Just a tibit about Friday's episode: the opening teaser and the first couple of acts was originally part of Thursday's episode. Thursday's episode ran on too long and Ed Scott decided he didn't want to cut any awesome material. So, Friday's episode includes the last couple of acts from Thursday's original episode and the first couple of acts from Friday's original episode. You'll see it happen when it's suddenly a new day in the middle of Friday's episode.

I've never heard of an EP "creating a new episode" like this before. Ed Scott is just amazing.

Oh Deidre Hall. Why must you persist on breaking my heart into a million pieces day after day by making Marlena's grief so real, so palpable and so visceral? Mind you, I am perfectly OK with handing over my heart for you to break it whenever you want to bring Emmy-caliber performances like this, but I do think if you keep this up I will have to start buying Kleenex in bulk. Just so you know.

Seriously, I can't be the only one who watched Marlena rocking in that chair in her grief and just wanted to reach out and hug her. I just can't.

Also, again REALLY impressed with what Martha brought to this and the way that Belle was trying so hard to be strong for her mom. These two are just so natural and beautiful together as mother and daughter. Too bad CryingJagSami had to show up at the end and cut off whatever beautiful thing Marlena was about to tell Belle in her profound grief as Sami was definitely not a welcome sight in that scene, although the three of them in bed together at the end was kind of cute.

BTW, I remember when the spoilers about this scene came out Kenny posed a question of whether viewers would be watching her room to see what it was like more than paying attention to Marlena's grief. While because of that post I thought about it for a second as she opened the door to her room, it didn't take Dee very long AT ALL to upstage that set, as beautiful and lush as I thought it was and as much as I loved that glorious headboard and gold sheets (were those THE Jarlena sheets?). All the details with the book open setting Marlena off and her sniffing his jacket and reaching out for John in the bed and talking about her experience counseling grief as a psychiatrist and the specificity of her sadness of never hearing John call her Doc again... oh it was just top notch all around.

I also liked Tony and Lexie reconnecting, I liked Stefano doing some reminiscing although as cool as it was seeing Marlena tell him to get out, it was kind of odd how just like yesterday when EJ was told to GET OUT of the pub the next scene had him inside the pub alone, just like when Stefano was told to GET OUT of the church the next scene had him inside the church alone. Not that I don't doubt that the DiMeras are a persistent lot but that is a continuity break for me.

I do have to blow the whistle however on quite possibly the most ridiculous moment in Salem PD history that takes place during this episode. I get that DOOL is having issues with not having the money to have multiple sets going at the same time, but I find the idea of Bo, Roman and Abe sitting in the Brady Pub for John's wake as they down beers and wear latex gloves while processing the broken taillight to be about the most ridiculous thing I can ever remember the Salem PD doing. I know that Salem lacks a courtroom set so really it wouldn't make a difference that any evidence processed in such a manner would never ever ever be inadmissible in the court of law, but this is just getting out of control. It was ridiculous enough they let Bo be the officer to question his dad when OMB was found with a dead Andre DiMera but now this...? Ugh. Everything else was so great, couldn't they have just let the police work go a day and have them all really just mourn John and not make me groan seeing them swill sips of booze between picking at pieces of evidence?

I'll probably say more tomorrow when I see the whole show, but for now that's all I've got to say other than I really was happy to see all the flashbacks we got. One thing I thought was kind of odd though was during one of the Jarlena flashbacks where they were whitewater rafting I distinctly heard them playing the Santeen theme, not the flute one they used for Santo and Colleen and also EJ and Sami last week, but a piano version of it. Probably means nothing, but just... interesting.

I really hope Ed Scott's continuing influence on the show means that Ken Corday is being forced out or that he is thinking of retiring and remaining EP in title only.

One can only hope.

One thing though that I've been wondering:

Ed Scott has a lot of friends over at Y&R in the cast (besides his wife obviously) Do you think that when it comes down to Emmy voting time, this might help the show get the extremely well deserved nominations for this week's outstanding run?

Marlena talking to Belle was just... I don't know how anyone could watch that and not cry. More than sad and angry, Marlena just looks so lost and alone. She's lost her best friend. Litterally.

We should send her our bill for all the kleenex we've bought this week ;) I just love this part of your post so much. SO. MUCH.

I wanted to become Ned from Pushing Daisies and bring John back myself to hold her. It was, like everything else this week, pure and raw emotion.

I would have been much happier to just see Sami come in, see the two of them together and without a word, they huddle together in bed and comfort each other.

Not even Edward Scott is going to get Melody Thomas Scott to vote for Deidre Hall. Isen't her hatred towards DH like legendary? Her mocking at the 1995 SOD's (when DH won, beating MTS) defiently is famous.

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
