'90210' spinoff not Thomas' priority

By Nellie Andreeva

April 14, 2008

Rob Thomas is taking a back seat on the CW's "Beverly Hills, 90210" spinoff to focus on his other two pilots at ABC.

Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah ("What About Brian") are in talks to come aboard "90210" and do a rewrite on Thomas' pilot script.

The CW and producing studio CBS Paramount Network TV fast-tracked "90210" late in the development process and tapped Thomas to pen the pilot script on a very tight timetable. Thomas was able to churn out a first draft in a week, but while he was writing, ABC picked up his two scripts there, "Cupid" and "Good Behavior," to pilots. That moved "90210" to third position for Thomas' show services.

Thomas, who has made tweaks to the "90210" script and has been attending casting sessions for the pilot, will continue to serve as an executive producer on the pilot and the potential series.

But given his limited availability as his ABC pilots are also gearing up for production, CBS Par had been looking to bring another writer to do a rewrite of the "90210" pilot script. Thomas had been involved in the process and had suggested potential scribes.

Sachs and Judah would pen a new version of the script and executive produce the pilot for "90210," a contemporary spinoff from the hit Fox series that revolved around a three-generational Beverly Hills family.

The search is still under way for a showrunner for the potential series as UTA-repped Sachs and Judah are entertaining overtures from other studios for a development deal.

Awww....man. I knew this would happen since Rob has so many new projects in the works. I'm kinda hoping this ABC projects fail so he can come back and be the showrunner of the 90210 spinoff.

Garth Leaves CBS Pilot Amid '90210' Buzz

LOS ANGELES (April 16) - Jennie Garth has abruptly departed from a CBS comedy pilot, raising speculation that she will return to the "Beverly Hills, 90210" fold in a spinoff being developed at the CW network.

Garth had been cast in CBS' "My Best Friend's Girl," which revolves around two best friends whose relationship becomes complicated when one (Tim Peper) starts dating the ex-wife of the other (Josh Cooke).

Garth was to play the ex-wife. She left after the table read Monday, in what was described as a mutual decision between her and the producers. Garth has been coping with the death of her father, who passed away after she was cast in the project. Canadian actress Kristin Booth is replacing her.

Meanwhile, it had been reported that Rob Thomas, who wrote the script for the "90210" spinoff, has been looking to recruit Garth to reprise her role as Kelly Taylor. The character would possibly return to her alma mater as a fashion design teacher.

I remember Aaron Spelling saying in an interview before he died that he regretted not having racial diversity in the original 90210. Hopefully the spinoff will reflect the times and stick with it.

Yay for Jenny! I really hope she's joining the spinoff. :)

In other casting news: http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2008/04/annalynne-mccor.html

AnnaLynne McCord (Nip/Tuck) has joined the cast of CW's planned spinoff of Beverly Hills 90210, from executive producer Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars). McCord will play Naomi, a hot, rich, and popular Beverly Hills high schooler (is there any other kind?). There are still many roles to be cast for the drama, which is in contention for fall, but Thomas has already cast Dustin Milligan (The Messengers) as Ethan, a likable star athlete.

Published reports have said the spinoff will revolve around the Mills family, whose matriarch, Tabitha, is a 60-something has-been actress and alcoholic. Tabitha's adult son, Harry, moves back home to care for his mother. Joining him are his wife Celia, an Olympic athlete-turned-personal trainer, and their two 16-year-old kids who will may make up the new 90210 crew.

Yes!! AnnaLynne

OMG! I love this girl. She was a hot mess on "American Heiress" (ALW's telenovela that got canceled).

Uh, AnnaLynne may be hot but she can't act her way out of a paper bag, and I'm being nice. Say what you will about the original 90210, but the acting on there was always good with the exception of a couple of actors.

Hilary joining ‘90210’?

Duff could be next Brenda Walsh in 'Beverly Hills' remake

Here’s some juicy 90210 gossip to start your day right: word has it that Hilary Duff could be signing on to the upcoming Beverly Hills, 90210 remake.

E! Online reports that producers for the CW show have approached Duff, offering her the starring role on a platter.

While it’s yet unknown whether the former Lizzie McGuire headliner is even interested, it does set our imaginations afire. With her sweeter-than-sweet image, does she have what it takes to join the dark side as the next Brenda (Shannen Doherty) who’ll spar with a Kelly (Jennie Garth) type character?

Word has it Duff’s character is Annie Mills, a moody Beverly Hills High student who digs theatre acting, just like Brenda. Also, just like Brenda, she’ll struggle to fit in with the alternative crowd and will be tight with her brother Dixon, who’s adopted.

And, speaking of Jennie Garth, will the alum of the original series return for the remake? Last week, rumours were flying that she would sign on, due to the fact that she abruptly dropped out of the CBS comedy pilot My Best Friend’s Girl.

With all this speculation, it helps to know that two other roles have been filled for sure: Dustin Milligan (Runaway) and AnnaLynne McCord (Nip/Tuck) have already signed on to the teen-tastic show.

Good choice, loved her on Full House. Now the next casting scoop I wanna hear is that Shannen Doherty is joining the show as Brenda and that her character will be the schools acting teacher!

I haven't watched Degrassi: TNG in a long time so I'm not familiar with her work.

shes amazing. if i had to compare to a daytime actress id say kristen renton i guess. i tried finding a good scene but they are all fan videos.

she plays darcy, who is a jesus freak who ends up getting drunk and being raped. shes really good.

I hope more regulars pop up on the new spinoff. Kelly wasnt my favorite. I would love to see the boys....Brandon in particular.

Tori is probably livid...i would be happy if Andrea also returned. she was much more the guidence councilor than Kelly but anyway im sure they will be good shows.
