Is Passions being cancelled?

Passions fans have pointed out--probably correctly--that if the show gets cancelled, JERk will refuse to wrap up storylines out of spite. However, the problem with that argument is if Passions gets renewed, JERk will still not wrap up any storylines (as has been the case for the past eight years). So, the bottom line is that JERk will never resolve Passions' storylines, regardless of whether the show stays on the air for a few more months or a few more years.

I think it takes a lot of nerve for Passions fans to be upset at NBC (for threatening to cancel the show), given the fact that the network has been completely supportive of the show from the beginning; NBC has given the soap huge amounts of promotion, a great time slot (during which NBC requires its affliates to air the show), and yearly renewals despite the terrible ratings. Note that NO OTHER LOW RATED soap on NBC has gotten anywhere near this type of treatment from the network: by contrast, those other low rated soaps were put in terrible time slots (or not even aired at all in many markets) and received zero promotion. Seriously, what more could NBC have possibly done to give Passions better treatment than it already received during the past eight years? And, shouldn't you be greatful that NBC treated Passions so much better than the network treated any other low rated soap opera?

I think it´s not good at all for DAYS. It will be hard for them to get a new audience when they are crammed between news and gameshows. The right type of audience for soaps won´t have any reason to watch NBC, unless they are specifically interested in DAYS.

I think NBC should try to air DAYS much later, around 5 or 6 pm, the same way soaps in Europa are aired. Soaps are still a very succesfull genre there because they air just when people comes back from work. And I think with DAYS as the only soap on the network, it would work for NBC too.

No comparison. Days has a solid core following, has been around for 40 years, and is getting better and better with HS in charge. Passions is a piece of trash trying to pass itself off as a legitimate soap and has only been around, and languishing at the bottom of the ratings for 8 years. Canceling Passions will not effect Days at all in my opinion. The vast majority of people that I know who watch Days, don't watch Passions, myself included.

And I saw the show last week and Spike was trying to rape Fancy ... and I tune in today after watching Monday's Days to what was probably a day-ahead Passions -> and she's STILL fighting with him?!!!

Max, you are my new hero. I totally agree with everything you said. NBC has given Reilly more chances then he deserves. If they give him another year, what makes anyone think that things will be any different? It appears that the show survived last year by the skin of their teeth and still failed to make any substancial changes. I certainly don't want anything to happen to Days because they don't deserve to be brought down because of that hack, but hopefully they can stand on their own without that dead weight attached to their neck.

NBC is having financial problems across the board and I can only conclude that with the major budget cuts Passions had to make last year that the show is no longer making them money. That's the bottom line and all the twelve-year-old demos in the world is not going to change that.

If you had rotting leftovers in your fridge that were stinking up the place would you throw them out, or would you continue to spend money on Febreze to try and hide the smell just so your fridge wouldn't look empty? I don't think so.

So I guess it's a done deal. I am terribly sad about this. Most likely we'll find out some time this week, possibly Wednesday, that Passions is indeed cancelled. Rumors have been running rampant this past week that it could go either way. I can't see the affiliates giving up another hour to keep Passions. NBC made what they consider an even exchange and Passions was sacrificed. I swear I hate this.

Exactly. Why should NBC keep Passions when it has low ratings and has an arrogant writer who seems to do whatever he pleases while the network and the fans be damned by him. NBC shouldn't be expected to keep a soap that doesn't have the kind of success that they want from it. NBC gave JER more than enough chances.

Those other soaps that NBC ended up canceling in the past had fans too who didn't want that to happen to their soaps but it did, but life goes on as it will go on for NBC and for the fans even without Passions on the air.

Looks like Passions is done! Only 8 soaps will be left. Maybe now things will be wrapped up but with Reilly I highly doubt it.

I think this is bad news for soaps if this is indeed true, especially GL. If PSNS is cancelled GL will be on the bottom 90 out of 100 times, so how long before CBS and P&G are dissatified with being in last in HH numbers and almost all demos. I feel bad for the PSNS fans if this is true.

It looks like it says Aug. 7 is the launch for the 4th hour of the Today Show. So when would Passions last air date be if true?

The Variety article mentions the Megan Mullally show being cancelled... so, I'm wondering if the cancellation of that show will indeed save Passions. The way that article put things, the network doesn't have to cancel Passions to make room -- it would just be the easiest way of doing it without pissing off local affiliates somehow.

I don't friggin' know. This confuses the hell out of me.
