VARIETY Confirms Passions Cancellation

Variety Article

The Peacock has pulled the plug on "Passions." Net today will announce the cancellation of the nearly eight-year-old soap, which was known for its young-skewing supernatural storylines. Death had been anticipated in the wake of NBC's decision to expand "Today" to four hours (Daily Variety, Jan. 15).

NBC's contract for "Passions" runs until June, but since the extra hour of "Today" won't begin until the fall, it's expected the Peacock will try to extend the show through August. Net still needs to negotiate those deals with talent and producers.

Peacock was proud of "Passions," often touting its young femme numbers. Just last week, net issued a ratings release noting the sudser's No. 4 ranking among all serials among women 18-49 and its first-place tie with "Days of Our Lives" as the top sudser among women 18-34 for the first week of January.

NBC also pointed to the fact that it owns "Passions" outright, allowing it to keep any profits from the skein.

Cancellation of the skein points to the increasingly harsh economic climate for sudsers. Daytime insiders say it's likely one or two more daytime dramas could be killed by the end of the decade.

Because "Passions" is such a strong brand among young femmes, it's believed NBC will try to find a way to keep the show alive somewhere other than the network. An Internet platform is a possibility, while NBC might also talk to Disney to see if the conglom would be interested in producing a shortened version of the sudser for its successful SoapNet cabler.

Another potential home might be News Corp.'s barely breathing MyNetwork TV, which has had no luck drawing auds with its cheaply produced telenovelas.

Launched in July 1999, "Passions" was created by former "Days of Our Lives" scribe Jim Reilly, who remains exec producer and head writer. Lisa de Cazotte also serves as exec producer.

Skein was set in the town of Harmony, and at various times featured characters such as Timmy the doll-turned-human and Tabitha, the 300-year-old witch.

In the last episode in August..it will be later this same day in Harmony.

LMAO!

Reminds me of an episode of The Nanny when Fran Drescher is talking to someone about a soap or something, and the other person says they haven't seen it in twenty years. She said, "Oh, let me catch you up then! Right now, it is later the same day, and..."

Or the episode of episode of the Golden Girls when I think it was Blanche who was talking about a comic strip. Dorothy says she hasn't read it in thirty years, and Blanche says, "It's later the same day"

RionPassions, what the hell is with your love for PSN!? PSN is a failed show since it's inception! You love PSN, but u don't watch Y&R or GH?  The worst of those 2 shows are 10x better than PSN will ever be! AW should never have been cancelled for least of all PSN. And AW better not be bumped off the air on SOAPnet for PSN reruns! I guess I should be saying: To each his own, but I have to draw the line somewhere. PSN is not golden, never was golden, never will be golden. AW is golden! The true SB (NOT the crappy Sunset Beach ) is golden! The Edge Of Night is golden! That's what "golden" really means, RionPassions. Who would wanna invest in crap? Gold investments are tried & true! PSN 1999-2007. 8 years too long if u ask me.

Are people seriously holding on a GRUDGE over Another World's cancellation? Honestly.

Next I'm going to hear CAPITOL fans jumping for joy when The Bold & the Beautiful is cancelled.

I thought most of us were a mature bunch here but I'm not sure anymore...

There are a lot of people celebrating today's decision, I'm sure. I can hear it now. "Nice going, idiots... you dumped a 35-year old chestnut for a show that lasted just eight years. Brilliant."

Just playing devils' advocate here. The grudge should be against the network and not the show. I've lost too many of my favorite soaps to be pissed off about another show taking its place.

Yes, with NBC looking into other options for Passions, it's obvious that they didn't want to just abandon the show. They would've helped it creatively, if they could have. But they never fired JER. Tells me that he refused to go... and his contract protected him.

My hope is that somehow the show can continue on the Internet, sort of as a wait-and-see approach. If the fourth hour of "Today" fails, then NBC can cancel that LAME idea, bring "Passions" back to the network for television viewing and all will be right with the world. :)

And before anyone says I'm crazy, you KNOW the net had their mind made up about "Today," and by extension, "PASSIONS," for months now -- it really is VERY suspicious that the net just RECENTLY released "Passions" episodes for viewing online; putting that kind of effort out there, KNOWING they were canning the show.

there's definitely something to that.

NBC needs to make every episode of Passions available on Itunes. I am willing to download all 2000+ episodes of Passions so I can burn them to dvd and relive them over and over again for the rest of my life. Who's with me?

I agree, but they wouldn't be broadcast quality right? They'd just be high enough in resolution to play on a crappy iPod. I NEED DVD quality, damnit!

*sigh*

I always had hope that TAM would return as Kay, and now that's shot to hell.

Love, love, loved her as Kay Bennett.

Adrian Bellani (Miguel) posted on his official message board:

"Thank you all for hanging in there throughout all the rumors that have been surrounding the show the last few months. believe me it has been tough on me since i started on the show. well i would like you all to hear it from me, since you have supported me, and have been like my back bone. without you guys, i would have never made it. believe me.

NBC has canceled Passions. we officially heard it from our producers on tuesday. however the show will be on, and we will continue to tape through summer. so we all have something to look forward to. The show is also looking for other buyers that may be interested in the show. so the show might still stay on. lets not lose hope. as far as what is going to happen with the characters no one knows.

thank you all for your support, and i will always be in touch. www.adrianbellani.com will always provide you with the latest news regarding me and my career so keep checking in.

God Bless

Aw, poor Adrian. Again, I feel more for him and MarkCameronLongASSName and any others who just RECENTLY joined the show (like Charity). They've had less time to bank that money and who knows, since it might have seemed that the show was safe until 2009, the year of "Days"' renewal, they may not have banked at all! So, I have nothing but good wishes for 'em -- and all the actors and crew of course, but especially the newbies.

Poor Adrian? The man should not be an actor. He's horrendous.

King, I just meant paycheck-wise.

Frankly, any number of "Passions" actors can land good roles quickly, due to looks or talent.

Lindsay Korman Hartley: another soap

Ben Masters: another soap, Lifetime movies of the week

Kim Johnston Ulrich: another soap, Lifetime movies of the week

Mark Cameron Wystrach: gay porn, modeling

Adrian Bellani: gay porn (We could FINALLY see the Foxguel potential that was untapped), modeling

Galen Gering: modeling, directing (it's his passion), straight porn

Eva Tamargo: telenovela, soap

Emily Harper: soap, primetime work (she definitely has the look), modeling

Eric Martsolf: modeling

Liza Huber: another soap

James Hyde: straight and gay porn, modeling

Heidi Mueller: modeling, another soap

Dylan Fergus: modeling

Danica Stewart: modeling

Brook Kerr: modeling, soap, primetime

Charles Divins: modeling

Cathy Jeneen Doe: soap, primetime

Tracey Ross: soap

Rodney Van Johnson: he's had primetime work before so...primetime, or something else.

McKenzie Westmore: something. I don't feel like figuring it out right now

As you can see, it's not that hard to find non-acting jobs for this talented and/or beautiful cast. And let's not forget the other jobs they can find, outside of acting, modeling and legitimate adult films. I'm sure many of them went to college and have degrees they can use. Then there are specific trades.

Adrian Bellani has a degree in Finance. I would hope he invested wisely. He's hot, so he should be fine.

LOL @gay porn

JSF, you don't think Lindsay could land something in primetime - she lacks 'the look'?

I really don't know about Lindsay. Primetime, for whatever reason, hires "ugly" pretty actresses, like that girl who plays Jan or whatever her name is on "The Office." Then there's Maura Tierney from "ER."

EDIT: For clarification, I mean actresses who are pretty, by "girl next door" standards. It's an average but pretty look, and they do clean up nicely. They just tone down their looks to be more average.

It's like you HAVE to be "ugly" pretty to be in primetime, otherwise you won't be taken seriously. Exceptions are people like Vanessa Williams on "Ugly Betty, "but that's a niche role because it's about the modeling industry. That Katherine Heigl from "Grey's Anatomy" also seems to be the exception to the rule.

LKH is just SO stunningly gorgeous that, unless she takes off ALL her makeup, and acts less glamorous and beautiful, her looks may be her undoing.

Does she have the talent? Well that's another question. And the answer? HELL yes.

^Ah, I see.

I think Heidi Mueller has a chance to be quite successful in primetime. She has a beautiful girl-next-door look.

Me too. Heidi's a shoe-in with that toothy smile and dorky/pretty demeanor.
