I've been watching Dallas again recently, making my way through the early years, and I think I've discovered another thing that set this era of primetime soap apart from the modern shows. Dallas, Falcon Crest, and Knots Landing weren't afraid to give you a self-contained episode from time to time in their earliest seasons, and that helped TREMENDOUSLY when it came to building characters and relationships. I don't include Dynasty simply because they were full-blown serial from the beginning.

The episode that got me thinking of this is "The Dove Hunt." The handful of episodes that preceded it in season 3 kept tight on the main stories of the time: Sue Ellen's depression, Pam's medical woes and pregnancy, and the Ewing Oil business dealings. But then out of nowhere comes this episode that mainly takes you away from all of that and focuses on a plot that begins and ends within the episode yet creates waves that are still felt several episodes down the line. It gave them time to let the characters breathe and exist outside of the roles they played in the continuing stories, thus making them richer and realer. A huge problem I have with even the best of the modern serialized shows is that everything is SO. MUCH. ABOUT. THE STORYLINE. that we never see who these people are outside of that. They don't become real people who laugh and cry and have good days and bad days -- they're merely the antagonist or the protagonist or whatever mixture of the two TPTB had concocted.

Stuff like this also gives your show more depth, I find. It can be light and dark and every tone in between when the time calls for it, whereas so much of what we have today is eternally ominous and tense. I think there's something to be said for having just enough story tension below the surface for it to be noticed but not so much that you literally can not do anything else with your characters.

Most of the time serialized shows now are just serialized for the sake of it, not because they have anything to stretch out. It's the same as so many shows now having love triangles and breakups/makeups 50 times just because they assume that's what you're supposed to do. It bores me to tears. It's one of the reasons I don't watch any of the superhero shows. I'd rather watch old Superfriends cartoons on a loop than hear "Olicity" fans bitching 24/7 because their OTP are in turmoil yet again.

Great pic!  Punk Anderson looks good….glad he is still alive. Its a shame Morgan Brittany wasn't in the new Dallas on TNT. That lady is one fierce actress.

Nice to see Christopher Atkins in the pic too….its too bad Timothy Patrick Murphy didnt live to join Lucy's many loves….

Yup…I remember every year being excited for the season cliffhanger and then the season premiere…..Dallas still remains the best soap of them all…its the only one that was rebooted …..It was nice to see the show again for 3 more years…but the glory years were golden…..love me some Angelica Nero….LOL

      On May 27, Johnny spoke to Sami on the phone, and learned that Sami and Sydney were trying to fly in from Sicily, but were stopped by a volcanic eruption because the ash had grounded all the planes. As discussed on the May thread, ash from Mt. Etna in Sicily caused planes to be grounded in summer 2024, so Cwikly/Ford would have known that.  (I just learned that Mt. Etna has been considered "active" with intermittent activity since 2022, including February, April, and May 2025.) Friday May 30, Will said that Sami and Sydney found another flight and will be here soon. Well, Sami and Sydney got out just in time, because … There was (and still is ongoing) a huge eruption of Mt. Etna that began very early Monday morning June 2 Italy time (which would be Sunday night June 1st Chicago time) and a volcanic ash plume had reached an altitude of around 6,400 metres (around 3 or 4 miles high) https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/mount-etna-eruption-volcano-smoke-lava-live-updates-b2761911.html

      Agree to disagree. Like first, love second. OH, agree, agree, agree! Legendary Featherstone, you're not dressing this one well at all. Petite woman with ample bosom, wrong clothes = awful  matronly looking ugh. I'm sorry but I felt hit over the head with everything each of them thought & felt for about 6 more days than I felt I had signed on for.  I don't know you well enough to know if you will know when I'm teasing, so I've just warned you that I am when I say, I hate for you that you haven't actually met Danielle before. LOL. To me it was just a natural take.  I have no problem going back & forth between those two focal sites. But, I am certainly aware that early on I had an expectation of being really into their having 27 sets & that has definitely not been the realization. And, yes, for now, Frank is still heads above any & all others with us & sets IMO.  Huh? Guza gone. I have it in my head that he was only willing to come out of retirement (and presumed mourning) for a "certain amount of time" to help get this new creature launched, but had no desire to stay & so was one of the "over-staffed intentionally" that we were told about. Of course there's been no official word on the circumstances of his leaving.  But, you might mean go with Guza as in a style, if so, ignore the last para.

      I'm so pleased we have such fan engagement about Dani. Reminds me of some other soap characters. I think it's because they are "polarizers" which is a word I may have just made up. They are polarizing on their shows to other characters & to story & they are polarizing in the audience as fans seem to have extreme reactions to them, love & hate, not middling neutrality, ya know? Well, it's a theory.  To me the human being you seek has been amply shown especially to two people & both more or less recently. Her sister bond with Nicole, whoa, has knocked me back & blown me away. And, with Chelsea, over her budding sexual identity and awareness. She gathered instantly that something was up with that daughter & was laser focused on her for several scenes. Then, for a third, she & Pamela have finally, also recently, been so real & genuine & authentic.

      Thanks, Paul, I did not know about his interest in the comedic elements or that he was one of our many people who came from the network! I have always liked Marlena de la Croix's writing, which is not to say I 100% agree with her. She's been a member of my FB soap group for a good long time & she actually posts, which I love. Recently I posted about an e-copy of Robert LaGuardia's SOAP WORLD that is free to borrow like a library e-book but on the Internet Archive site & I posted that at the time of their publications, all of his soap opera books were the gold standard.  She immediately posted about "Bob" who was her close friend & how much she still misses him to this day & that he loved to talk soaps & was also a nice guy, etc. which I was over the moon to have her share about the author & his time etc. like that!!!
