BTG: History, Behind the Scenes Articles & Photos
Beyond The Gates February 2025 Discussion Thread will go off!!! I'm sure there's been much discussion on how the show will look-daytime soapy or a more primetime feel? Will one day take several days onscreen to unfold or will there be time jumps, even within an episode? Will there be fake outside scenes or regular location work? So much to ponder...

Ratings from the 70's
Xmas week 71 saw the kids take over the TV with sitcom reruns and game shows dominating. I wonder if that was the norm in those years? I know in summer sitcom reruns would do much better than when kids were back in school. here's the schedule at that time December 20, 1971 NBC CBS ABC 10:00am Dinah's Place The Lucy Show (R) LOCAL 10:30am Concentration My Three Sons (R) 11:00am Sale of the Century Family Affair (R) 11:30am Hollywood Squares Love of Life That Girl (R) 12:00 Noon Jeopardy! Where the Heart Is Bewitched (R) 12:25pm CBS News 12:30pm The Who, What or Where Game Search for Tomorrow Password 12:55pm NBC News 1:00pm LOCAL LOCAL All My Children 1:30pm Three on a Match As the World Turns Let's Make a Deal 2:00pm Days of our Lives Love is a Many Splendored Thing The Newlywed Game 2:30pm The Doctors The Guiding Light The Dating Game 3:00pm Another World The Secret Storm General Hospital 3:30pm Bright Promise The Edge of Night One Life to Live 4:00pm Somerset Gomer Pyle, USMC (R) Love, American Style (R)

Primetime ratings from the 70's
Interesting to see only All in the Family, Sanford, MASH and Maude in the Top 20. The schedule was not sitcom heavy. It was early in the season so the networks were showing stronger titles. The Planet of the Apes movies were huge for CBS thus leading them to order a series which bombed. Night by night Sun Disney NBC Mannix/Barnaby Jones CBS Mon Gunsmoke CBS Movie NBC Tues Maude/Hawaii Five O CBS Wed Adam 12 NBC Sonny& Cher/Kojak/Cannon CBS Thurs Waltons CBS Ironside NBC Kung Fu/Streets of San Francisco ABC Fri Sanford NBC Movie CBS Sat All in Family/MASH CBS Movie NBC

No to Clifton's shirt! He is looking good, allowing for the usual touching up of pics. I agree they might be about 8 weeks ahead by premiere date. I'm sure extra production time is being allowed to bring it all together. And the taping schedule might not be the traditional 1 episode a day. Looking forward to more teasers being posted. Late Feb seems a long way away.

Primetime ratings from the 60's.
Inspired by Soapsuds posting 1965 ratings in the 70's thread, I've decided to start one for the 1960's. That may be too far back for a lot of you, but hopefully there will be some interest. Ratings collection was very different in those days and networks had to wait weeks to get a full nationwide picture of how shows were performing. Most new shows got a full season to prove themselves. Here's the numbers for the Top 40 shows Sept 29-Oct 10 1965. 1 Bonanza (NBC) 29.7 2 Andy Griffith Special* (CSB) 27.4 3 Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. (CBS) 26.0 4 Andy Griffith (CBS) 24.5 5 Get Smart* (NBC) 24.2 6 Bewitched (ABC) 24.0 7 Red Skelton (CBS) 23.9 8 Lucy Show (CBS) 23.8 9 Dick Van Dyke (CBS) 23.4 9 Shenandoah* (ABC) 23.4 11 Beverly Hillbillies (CBS) 23.1 12 Gunsmoke (CBS) 22.7 13 Green Acres* (CBS) 22.6 13 Hogan's Heroes* (CBS) 22.6 15 Man From U.N.C.L.E. (NBC) 22.5 16 Ed Sullivan (CBS) 22.3 17 Virginian (NBC) 21.6 18 Daniel Boone (NBC) 21.4 18 Thursday Night Movie* (CBS) 21.4 20 Lawrence Welk (ABC) 21.0 21 The Munsters (CBS) 20.9 22 F Troop* (ABC) 20.8 23 My Three Sons (CBS) 20.7 24 Gilligans Island (CBS) 20.6 24 Flipper (NBC) 20.6 26 I Dream of Jeannie* (NBC) 20.6 27 FBI Story* (ABC) 20.4 28 My Favorite Martian (CBS) 19.9 29 Combat (ABC) 19.8 30 Fugitive (ABC) 19.7 30 Hazel (CBS) 19.7 30 Petticoat Junction (CBS) 19.7 30 Wild Wild West* (CBS) 19.7 34 Run For Your Life* (NBC) 19.6 34 Jesse James* (ABC) 19.6 36 Laredo* (NBC) 19.5 37 Smothers Brothers* (CBS) 19.3 37 Saturday Night Movie (NBC) 19.3 37 McHales Navy (ABC) 19.3 40 Peyton Place II (ABC) 19.1 40 Sunday Movie (ABC) 19.1 *New Show. As The World Turns Discussion Thread
April 84 I think Tom King/Millee Taggart created Lucinda. Lucinda Walsh, a wealthy friend of Whit's, arrived in town with her secretary, Beverly. John, who was on a job interview, shared a plane ride from Idaho with Lucinda whom he later learned needs an operation for an aneurysm. Lucinda remembered that John had long ago comforted her when her mother was ill.

One small touch I noticed at the ranch set- the leaves on the trees outside were moving in the breeze. Can't say I've seen any noticeable change/improvement in clothing.

Primetime ratings from the 70's
@Soapsuds we don't have a 60's thread, but your post has given me the impetus to start one. I think this is Oct 65. Peyton Place and The Fugitive were the only ABC shows. Surprised that Bewitched was not there but my guess is the CBS Thursday movie was a strong title that nudged Bewitched out of the Top 20. Peyton Place was a self starter as Red Skelton on CBS #2 aired 8.30-9.30 and then viewers switched over to ABC @9.30 for the rest of the evening.

Ratings from the 70's
As The World Turns @#1. Jan 73 was a year into Irna Phillips return as headwriter. A lot of reports from that time say Irna brought the ratings down with some not well received stories so it will be interesting when we get the rest of 73 as she was fired later that year. Game shows were really having their moment. 5 of the Top 10. They would have been even cheaper than soaps to produce but I guess the demos might not have been as desirable? and viewers not as loyal?

Ratings from the 70's
@JAS0N47 Thank you! Early Xmas gift. Interesting to see How to Survive A Marriage ahead of Y&R. Y&R had been on air for almost a year but was still among the bottom soaps along with Secret Storm(about to be cancelled) and perennial also-rans Love of Life and Somerset. Meanwhile HTSAM had a choice timeslot following AW and debuted with better numbers than its' predecessor Return to Peyton Place. At the time it would seem that HTSAM would continue to build and Y&R might struggle but the opposite occurred.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
When Sara first came on I think they talked about a past college romance with Paul Fletcher, but that didn't track with his past story of being a loner till he fell for Anne Benedict. Then a decade later, when Justin was introduced, they talked of a past b/w Sara and Justin which seemed to contradict the Paul/Sara story.

Seriously, in his time there, has Josh Griffith written one captivating romance/love story? One intriguing mystery? One compelling social issue story? One fascinating business story? Could anyone honestly answer yes to any of those?

That stunt was well done. Who was that fighting with Lee? Reminds me of Ed Zimmerman's (Joe Werner)novel he wrote about a daytime soap. One of the characters was a Hollywood actor who constantly forgot his lines.I think that was based on Ray Fulmer(Lee). Another character was a lecherous older actor who played a beloved onscreen senior. I think that was based on Stefan Schnabel (Steve Jackson)

I know Nikki can be self involved but not noticing an entire house being erected and furnished over many months? Maybe the ranch is so huge it was out of sight...

Written by James Lipton and Don Wallace. GL seemed to be going through writer changes around this time. James Gentile and Robert Cenedella are also credited in 74. Nothing exists of GL from 66-77 apart from Papa Bauer's funeral in 73. Surely there are episodes around. Things keep turning up, so here's hoping. I wonder why they changed from the lighthouse credits to the blurry leaves opening?' It certainly wasn't any more contemporary.

ALL: Characters' residences
The original ranch that burned down, the next ranch that was downgraded to a never before seen living room and the new ranch introduced this week on different plot of land. Victor's first penthouse was reused as the Restless Style offices ,right? Then the second penthouse Victor/Nikki moved into when the ranch was burned down. Several characters have lived there, currently Nate's home.
