Y&R January 2022 Discussion Thread
I'm reading comments on other sites how poor Abby is being manipulated by the men around her. I hate that narrative that always gives grown women a pass for their stupid actions. Abby should have told Devon to back off when he started interfering with her family and relationship. As awful as the whole surrogate plot has been, there were issues that needed to be dealt with. Sure Devon could have feelings for Dom but that could have been addressed differently. He could start talking babies with Amanda and she could not be ready, thus creating conflict. Instead she's on board with having some kid around the house when she just moved in.

Maybe Noah could have clashed with Rey....you know, to create some conflict b/w Sharon and Rey,Sharon and Noah, Rey and Noah. Nick would have a stake in this too. Does Nick have anything to do with Chelsea, former love of his?

I don't know if you are earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a year , writer's block is justified. Many of us have come up with ideas, plot points etc off the top of our heads that could be utilized. I don't envy Griffith this job in the sense that there seems to be forces at play we aren't privy to. People are always saying Sony/CBS interference but what plots are they vetoing ? The stuff they approve that gets to air is pretty awful. The set situation is pretty dire, but doesn't make sense. A bedroom set can be set up for a 3 year old boy, a safe house in Spain that is used for a couple of episodes, an elaborate Tuscan villa ,NY apartment etc but no offices or bedrooms for regular characters. Josh needs to cut back on the business stories that don't make sense and go for more intimate stories that can be told within the budget framework.

ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
Yes he is now in real estate. He said he went into acting at a young age but since then has realized he wants to pursue something where he has more control. He said as an actor he had to always at the mercy of his employers. That seems fair enough but i don't think he can expect to not be answerable to anyone in this field unless he puts in years of hard work. Hope he doesn't expect to jump to the top within a year or so.I would imagine the Florida market is highly competitive.

YR February sweeps
Nick/faith/Sharon/Moses Nick will continue with his commitment to make family his #1 priority so he plans a father/daughter day with Faith. At CL Sharon tells Nick she's pleased to see him making that commitment. Sharon tells Faith she's lucky to have such a great dad and Faith agrees. Faith meets Nick at CL and he outlines plans. Then she gets a text from Moses saying he's headed to CL so they can hang out. Nick notices Faith's reaction but she says it's nothing. She then tells Sharon what's happened and she feels bad because she wants to spend time with her dad but also Moses. Sharon reminds Faith that her dad is really stoked about this and Faith realizes he should choose Nick. But then Nick gets a call from New Hope-there's abusiness crisis he needs to deal with but he can't let Faith down! But then Sharon confides about Moses and Nick realizes he can reshcedule Faith, so when Moses arrives, Nick tells her to spend time with her boyfriend. He's totally cool with it because he has adult business stuff to do. Faith is happy and tells Nick, he's a cool dad. She then tells Moses who agrees Nick is a cool dad. Sharon tells Nick he's done a good thing.

Just reflecting that Victor and Jack were both introduced in 1980 and grew to be two powerhouses of the show who drove story for decades. Yet in 2022, while Victor has a wife, 4 children and numerous grandchildren on the show as well as home and office sets, Jack now has no home or office set, no children or grandchildren on the canvas and only occasional appearances by his sister(s). Quite a contrast...

- Bare Essence (1982-83)
Agree. The whole thing was too rushed. As far as timeslots Tues @ 10 would have been best. Sun and Mon were movie nights, Wed, Th and Fri were soaps on other networks and that left Sat @10, which Berrengers showed as unsuitable (not enough steady viewers)- Dallas Discussion Thread
In the 1984-86 seasons, William Travilla brought glamor to the set of 'Dallas' after Lorimar Productions raised the show's wardrobe budget from $3,000 to $15,000 per episode. Until then "all the women on 'Dallas' looked middle class." Hence in order "to make these women look like rich Texan ladies they were meant to look like," viewers would see them wear "Valentino, Genny and Ungaro, and Armani" brand of fashion. "Clothes for the screen are not clothes for regular life," Bill stressed. "You have to do things to the top because the majority of the shots are from here (chest) up." During those 2 seasons, Bill supplied Lorimar Productions with 54 costumes every 7 days to dress the stars of 'Dallas' and 'Knots Landing'. Bill Travilla's efforts won him an Emmy Award in 1985. It was noted, "'Dallas' has carried the Western world through years of recession with a curious cushion – knowledge that the rich have it rough too, that there is agony with the ecstasy." Bill read all the scripts then discussed with the show's stars how they intended to play the scenes. "In designing for 'Dallas', I change the colors of the clothes to fit the mood of the star." For example, "If a woman is going to walk into the scene feeling very angry, red is the color," or "if one of the ladies from 'Dallas' tells me she is going to feel desperation, even though the script doesn't say that, I'm not going to put her in a pink or blue print. That's not desperation."- Bare Essence (1982-83)
Producer Chuck McLain told David Hinckley of 'New York Daily News' in 1983, "Some companies do try to make everything a back-door pilot but most do not. Most movies are just movies. 'Bare Essence' is an uncommon case because even before the mini-series was filmed, I thought it was a weekly series. So Warner Bros. authorized me to make a presentation on it, and even though CBS wasn't interested, since they already had 'Dallas', 'Knots Landing' and 'Falcon Crest', NBC didn't have any serials, so they were." On 'Bare Essence', Genie Francis played a 20-year-old entrepreneur who ran a high-financed cosmetics and perfume empire after saving the international corporation from bankruptcy. "It's not such a far-out possibility," Genie made the observation at the time. "After all Tyger doesn't own the company. She married into the family that controls it. Today's (in 1983) young people are taking their place in the business world. Tyger is a perfect little mogul-ess, determined, ambitious and aggressive." Genie also pointed out, "I have older advisers around me. For instance, the head of our empire is a 70-year-old person, played by John Dehner. I also have such helpers as characters played by Jessica Walter, Jennifer O’Neill and Ian McShane." D.C. Denison of 'The Boston Pheonix' noted the fate of a character would usually be dictated by a change in storyline. He gave as an example, Tyger's roommate and confidante, Kathy Bradshaw. Chuck McLain clarified, "The character of Kathy has turned out to be wrong for the story. Kathy was intended as a contemporary for Tyger, someone she could talk to. But once she was on the show, I realized that I now had 2 very similar heroines when all the attention should have been going to Tyger. So, I've had to write her out. "The first thing I considered, once I made the decision, was how I could write Kathy out to best serve what we're doing on the show. I wanted to rectify the mistake in a way that would be beneficial to Tyger and to the main storyline. I wanted to write her out at a time when Tyger was very, very vulnerable, and to use her leaving as a way to play up to that vulnerability. As it's planned now, Kathy will be written out just as a new romantic interest is entering Tyger's life. Kathy's departure, which will make Tyger feel even more alone, will work very well with this new storyline." Media monitor Joan Crosby of 'Compulog' observed, "When 'Bare Essence' began the serial focused on the lives and loves of women perfume executives, but as the season wore on, British actor Ian McShane's character, Greek shipping tycoon Niko Theophilus, became more dominant." 'Bare Essence' lasted 11 episodes. 'The A-Team' provided lead-ins for the first 3 weeks on Tuesday nights in February 1983. The network then pre-empted 'Bare Essence' for the following 2 weeks to telecast basketball. Then the next 5 episodes were shown on Friday nights after 'Falcon Crest' ended its 1982-83 season. The network then pre-empted 'Bare Essence' for the following 6 weeks due to lackluster ratings. Then the remaining 2 episodes were shown back-to-back in the non-ratings season on a Monday night in June as a movie, 'Bare Essence: The Final Chapter'. Ian McShane made the comment at the time, "Next year (1984) there will probably be a mini-series called 'The Best of Bare Essence' and 10 years from now (1993), it will be a cult series. We certainly needed better writing and more delineation of character. They would bring in characters who were confusing. Also, the network changed the time slots, so the audience felt confused and they (the network) felt we would not make it." Genie insisted, "I didn’t take the cancellation of 'Bare Essence' as a personal failure. Many of the prime-time series of that period didn’t make it either."- GH: Classic Thread
If you look at GH in the early 80's you had characters like Jeff,Anne, Peter, Diana etc who were all medical professionals written off. Very few of the major new characters introduced in that time were doctors or nurses. There was Dr Tony Jones and a return of Dr Mark Dante Meanwhile we had Holly, Felicia, Frisco, Jimmy Lee, Celia, Derek, Ginny, DL and Terry Brock etc Audrey and Jessie were reduced to guest appearances.- Soap Hoppers: The Soap Actors And Roles Thread

Well, Imani has been super busy with her new law firm- in fact, the girl has been making serious waves in the GC legal scene. And of course, settling in to her fabulous new apartment-she still gets chills thinking how lucky she was to score such a terrific space. As for dating- well, there have been a couple of guys she been seeing. One is a very successful real estate broker who was a client and the other is a tech wiz running an international business. Bit for now she's keeping it light. As for Naya, she well on the way to recovery and reconnecting with her husband. They just went on aromatic cruise together. All of this will be detailed on a Wed ep when Amanda catches up with her sister for lunch at Society. Nate will stop by and Imani will tell him he looks mighty fine in that color shirt.- Y&R January 2022 Discussion Thread
I think Marlena must still be watching on the black and white portable she used to watch Love of Life in the 70's. Beautifully produced ?- cramped, cheaply decorated sets, empty public spaces, basic staging, poor lighting, crappy music, ill fitting/gaudy costuming etc Chelsea is way past use by. She's one of those characters that should be long gone to make space for newcomers or other ignored characters to get some airtime and energize the vet characters. Mature? Billy is worse than a spoiled teen and Lily is an enabler. Well, she got that bit right.- Soap Hoppers: The Soap Actors And Roles Thread
