Members Andrew
Who would you like to call the new Barbara on Days, Hogan where trying to make Kate the new crazy Barbara, but you know Barbara had not much to do before Hogan Sheffer took on writing much for her, and she wasn`t really a crazy evil woman, but Kate was soon only the only real bitch before Hogan took over, if where going to something big, Caroline or Maggie should have become the new Barbara on the show... Anyone agrees?:-...
Members stenbeck212
If anyone was going to fill Sheffer's Barbara archetype on DOOL, I thought it would be Kate.
Members MichaelGL
I can only thnk of Kate. Bonnie would have if she stayed.
Members Quent
Hogan sure did love Barbara. When he started, Babs did nothing but serve coffee and listen to original Jennifer's trivial problems. By the time he was done, she was in virtually every storyline and grabbed a Best Leading Actress nomination for portrayer Collen Zenk Pinter. Members Cheyenne
I don't know what answer you're looking for here besides Kate Roberts. No other character on DAYS is even close to Barbara. At the beginning of your post you're talking about how a character is portrayed on the show right now. But at the end you want us to think of someone who's all nice and should became a schemer. *confused*
Members brimike
Yeah, Hogan really took the Kate Roberts that already existed and just continued what was already established, whereas Barbara's character change (sort of like what's happening to Marlena now) was born out of a gradual evolution (well, not so gradual... getting your face disfigured or your husband killed for the eighty-seventh time will do that to you...). If anything, I feel like Kate's been grounded more in the last few months (e.g. the scenes in the car when Lucas said he changed his name, or when she confessed to comatose Roman that she slept with Stefano for money). Members DaysFanatic777
Hogans pulling a character change again, but this time it's Marlena who is morphing into a vengeful and angry woman. I watched Barbara before Hogan, and she was very maternal and caring. She wasn't a vindictive beast until Hogan had her flip over the Stenbeck's actions. The Stenbecks on ATWT are like the Dimeras on Days. And Barbara was the family's endless victim, much like Marlena is a victim of the Dimera's schemes. So Hogan did chose to have one female character go psycho, and it appears he has finally got his way, and it's Marlena. I would bet money that he wanted to kill John this time last year and send Marlena over the edge, but Coirday balked. Atleast it's Deidre who will pull this off. I can't think of a better actress to tackle a story like this one.
Members MichaelGL
You're right, Kate is more grounded with Hogan, than Barbara was under him on ATWT.
Members MichaelGL
As for Marlena all of a sudden going crazy, I wouldn't say it's too out character. The DiMeras have always gone after her and her family, and this time she's lost the love of her life. Marlena has gone crazy on the DiMeras before, when she tried to kill Stefano back in the 80s. Members David_Vickers
I think Kate is the perfect character to be the "Barbara Ryan of DAYS".
Members brimike
Well, to be fair, Barbara wasn't always so maternal and caring. And while she never kidnapped three women before and drugged them up in a Swiss spa, she definitely had more than her fair share of vindictive moves over the last few decades. It's not as if Barbara didn't have it in her to exact revenge. She always had a cutthroat side, and it wasn't until the late nineties that Barbara became pretty much just a housewife, and might as well have been baking cookies all day and doling out advice like she was Donna Reed. You are right that it didn't go overboard until Hogan wrote the boathouse fire though.
Members Pest Spray
I don't think Marlena's going psycho. I think she's reacting to a horrible thing that happened to her. Nothing like what I can see that Barbara was under Hogan.
Members brimike
I agree, P.S. I think it's a perfectly understandable reaction (and I've been just as guilty of it as any other post-er on here) to jump to words like "crazy" and "psycho" when we're typing because the only times we've ever seen Marlena/DH like this is during SSK and the Posession storyline. But truth be told, everything we've seen on the show has been totally human and completely grounded in sanity. She's a woman who's been pushed too far, and now she's pushing back. But she hasn't gone over the edge. I don't even think firing the gun in the church was "psycho". (If it was, half of Salem would also have that label. )
Members Pest Spray
brimike, I agree. And yes, shooting EJ was wrong, but it was understandable. This man shot her husband, put him in a coma for months, and now that same man is dead. He was the love of her life, her best friend, her rock. She's been tortured by the DiMeras and after all that happened in less than a year, her daughter decides to marry this guy, who also raped said daughter. It's a wonder she's not in a mental institution.
