Sean did meet an untimely demise on a New Years Eve (I forget which year) at the hands of a little thug called Liam. In turn, Tanya left Liam as he died of an asthma attack.

Blowing up the Harts on the boat was the work of former Coronation Street producer Brian Park, who oversaw the first revamp of the show back in late 1998/early 1999. The original premise of the show was the focus on the Harts. Brian Park saw this as an obstacle to the show's sucess so removed the Harts and relocated the show to west London.

I just screened the flash forward episode and it was terrible. I can't believe they've locked themselves in until May with such an uninspired episode. I feel like more should've happened, it was underwhelming. I do think I could've enjoyed something like the church bombing by Niall and then going back and seeing him insinuate his way into the McQueen's lives. The stakes here just don't seem big. Calvin got shot. So what?

I wonder how much longer Amy will be around. Everyone in her life is gone, except Ste, and they might turn him bad again.

I do think there were a lot of people who could have been fired before the Ashworths. I almost wonder if Marquess has been told not to get rid of most of the teens. I hope not, there are a lot of dead weight teens on the show now.

I also hope they surprise people and don't give the Dog in the Pond back to the Osbornes. After the endless weeping, screaming, and misery of their storylines in that place in 2008, I have absolutely no desire to ever see them there again.

I didn't think the Ashworths added anything to the show in a while. I'm not sad to see them go. Hannah was always my favourite, and Emma Rigny was already set to leave anyway.

I hated that the Ashworths took ownership of The Dog, they were such am poor fit for that place, IMO.

But I think this is definitely the beginning of Hollyoaks being reshaped and more firings will be on the way.

That's a good choice if you wanted to axe an entire family, but I am surprised they'd get rid of Josh. He's young and still had so much to give. I thought he was working well in the halls. It'll be interesting to see what happens there. Since those characters don't have many family connections they could all go. I'd predict now that the Valentine's are all gone. Amy is gone and so is Ste. I wonder if Tony and Dom will survive. I don't think Loretta will.

It's not a recent thing.

I wasn't a watcher of Brookside, but did watch Family Affairs and still do watch The Bill.

Both shows were rendered unrecognisable by Mr Marquess. To his credit, The Bill gained a new audience and became fashionable (in a different way). To this day, it struggles to shake the 'soap' tag (despite the best efforts of current Executive Producer Johnathan Young).

Family Affairs improved massively but had other problems (poor advertising, being on Channel 5, channel 5 being more interested in Australian soap, etc).

And Hollyoaks clearly needs an overhaul. This is only the beginning...

There's no reason to get rid of Tony or Ste, if you ask me. Ste is a very complex character played by a good actor, and he can go anywhere. Tony is the last original cast member left and while the character has been drifting and depressing for a few years now, he can still be salvaged and put into more of a mentor role.

I think the worst of the Valentines are Sasha and Calvin. I would axe Sasha and keep Lauren and Leo, and bring back Valerie.

If it were me I would get rid of Anita, Ravi, Elliot (Garnon Davies is a wonderful actor but there is nowhere left for this character), Archie, Sasha, Loretta, Spencer, India, Carmel, and a few more teens. After that it would be time to see if there is story for Dom, Gilly, Jake, or Nancy. I assume Kris is leaving next year.

I would write heavily for Malachy, Darren, Cindy, Steph, and give Myra a big story again.

New 'Oaks boss shakes up production

Hollyoaks showrunner Paul Marquess has replaced three of the soap's leading producers in a bid to streamline the programme's creative process, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.

Marquess, who joined the show last month following Lucy Allan's short stint at the top, took the decision to restructure the top-tier hierarchy at the soap in a bid to create a more effective production team.

Henry Swindell, Caroline Roby and Rachel Hall have all been released from their contracts with show makers Lime Pictures in Liverpool as the position of 'producer' has now been made redundant. Instead, a more streamlined approach has been adopted.

Former head of Hollyoaks' production and ex-Coronation Street producer Trina Fraser returns to the soap as line producer, while once-EastEnders and The Bill story editor Claire Fryer assumes the role of Hollyoaks' series editor.

Speaking exclusively to DS, Marquess said: "I'm delighted that Claire has joined the team as series editor and that Trina has returned to Hollyoaks as my line producer. The editorial changes to the team mark the beginning of the show's reinvigoration and I'm confident that the three of us will form a focused team that can drive Hollyoaks to new heights."

A Hollyoaks source this morning said: "There really is a buzz about the place now. We've a fresh direction and Paul's certainly the man for the job. He's a breath of fresh air and we've every confidence in him."

The changes to the teen soap's production lineup have taken immediate effect and episodes under the new team will begin airing from the middle of the year.

    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
    • Oh good, so I don't have to wait too long haha. I'm glad she cares about seeing Bill graduate. I'm guessing I'm in for a bumpy ride between Bill and Matt, if he's going to be his caretaker? Who else could it be, maybe Josh?

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
