San Diego to ban Wal-Mart Supercenters

Featured Replies

I mostly shop on either Target or K-Mart.

Rarely do I shop at Wal-Mart...the Wal-Mart in my area is disorganized and it really isn't going in there

Hmmph, May I ask, Do you have children? I have two and I do hate to shop with them but there are times when it absolutely impossible to "Leave your babies at home." So before you complain think about the mom that is trying to shop for groceries, maybe picking up a prescription for her babies, and getting other esstential items for the home and handling a two year old at the same time because the babysitter had an emergency or the spouse/significant other had to stay late at work. Think about that and put yourself in their position. <_<

No children, Jinkies. I don't have any, that is. Don't get me wrong, children are great. So how about this? Moms can bring their children so long as EVERY ONE OF THEM doesn't act trashy and spank them and chew them out? Honestly, whenever I go to Wal-Mart, WITHOUT FAIL, there is some woman spanking the TAR out of her child and screaming at them. It's ridiculous! So I'll amend the statement: leave your babies at home...or act like a human being and be civil.

Hmmm, well, JSF, not to burst your bubble or anything, but where I am, there are a lot of Target and K-Mart stores that I have been in, and they have congestion and howling babies/children there too...A lot of mothers just can't leave their children at home when they go out.. some may be even taking their children to get things for them.

There are about three Wal-Marts in my area, and I will be honest and say, I absolutely HATE going there. Not because of the lack of items they have, or the prices, but basically the snarky attitudes that run up and down the aisles in that store. It's not just the employees that are rude, it's the folks that shop there too; however, you can't just say Wal-Mart is the only place that has poor business ethics...There are some K-Marts and Targets that are that way too.

I don't like at all how they treat their employees; however, I look at it this way: If I need to get something, and I am near a Wal-Mart, I'll get it and move on. Same goes for any other store....I personally can get past all the "trashy mothers' and screaming babies, because they aren't hurting me and I am not bothering them.

Well, it's all about how you look at it, SweetNY. Physically, no, the mothers aren't hurting me. However, they are killing my shopping experience. As someone who disagrees with a lack of peace, tranquility and order, if there is even just a little chaos, it completely kills my state of mind. It leaves me "uncentered," if you will. I require no less than perfection in the world.

As a former Wal-Mart employee of nearly 5 1/2 years, I hate Wal-Mart!

When I started working at my local Wal-Mart seven years ago, it was a small store. In 2003 we moved into a Supercenter. For the first several years I was just a regular sales associate, working in the lawn & garden, seasonal, pets, housewares and electronic departments. Then I was promoted to Department Manager of the Pet and Seasonal departments. I left Wal-Mart two years ago.

That being said, the horrible treatment the employees receive at their stores is deplorable. Since I parted ways with them, I have not been back into any Wal-Mart to shop. I will go to any and every other retail store to shop, except Wal-Mart.

I, like Bree, cannot afford to go to very many expensive stores to shop, but I find other stores to go to that I can afford besisdes Wal-Mart.

For example, when I did my Christmas shopping last year, I went to Target, KMart, Dollar General Store, Dollar Tree, a local mall, and Lowe's. I completly bypassed Wal-Mart.

They treat you like crap and I simply got tired of it and quit. The sad part is that, the first couple years I worked there, I actually liked my job. But after a few years of being treated like crap and seeing other people being treated like crap, I hated to go to work.

Very well said and I'm glad someone else besides me experienced the hell that is the Walmart Corporation as an employer.

Dollar General is one of my biggest customers in apparel and I think that bar none they have the best prices. That store is THE store for people who don't have the luxury of shopping at D'Agostino's (for those who don't know that, its a high end grocery store in NYC)

I agree with what alot of you are saying.

JSF, I have kids, and even though one has his own family and the others are growing teenagers, back when they were to that age where I had to spank them, there weren't really that many supercenters, but their were Targets and regular Wal Marts, and sometimes I can leave them somewhere, but most of the time I can't, and I have to go there so I do. I don't ever and will not ever hire some stranger baby sitter, so I had to take my kids with me. Anyway here's how it is for me:

If you gotta spank your kid in the store, do it. I never cared what kind of store I was in, if they were just acting horrible, I would spank them because even though in general I hate spanking, and like to act civil at times I won't.

And, if there was anywhere a person is gonna spank their child, it is at a Wal Mart supercenter, because no one hardly ever hears because there are so many people.

I also hear other kids screaming as well, so I am no different.

But, kids getting spanked by me or someone else are not my major problem with those wal mart supercenters, the major one is is that there are too many people, easy to lose your merchandise, or even lose your kid. And as I said before I can NOT find decent clothes there, not for me, my kids or anyone else I ever try to.

Their food is good, but I could just go down to Target to get that. Like JSF said, everyday items I go to Target.

I liked regular Wal Marts, but they all turned into supercenters.

So way to go San Diego!

I don't mind kids at supermarkets and such.

When they're crying next to me and ruining my dining experience I get pissed.

Yes, like I said, kids aren't my major deal with Wal Mart, they only are part of it. As I said earlier, I hate Wal Mart because of the population of people that are in that store. You can't turn a corner without bumping into someone.

JSF, are you serious? You can't possibly expect perfection at a Wal-Mart! That is hilarious, thanks for the good laugh. Just ignore the babies who cry, its not like they are going to follow throughout the store. Although they could be in the check out line, which would annoy me. I don't have kids yet, but if they dare act up they will definitely get my evil look or get a spanking. I don't see anything wrong with spanking your kids in public, as long as its within reason. I don't condone abuse by any means, but sometimes kids get out of line and need a spanking. I know I am glad my parents spanked me. I don't remember ever acting up in public because I knew what would happen if I did.

The Wal-Mart near my house is always a hilarious experience. I am not trying to offend anyone and maybe its the white trash of the south but everytime I go into Wal-Mart people look almost like aliens. Most, not all look like they live underground or live in the movie The Hills Have Eyes. I can't help it, but in my mind I am cutting people down left and right when I enter Wal-Mart. And before I get griped at I don't think I am the shiznit or that I am better than anyone its just what I do when I enter a Wal-Mart.

KBT, we can agree that spanking, sometimes, may be necessary -- if it's just a light smack on the rear end. ONCE, and that's it. No, what botheres me is when these trashy mothers spank the TAR out of their children, perhaps about TEN smacks in a row, the child is screaming in terror with tears in his or her eyes and the trashy mother is dragging the child by the arm in a violent manner to make him stand up straight. IT's ridiculous and uncalled for.

Okay, could we just get back on topic? As much as I want to disagree with JSF on a certain part about that last post I really do think we should get back on topic with San Diego banning Wal Mart Supercenters.

Good. Wal-Mart blows.

They treat you like crap and I simply got tired of it and quit. The sad part is that, the first couple years I worked there, I actually liked my job. But after a few years of being treated like crap and seeing other people being treated like crap, I hated to go to work.

I worked at Target and it was a similar experience. I'm sure that Wal-Mart is worse, but retail overall sucks. I actually liked my job, for some strange reason and cried when I left (because I had to go away to school). But then, this summer I got a job at an office, and I realized how crappy things were. They don't give a damn about people...their turnover rates are so high that w/in 6 months, half the employees are all new people. Sometimes they would give me 4 hours a week (two times they actually gave me no shifts for the entire week), then the next week I'd have 30 (and I was only working part-time).

Target tried to reel me in by offering me a job as manager right after I graduated from HS. They were going to give me a $3 raise and guaranteed 40 hours a work, with 4 shifts during the daytime and only 1 in the evening, plus I was going to get 1 weekend a month off. I was thisclose to accepting their offer when I realized, "Oh, I have to go to college instead!"

So now I'm flat-broke and in debt. But it beats working in that hellhole.

I don't feel it's off topic, since trashy mothers spanking terror into their children goes hand in hand with Wal-Mart, and clearly that's one of the negative aspects of Wal-Marts, characteristics that clearly, the San Diego City Council wants to stray from. So please, offer a rebuttal. I want to know your view.

Okay then, here it goes:

I agree with that no one needs to spank a child ten times because they are not standing up straight. In fact, if your child is not standing up straight, don't even spank them at all because spanking is a process of actually hurting your child, because not standing up like your going to salute is nothing to spank for, you just kindly ask them to stop and now if after the tenth time they don't you give them a swat.

Now, if it is something really bad like they are about to knock a whole aisle down and they won't stop you can spank them a little harder. to the point where it gets their attention.

But, I disagree that spanking them like you were saying in that last post JSF makes a woman a trashy mother, because you have to spank them a few times if they are those stubborn kids that just won't stop, and that is the kind that I see most often in Wal Marts.

But, it does not make the mothers trash because I have had to spank my children a few times like that and you don't know how much it hurt me to do that, I mean, I was hurting my precious little child I gave birth to, though I knew it must have been done and I don't know how my kids or even me would have turned out if I had not spanked them.

I hate spanking in the middle of the store, and I hate hearing the children's screams when others do as well, but if you have to do it, I say do it because spanking in stores and such could very well impact on your child's life, your grandchildren's life and even your life.

But, overall, I do feel and even wish the parent should at least take their child out of the store before they spank them, just to not disrupt others, but if it's necessary I have nothing against spanking in a Wal Mart.

That's my opinion on spanking in Walmart.

How did this thread become about spanking?

I totally agree that the employees at Walmart and many huge stores look like zombies. They look like they really don't wanna be there. And I can relate because I worked at Zellers for 5 months and just hated it. I hated how people felt they could go shopping during the last 5 minutes of store hours, I hated how he we had to sign people up for HBC credit cards and if you didn't ask, your supervisor would make you feel like a bad worker, etc., etc.

It's the funniest thing: I won't work at all in retail, such as K-Mart, Target, Wal-Mart, stores of that nature, however, I love working in department type stores, boutiques....Those stores don't bother me, even when I run into an uppity person that wants no help what-so-ever.
