Is Passions being cancelled?

I think he got carried away with dragging out the stories without a payoff. At least when he left Days, he married off Carrie and Austin in 1997, and that was well-deserved and long-awaited. Well, Theresa and Ethan have suffered way more than C&A ever did, and they are still apart! It's sad! :(

He doesn't care about the fans. Rion.

If he did, the show would be featuring new stories by now and would've given fans what they want.

Passions was the one show that held it's numbers from 2000-2005 when other soaps fell but now it's lost quite a bit (still ok in demos though) because fans only have so much patience. JER didn't exactly make things alright at Days when he left. With the exception of C&A, he left the show with a mess in several stories. If he hadn't left Days the first time, I don't think the stories that did end would've ended. They would've kept going.

I hated the stuff that JER did in his last few months on the show the first time.

Sami getting exposed was a payoff, but Carrie and Austin getting married wasn't so much. Why? By that time, Carrie was already ga-ga over Mike ahd had a look of doubt in her eyes when she said I Do. What payoff!

He also brought on Josh Taylor as Roman to break up J&M who had already been apart for like, five years or something.

He paired Vivian with Jonesy. JONESY. What a disaster.

And he had faux-Jack and faux-Jenn join a TRAVELING CIRCUS.

I think he did everything in his power to ruin Days in that last few months before he left the first time. Just to leave the next writer a big mess that the show would never recover from.

Sunset Beach wasn't canceled for Passions; Another World was. Passions never attained the ratings that Another World had at the time of its cancellation. In all fairness, I don't know what AW's ratings would be 7 1/2 years later. One thing is certain: it didn't have the right demographics.

Yeah it mentions nothing but the 4th hour. The fact that it is happening has me scared. I can't beleive NBC doesn't remember how bad Later Today was but whatever.

It mentions Martha Stewart airing in that time slot so I guess that the 4th hour is taking a slot given to syndication so syndication needs another hour given to them to replace the hour lost to Today. I wonder if there is another hourt available but the slot Passions fills?

Ugh...I just want something concrete.

Actually, I think that's wrong. If I'm not mistaken, Passions is getting higher ratings than AW did at the time of its cancellation. I might be wrong, though. Maybe I'm thinking of SuBe, which was getting like an 0.6 rating, LoL

It's going to flop. Another soap -- horrible as it may be -- is going to be sacrificed, which is going to cause a domino effect and claim Days as well (or possibly more, if Days jumps to another network)... and for what? An EXPERIMENTAL 4th hour of Today?

You can only read the same exact news script over and over and over SO MANY TIMES in four hours before people switch the channel. Damn!

This thread certainly has been a laugh and a half to read. Very entertaining folks! Especially for such a dire and not so nice topic.

I am hoping PASSIONS is not cancelled for the SOLE reason of the cancellations effect on DAYS and the soap genre on a whole. If it were simply about the merits of PASSIONS alone my response would be entirely different.

I completely agree with whoever said, Steve Frame I think, that a cancellations of PASSIONS would not be the fault of NBC but JER. HE has known for YEARS the dire straights that BOTH PASSIONS and DAYS were in in regards to renewals. He was writing for both shows so he knew very well how dicy the situations were. Clearly from what the Passions fans on her have said JER hasn't shown any inclination to save his show. He also didn't show any regard for saving DAYS. I saw how he let that show fester into a giant mess, if he did anything even close to PASSIONS it must be just horrid now.

NBC is in deep doo doo because there programming across the board just sucks. The only thing they have to brag about is Deal or No Deal. A game show that they are over exposing, making it wear out it's welcome.

After that they have The TODAY show as their only other brag peice. That's pretty sad. In Primetime they STILL have to rely on ER and Law and Order, two shows well over 10 years old, to bring in ratings, and most of their new shows fail and fail miserably.

I'm sure NBC would LOVE to have a show like Regis and Kelly that it could tout but they haven't been able to mustard up anything. NBC has to hate how The View is getting all this attention now because of Rosie. She argues with everyone and anyone and it's news fodder for days. Even on MSNBC, they can't stop promoting Rosie and The View. All they do is talk about what Rosie has said or done now. ABC must love them at MSNBC. They just make more and more people want to tune in for themselves to see who Rosie will get in a fight with next.

TODAY is ahead of the pack in ratings in early morning but isn't ABC's GMA right on their heals?

The Third hour of TODAY is nothing but fluff. I don't see how they can stretch it another hour. But I know they will. Maybe CBS will dump Katie soon and she can come back and host the 3rd and 4th hours of TODAY. LOL

I have heard that DAYS did not get a 2 year renewal or I guess, it would be called a continuation of their old contract picked up all the way through to 2009, but that they too are now on a YEAR to YEAR basis for their renewal. So if NBC were to drop DAYS when their next renewal comes up they would be off the air in March of 2008.

Because of my fondness for DAYS, out of personal greed I would wish DAYS picked up by another network. Even if it meant another soap having to leave. I know that would be bad bad bad for soaps and cause a lot of backlash for DAYS with the public and fans of another soap but selfish me would want my soap still on anyway possible.

I also with I think it was Kenny who said that DAYS is much more of a name brand that could sell than something like OLTL. In pop culture, you hear people say "Like Sands through the hourgalss..." or you just have to say Luke and Laura, or Erica Kane, but what phrase or name could be said of OLTL to make anyone, anyplace know what you are talking about? I think DAYS is a lot more marketable than alot of soaps. DAYS also has a history of fans who are very loyal and though they get mad and leave when not happy, they have shown that they are willing to come back if given a pay off. I know ABC and Corday were close to an agreement in the past when negotiations were tight so one never knows.

The only thing I can sort of see in NBC sticking with DAYS right now is that they have NOTHING else to put on daytime or primetime. Sure they could give back another hour of syndication to the affiliates, but they would be losing any chance of gaining in daytime. They are seeing shows like Regis and Kelly, and The View getting increased viewership and that is what NBC wants. That is why they are trying this insane experiment with TODAY. They are trying to compete with ABC for morning programming. If they gave up DAYS as well, they would have nothing from 11am - 8pm aside from 30 minutes of news with Brian Williams. I don't know if NBC especially in their predictiment of lousy primetime, would be able to risk losing all their daytime lineup. DAYS is doing better in the ratings, they have been keeping with 2.5-2.7 range, they haven't been dipping to the 2.3's and 2.2's in a while. Passions on the other hand keeps drownign in 1.5's! So that might let NBC say ok we'll let you show us if you can keep it up for another year, because right now they can't afford to lose everything. Isn't the whole network drowning as a whole? They haven't had a hit show since FRIENDS. They don't really have strenght to say we don't need you, we can get along fine without you and we don't need your viewers. Right now they need any loyalty they can get from fans adn cancelling both PASSIONS and DAYS together, especially DAYS would cause a backlash on their primetime programming which is in a precarious situation of it's own. So could they gamble on that and risk a few million fans from DAYS to boycott NBC

Sorry that was so long.

P.S. Hey Kenny!! Long time no See.
