If you became the writer of ATWT tomorrow, what do you do to the show?

It seems a lot of people are complaining about ATWT lately, so I expect some quality responses. ;)

What STORIES can bring the show back?

1. First thing I would do is take the following teens Gwen, Maddie, Casey, Will and take the focus off of them, and make them be part of an adults storyline. So that family's can be more involved in the storylines, IMO way to much airtime goes to these new characters that have only been on screen for 2 years.

2. I would bring Lucinda back into the business world and also Barbara and Lisa, and give them a great storyline using there long history's with the show.

3. I would give Luke a storyline about HIM and not Lily and Holden or about Gwen, Jade, Maddie, Will. It would be a long range story with every little detail being payed attention to much like we see with the teens we see everyday.

4. I would make sure that every show atleast has some kind of Family drama, that involves that particular family, and not just 1 character out of that family.

5. I would bring the Hughes family back to forefront and give them new storylines, again based on some history and some new stuff.

6. Also I would put a stop to all new babies being brought into Oakdale, and bring back some of the other kids that have been ignored for years.

7. I would not make sure not to listen to fanbases and write the show the way I would want it written.

8. I would give Katie a storyline that deals in her downfall, and storyline that makes her pay and understand what she does wrong, I would not let Katie have a man until she learns the meaning of life and grows up.

9. I would put Carly and Jack back together and never break them up again, I would just give them some nice family drama to deal with instead of the same break up scenes we have seen for years.

10. I would stop with all the dumb Who is going to get who next crap, I would put a stop to all future anything dealing with the woods and murder crap.

11. I would make Paul into a Stenbeck, which the return of James would help with, no more visions, I would make Paul a solid character again instead of this weak ever changing Paul we have today.

12. Just family drama, business drama, and mystery, and I don't mean copy cat teen mystery's either, real mysteries that are interesting and not just shove characters down the throat mysteries.

I could go on for hours but that is a start.

1. Paul needs to get in touch with his Stenbeck side.

2. Madam Cheri is a James plant, and James has a miraculously alive Jennifer Stewart Ryan....Emily finds out before she mysteriously disappears (for KMH's maternity leave)....throughout the summer, as Paul is acting much more Stenbeckian and maybe even teaming up with Lucinda to get revenge on Craig (or going into business with Carly) ...he gets clues, leading to him finding Emily and their daughter, bringing James back to Oakdale to cause trouble for everyone, and putting Susan and Barbara front and center.

3. Reunite CarJack

4. Get Katie away from Jack.

5. Enough Gwen.

6. Give Jade something to do. She's Rose's daughter, why hasn't she interacted with any of her mother's friends or lovers? I'd love to see Jade interact with Rose's BFF's Emily and Carly and of course Paul and Dusty.

7. Tom and Margo need a great story. I'm not sure what, but I really want them to be more front and center, and not just propping the teens.

8. I'd like to see Will be more involved with his family. In fact, when was the last time any of the Ryans shared scenes?

9. No more Ali the porn star.

10. Luke is by far the most interesting teen IMO. He needs to have his own story and a love interest.

1. Luke gets a romance. Make it real, see how his family reacts to the relationship. Don't just make the new interest some goody-goody nerd who no one objects to. Have those objections be real concerns...maybe the kid has been in trouble with the law, maybe he drinks and doesn't understand how that would affect Luke.

2. Don't even think of doing a Em/Dusty/Ali triangle. Sister-daughters sharing the same man is disgusting and overdone. End the Emawhore story, period. Send Em off to therapy for KMH's maternity leave.

3. Gwen/Will/Ali triangle...not only were Ali and Gwen sort of friends, Will had unrequited/stalkerish feelings for Ali. Will is exactly the kind of guy who'd find out Ali did porn, and not judge her for it. Gwen and Will fight, Ali's dates other guys as she realizes she's falling for Will. Babs objects, she and Susan duke it out. Babs finds out about Ali's porn past and humiliates her.

4. Rosanna returns, it's clear Carly has been with her for nearly all the time she's been on the run. Rosanna plots revenge on Craig, but she needs Carly's help. As Carly tries to rebuild her relationship with her children, it interferes with Rosanna's plans for Craig and Carly's protective/subserviant bond with Rosanna worries Jack. Jack and Carly slowly build their trust and admit they've never stopped loving each other.

5. Continue the Vienna/Henry relationship. Make them family-ish with Maddie.

6. Ro's return complicates things for Paul. With him trying to save Rosanna from bitterness, Meg falls into Craig's arms. Ro's revenge ends up hurting Meg.

7. Babs...Dusty....one night stand....and MORE. Of course, Paul objects and sets out to break them up. James offers him a solution.

1) The first thing I would do is give Luke a love story too. I would want it like my story for Bobby (portrayed by Van Hansis) in my blog. I want him to fall hard for a gay guy who only wants sex from him at first. Find them struggle and even take it as far as having a gay triangle. I would love for it to be a character tied to the show already but it wouldn't have to be. I would like the guy to be older - say 29 or 30. One of the Ward quadruplets would be wonderful. We know nothing of them so one of them being gay and out and proud would not be a problem.

2) I would get rid of characters like Vienna in favor of suring up the families on the show. There are enough families that ATWT are not all related and romances can be filled from them and not from stray characters like Vienna. I would keep Henry but maybe even put him in a romance with one of the Ward quads too.

3) With Craig in control of World Wide I would put Carly back in his story by him enticing her once again with a design career. She hates Craig now but she would take it. Secretly she would working for Lucinda to spy on Craig and get even with him. Her going back into the fashion industry would anger Barbara. She and Paul could focus back on BRO which Craig once again is trying to take over.

4) Work on a Jack/Carly reconciliation but her working for Craig would make the road rocky. In Carly fashion she would keep her real intentions with Craig secret from Jack

    • This is wonderful! Thank you for posting this! I loved the first two seasons and never got to see the final season when they cancelled the DVD release. I've been hoping this popped up on streaming but no luck. Happy I'll finally get to see how it ended!

    • In case it is of interest to anyone here, I have digital copies (computer files, mp4 etc.) of all of the episodes. And, besides having the files they are all up on my usual video hosting site, acct name: shallotpeel, channel it is in: Primetime Soaps and file names like  Flamingo Road S1E15 Hurricane Flamingo Road was a primetime soap on NBC by Lorimar Productions. 2 seasons. 1980-1982. Morgan Fairchild, Barbara Rush. Developed by Rita Lakin.
    • Arguably DAYS OF OUR LIVES has been brilliant lately & definitely was last week. But, here I am with nitpick & technicalities. This was the only misstep but it was just a stupid thing that should have been caught. Deidre Hall as Marlena has this one problematic line, "It didn't matter how many identities you had, I always knew exactly who you were, you were the man who saved my life." - Marlena, DAYS, 6-2-25 Unfortunately the flashback closest to it was when Marlena was on the phone, terrified because she thought he was Stefano. Yes, it's true that the line is not accurate. There were many times when she did not feel the way she is claiming because of whatever was going on in story with his 'retconned to hell & back' identity & origin story. Does it keep the whole week from being called excellent? Nope.

    • I decided this primetime soap deserved it's own thread as the Primetime soaps thread is very cluttered and why shouldn't NBC's Lorimar soap mot have a chance to shine? In doing a deeper dive into the second season ratings I was surprised to see that FR actually had an uptick in the ratings when NBC moved it to 9pm Tuesdays beginning March 82. I'd always assumed this move was a desperate one as NBC were running short of programming and had given up on the show, deciding to let the final episodes play out and be hammered by 3's Company  and CBS Movie. But the numbers paint a different story. In it's 10pm slot up against Hart to Hart, which regularly finished in the Top 20, FL premiered in 53rd place and placed in the 40's and 50's as the season continued. But come January 82 the numbers surged a little now moving into the 40's hitting #43 in Feb. Hart to Hart was #11 Then in March Bret Maverick was moved to 8pm with FR @9. First week 16th March FR #47 15.1/24 3's Company #3 Too Close for Comfort #5 CBS Movie #60 Not great but #2 in it's timeslot March 23 FR #44 15.6/25 3's Company #4 Too Close for Comfort #5 CBS Movie #33 So even with a stronger movie on CBS FR's numbers went up. March 30 FR #31 16.6/26 3's Company #9 Too Close for Comfort #5 CBS Movie #56 Best rating/position yet Tues April 6 pre empted Tues April 14 FR #36 16.0/26 3's Company #5 Too Close for Comfort #11 CBS Movie #59 Maintaining previous week's numbers Tues April 21 FR #33 15.6/24 3's Company #3 Too Close for Comfort #5 CBS Movie #60 Numbers down a little (reflecting general spring downturn) but best ranking of the season so far Tues April 28 FR #35 15.1/23 3's Company #9 Too Close for Comfort #6 CBS Movie #42 Tues May 4 FR #27 15.2/24 3's Company #5 Too Close for Comfort #4 CBS Movie #41 Season finale and highest position of the season. Looking at those numbers I wonder why NBC cancelled the show? They had very few hits and here was a show that was holding it's own and moving up in the rankings in a tougher timeslot. And being a serial, the storylines could continue to build the following season. And I'm sure the desirable W18-49 demo was good. Some might argue that CBS were shower weaker movies, but even so, soap viewers are pretty loyal. I guess Grant Tinker arrived at NBC and wanted a classier look but there was room for FR on the schedule. I mean, the following season Knight Rider,Powers of Matthew Star and the A Team arrived so there was still room for more populist fare. Flamingo could have stayed at 9pm-the replacement Gavilan bombed (surely FR would have done better} or moved back to 10pm. The following Jan NBC had a hit with A Team Tues 8pm. Had Flamingo followed it, it might have really taken off. As it was they tried Bare Essence, which flopped. Oh well,it was not to be...
    • Always, in every way, Cass/Wally/Felicia foundational to my viewing. And, I think if we look at the aftermath of the disastrous 90 minute show that we find too many pockets of some kind of lost time at the show plus way too much of change-ups in exec & writing leadership and of course we also reach the first time it becomes notable that NBC wants to get rid of the show so they can put a new soap they own in the timeslot.
