If you haven't already seen this over the years you probably just didn't want to, but for the time being, SNL's Youtube channel has uploaded the very first episode of the show.

Happy anniversary, SNL. A show that at times has been offensive, stupid, maybe even dangerous, but a show that, like daytime soaps, has been a formative part of my life, one always with me, with many people along the way who felt like best friends, even though I would never know them. SNL never leaves me, even when I leave it.

May your last few years on the air go out on a good note.

I've only seen a few clips of the anniversary stuff, I should watch more. I did like seeing Eddie again. I did see Jane and Laraine Newman honoring Gilda at the end, that was great.

I'm truly amazed at how Eddie Murphy and SNL were able to mend fences.  Chevy Chase's post-SNL film career has been even more notorious than Eddie's.  Yet, because Eddie wasn't on SNL at the same time as Lorne, he was made the butt of a very cruel joke (and by David Spade, of all people).  Lorne just seemed very reluctant to give Eddie credit for keeping SNL going at a time when NBC could very well have cancelled it.

Can you name all the soaps in the pictures at 4:40 in this SNL skit?

Bottom row is L to R, Luke and Laura; Bo and Hope, the original ‘84 Capwells on SB

Middle row, L to R, Julia and ?? AMC; Victor/YR; ??? (Do I see Vincent Irizarry); ???

Top row, L to R, ???; Alan, Elizabeth and Mike on GL, I think?

This one looks a little bit like Lucas from Days in the middle.  Maybe Chelsea or Mimi to the left side of pic near him, and Chloe on the right side of the pic in the off-shoulder dress.  But then who is the woman in white on far left edge? Hope? Kate?

I can't see it well, so I could be way off, LOL.  Don't even know if I have the right soap.
If anyone recognizes the set, that would help.

Furthest to the left is Brooke/Erica (AMC), and below them L&L. Then I think you have Margo and Tom (Deas and Colin era), Victor, and Bo and Hope. Then Elizabeth, Mike and Alan (GL), I think @janea4old is right about DAYS and Lucas, the Capwells, and Antonio/Gabi/Ricardo from Sunset Beach.

I have watched that sketch a few times over the years but didn't ever notice some of the more obscure images alongside the big ones. Thanks.

    • Thanks. I'm glad we have some fan memories of these years as this is such a typically snide take on the genre. It's also poorly written and reminds me a great deal of the tedious "snark" recaps that became popular in the '90s. The end in particular. The 1979/80 stuff I have seen is much more polished than a number of soaps at the time. It was very easy to watch and not too bogged down in past story.  Margo is played by Ann Williams, who was on what seemed like every soap. I think she said Margo was her favorite role.  These episodes aren't consecutive, but if you ever have time, they are worth a watch. They are bits and pieces from January and April of 1979 - April in and out of prison, her past calling to her via her psychic powers (and the suicide of Miles' wife Denise, who had murder framing in mind). April 1979 has the end of Winter Austen (such a fantastic soap name).  I don't want to drop a ton of links but you can find playlists on Youtube.
    • And the rating 'wars' continue...hehe.
    • Well, it was fun while it lasted for Rebecca Herbst. Le sigh.
    • I am wholeheartedly enjoying this show. I just haven't been able to post as much as I used to. But yes, this episode needs to be submitted for the EMMYs and there needs to be wins. I better NOT see Y&R, DAYS, or B&B winning in categories over BTG. I feel like the only show that is giving BTG an ounce of competition this season is GH.
    • I never thought the day would come, but too much MM for me.
    • I think it may be that the character was brought in for a specific purpose and then became popular with viewers, and the show didn't know how to respond.  The choice to pivot away from Simon/India may show that you are right and they didn't care for her...although pairing them up may be another sign they didn't care for her. I don't connect well with this period but it does make me happy seeing some of these characters before the great purge and some of the surprises - I'd forgotten the wonderful Maureen O'Sullivan popped up to be bumped off. So typical of soaps by this point, but it doesn't grate as much as later on when Y&R would bring on any random cast member from Small Wonder. I'm also amazed at this time at just how much money the show must have had. The costumes for the Founder's celebration in summer 1984, or whatever it was, looked gorgeous.
    • Which officially started to feel that way today with them hearing each other out as they confronted each other at the same time.    Same. He was even catching himself when he was about to go overboard or do those tics that people don't seem to like. He failed a bit at the end, but he carried. It makes me think about a month back when it was discussed that the actor was better in other things he's been in. And I questioned then if that meant that he was playing Martin more intentionally. I questioned that briefly again today because he was giving.
    • I really like the actress who plays Margo. Don't know  her name. I'm so hesitant to google anyone because I don't want to know the length they were on the show. I've watched two episodes and I have to say that the show does not feel as dated as other shows. I tried to watch Ryan's Hope a few weeks back and some of the acting was a bit rough. EON is a lot more natural which amuses me considering it's a mystery/thriller show.
