JER wrote out

Tony

Nicole

Jan

Sheffer wrote out

Carrie

Austin

Frankie

Patrick

Bonnie

Mimi

Lexie

Tek

(I didn't count the Stalker victims because they were never really dead)

I think Sheffer's gotten rid of way more characters than JER ever did, especially core characters like Carrie and Austin. So I don't think it's far to say JER butchered the cast when clearly Sheffer's the one with the cleaver.

It isn't fair to blame this on Hogan. Hogan isn't the one that killed the show's budget. JER and the other writer's did. They hacked up the show for years and the two writers who actually did a great job (C&B) got demoted. Plus, some characters needed to go. Days brought back too many characters under JER and there were new characters like Bonnie, Patrick, Jan, etc on top of it. The cast got bloated and, if JER lasted past last spring, I have no doubt we would've still seen the same exits because Days needed to make cuts per the new deal with NBC.

Circumstances were different. JER did not need to deal with this during his tenure so to it isn't fair in the least to put this on Hogan. JER is part of the reason Days was put in the situation it was.

I agree that you can't really blame Sheffer. Budget concerns aside, the show could not support as many big couples as it had, and it could still, in my opinion, stand to lose a few more characters. I don't blame Reilly for bloated cast size, though. From my perspective it's a problem that developed due to over-reliance on a few key couples and the stupid decision to gut the middle set (Sami's age group) to make way for an aged Belle & co. back in the late 90s/early 00s.

The only thing I can think of to fault Sheffer for is writing out the Lockharts and virtually replacing them with Willow and Jed (so far). It might have been interesting to let Mimi be in that Willow role, considering the character had a long history. But I get why it's easier to dump a family and bring in replacements instead- you avoid the whole "so-and-so is getting ruined" argument. And I hate the Lockharts so it's not really something I can get angry about.

Some of them left, and the rest it was because of budget and Hogan didn't have plans for them at the time.

As for JER, he pretty much ran out of ideas for all of them, except mabye Nicole or Rex since Zuker and Winter quit but Nicole was put on the backburner as soon as Carrie came back into the mix.

I'm not sure JER even wanted Tony there in the first place, and he was quick to destroy him and make him leave.

I think the only reason Rex left was because of Winter's contract. I could see JER writing more for him and Mimi, but he left so he just paired Shimi up.

I am almost positivte JER had nothing in mind for Cassie. She was killed soon after he started writing, and once they were revealed to be alive they hinted at that she was working for Tony but she was still put on the backburner, through Melaswan and the Castle until they escaped. We didn't even to get a final goodbye scene for her.

Again, he just ran out of ideas for Jan IMO. I would have liked to see a redemption story for the character, or for her to not be such a cartoon one-note psycho, but JER has never really done something like that so I wasn't suprised. After Shawn broke up with her Lindell was soon put on recurring and we barely ever saw her until she was fired.

Sheffer did not run out of ideas for these people. He did it yes because of the budget and due to people who were cut/quit before he came on he could not have them in his plans.

It's best most of the people left anyway. It is not Sheffer's fault that any of the characters left, but if most of them stayed I highly doubt Sheffer would have written for them anyway. And that is not necessarily a criticism of Hogan - just experience with him & experience that is now showing itself on Days.

Totally different, Rion. HS was forced to axe these characters because of the budget situation and most were surplus to requirements. Reilly's firings were "creative" decisions and he targeted actors he had personal grudges against (Ashford, Aniston, Penghlis etc) regardless of their value to the show.

Craig appeared in maybe 2 episodes under JER and wasn't even present at the Broe wedding reception. He and Nancy just vanished after the wedding. Brandon was basically Kate's prop to dangle in front of Sami. And I don't remember JER giving him any exit scene to speak of.

You could add Mickey Horton to the JER list as well. John Clarke, although he says it was retirement, was probably sickened with the storyline he got and chose to leave the show. John Ingle took over the role, but even he had get sick of playing a watered, dumbed down Mickey and left for GH as soon as they gave him the opportunity.

Brandon was not given a goodbye scene. He just disappeared after Lucas found him and Sami in bed together. Like Ponz said, Nancy and Craig also disappeared after the wedding.

    • I remember when the whole Missy Reeves controversy started in 2012.  She tweeted support of a business that had made homophobic statements. Greg Rikaart (who was on Y&R back then) publicly called her out on it, but was willing to reach out and speak with her. Article here: https://greginhollywood.com/greg-rikaart-talks-about-his-twitter-war-with-fellow-soap-star-melissa-reeves-over-anti-gay-chick-fil-a-73139 That being said, ten years later, on DAYS, in 2022, when they had they double wedding of Leo/CraigWesley and Gwen/Xander, Jack and Jennifer came to the wedding.  At that time, Missy Reeves was only intermittently available for DAYS. Jennifer was living "in Boston" and Cady McClain and Missy were each intermittently appearing as Jennifer, on the specific occasions when the show required a Jennifer to appear. Missy wasn't on contract and she could have said no. But she chose to appear as Jennifer for the gay wedding of Greg Rikaart's character.   So... I mean... I would assume they reached a détente behind-the-scenes. Missy still has her belief system but there's that.
    • That was one of the best grandslam finals.  Alcaraz comes all the way back down 2 sets to 0, and three match points in the 3rd set, to win it in a 5th set tie-break.  And the quality of play was excellent - so many great shots.  What a battle!
    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
