made my skin crawl.  No matter what you think of her, Susan Lucci could have demanded front burner storylines but she never did. She was happy to be part of an ensemble. I never got that vibe from Zimmer.  For me, Reva was just not a character I cared that much about after a certain point no matter how talented Zimmer is/was. I think Zimmer had a keener eye for what made a good storyline, but she was less willing to take a backseat if it meant someone else got to shine. I'm trying to recall if she ever mentions Michelle Forbes in her book--one of the few times the viewers did not care about Reva in a storyline. My sense is if she did, it was probably some backhanded remark about how she had to show Forbes the ropes.
    • GH was good? I havent watched since Joss went away to do her traininig and Lulu had just called Brooklyn out for having Dante's baby and not telling him
    • BTG: A-  DAYS: B+  Eastenders: C
    • There was a rumor that Jean will die and that’s probably why she’s back then
    • There has been some confusion about Michael & facial burns. Please see this post: https://bsky.app/profile/shallotpeel.bsky.social/post/3lqkrryu54226 I've chosen to put this here instead of the Classic Thread because it is now with the appearance of recast Michael that this has come up. Different places online, including at least one podcast, remarks have been made about how remarkable it is that he is without facial scarring. Other fans say it was clear from the first that he did not have facial burns. What is included in this post is 2 screengrabs where you can see his face at the hospital & a very quick edit of that day in the hospital.
    • Put me in the LOVE KMH camp. As a poster alluded to above, her detractors seem to come from people who first experienced the 80s Emily actress. And that's often the case with soaps, myself included. I enjoy the original actor so much that I just never take to the recast. However, KMH played Emily far longer than the original - for almost 20 years - and when she had great material, she was great. I get the sense she didn't like playing the whiny oh-woe-is-me Emily which was all the material she got from about 1996 until she took over the Intruder in late '99/early '00 and got to play a stronger kiss-ass woman who didn't care what anyone thought of her. (Some would call that a bitch but, if a man was in that role, he'd just be called a smart and savvy businessman.) Her relationship with Hal was great. The transformation was done realistically and I thoroughly enjoyed those years the best out of all. Once the writers decided to break up those two, they went back to writing Emily half the time as whiny and pathetic. I preferred when the writers made her stronger.
    • Hahaha - I do. I've always been the type, though, that can't miss anything. I get FOMO, so I'll not skip episodes or fast forward anything. There are only a few TV shows I've dropped because they got so bad vs. sticking it out to the end.  The promise that GL 1997 is better is what keeps me going. I especially want to see the fallout of Blake's lie about her twins and then Annie's descent which I believe won Watros's Emmy.
