You mean this lol? Y&R Casting New Role A casting call has gone out for a new denizen of Genoa City, and it's described as a "fun, breakout role." The working name of the character is "Simone" and here are the details: She should be an ample-figured African-American female in her mid-30s. She will be sharp, sassy and bold, street-smart and unafraid of confrontation. She wears her emotions on her sleeve and does not suffer fools gladly. She dresses like she is going to a ball. She loves herself and knows she is "all that." The role is contract and will start around late-April. I saved it from last year’s BLM discussions.

Like I said it at least got Devon screen time. Sure Bryton has never been a strong actor but Devon and Roxy’s off screen romance and sleeping with Aunt Tyra were even more insulting and was a real dead end. Bryton only appeared in 20 episodes in 2010 as a contract player too.

I appreciate the work JW and JC did to make it work and there definitely was really compelling drama that first year and don’t forget that Ashley Bashioum returned as Mac just a mere nine months later she was absolutely wonderful as a matured Mac coming back and coming to terms with everything while focusing on the quirky crew that was Daniel and Kevin. Plus I liked the initial tale of Arthur Hendricks coming to town, the later crap about his mysterious step son and dead wife was just bad soap. I believe what irked me the most during those days was Jill always calling Katherine “oh mother!” Even if they were mother/daughter it just rang so false. I could have bought Cane as Phillip if the show had actually stuck with it. DG actually had some really nice sparks with TC and both are are very close in age it would have been nice if Cane and Nina developed a relationship as Cane sought out to learn about Phillip III, bond with Chance all the while causing conflict because Jill doesn’t want another son with Nina while Cane encouraged Chance to go after Kate/Chloe much to everyone else’s chargin. As bad as the retcons were, undoing them caused even more considerable damage. The one good thing I thought came out of it was making Devon Katherine’s grandson but only because Devon finally became relevant again after being obscured for most of 2007-2011. Jill Fenmore Atkinson who? 🙃 I don’t recall Jill and Lauren interacting at all for several years now and the closing credits nowadays always refer back to her as Jill Abbott.

First time I thought B&B was more superior that Y&R was in the fall of 1997 when B&B was on fire with Spectra vs Forrester with Grant jumping ship to Spectra and falling in love with Macy, the Lauren/Eric/Stephanie triangle, the Ridge/Taylor/Thorne/Brooke quad, and the Sheila/James/Maggie triangle and custody over Mary. Y&R was coming out of a rough transitional period and rebuilding as at the time where Danny & Phyllis and Ryan & Nina divorces were the main highlight along with Sharon connecting with Cassie. The rest was a mess although I secretly enjoyed Sarah the maid 🤣 B&B definitely later one had stronger periods like 2001-2002(B&B totally should have won Best Show for 2002 not ATWT) and the show had a stellar 2005 but After that it was a very slippery slope.

And thanks @YRfan23 didn’t mean to overstep just wanted to inject my own opinion about 2003. I still have bitterness towards Jack Smith and how a lot Y&R’s problems go back to him directly. Given how Smith was fresh off B&B with so many shocking yet inconsequential plot twists like Ridge & Morgan and Ridge is Massimo’s son he assumed Y&R would be the same with stuff like Paul rapes Christine and Katherine/Jill. Yikes. It did not work at all. Yet after Sony fired him he eventually slithered back in silence as a script writer for B&B for a number of years before retiring. A shame we have no post Y&R interview for him although I did hear his son’s passing around the time he was fired from Y&R has endlessly haunted him. And I don’t really care to hear from him via an Alan Locher interview lol.

After being stuck with Heinle and Khalil for so long now I can pinpoint what went so wrong lol. Looking back Heinle enjoyed a solid first year under decent writing as the old crew were still writing for her as if she was HT Victoria. She was was adequate in the role but since she wasn’t anything close to being a force like HT Latham, MAB etc chose to write towards more Heinle’s more alleged romantic heroine strengths in the past on other soaps and also appeased to AH’s ego. It flopped miserably all around because the reality is AH has always done better as an icy bitchy Victoria rather than some romantic heroine, and AH’s ego was punctured when after her getting David Tom dismissed she got paired with Burgess Jenkins instead. Nice guy from all accounts but so wrong for Billy. AH was embarrassed and really has had zero chemistry with Jason Thompson.

Brooke’s alcoholism story wasn’t much of a story to begin with, just a sped up version that lasted a few weeks enough for Emmy bait and sweeps. Similar to both Amber and Steffy’s pill addiction stories. The last time I remember Brooke’s alcohol is being referenced at all was about two years ago when Quinn & Thomas spiked a drink of Brooke’s to sabotage her but absolutely nothing happened afterwards lol. Kind of like earlier this year when Zoe put colon blow into Paris drink lol.

If I recall right I believe SOD named Y&R as Best Show for 1986 and I can completely agree see why from what I have seen and read. Only ATWT was on the same level both soaps were powerhouses that year. Great picks! Not speaking for YRfan23 but just agreeing with them but in own personal opinion what made 2003 great was the whole Tuvia vs Safra umbrella storyline which involved most of the cast and had significant consequences and development all the way around from Victor blackmailing Michael into doing his bidding, Ashley losing the baby, Victor & Nikki vs. Nick & Sharon, Jack & Phyllis marriage hitting the rocks over it while it Neil and Dru strengthened their relationship over it to Diane bailing out Jabot with the money she had got from Victor from their divorce years beforehand. There was certainly other intriguing storylines such as Albert Miller, the early stuff of Kevin the psycho, a 13 year old Cassie being the sanest and most reasonable Newman, Danny’s return Brittany the stripper, JT & Colleen’s blossoming relationship along with JT’s affair with Brittany’s mom. Now there was some pretty rough stuff ie the end of Diego’s story, Olivia and Brad then Olivia and Wes, Victor and Sharon and then Sharon in Denver, Christine pretending to be Kelly Simmons (yuck!) but it was watchable. Unfortunately the worst thing was Jill & Katherine becoming mother and daughter. While it made for juicy drama at the time it was also nonsensical. Losing Heather Tom at the end of the year was irresponsible. And I don’t think killing off baby Robert was a good idea either as it was excessive in retrospect. Having Robert struggle in the NICU for a month or so with the Abotts worried about him either dying or facing future disability while Ashley going into catatonic shock for a few months would have been just been effective as crazy Ashley and the blanket. It’s sad because in a perfect world JT & Colleen should still be on this show, Billy & Mac should still be together with Mac being the actual mother of Johnny and Katie. Victoria could easily have reunited with Cole and or met either Prentiss Brooks or some sexy hot shot executive type. Maybe an Ashland Locke type under different writers? And in the end Victor sees Cassie as his true successor for Newman Enterprises.

That’s a pretty great assessment. I remember a few years back when the show was without Steffy and Hope so Thudley felt the need to make Ally and Ivy them instead and it bombed big time lol. I think having Deacon, Sheila, and Taylor in the mix is actually to drive new developments and help structure the show better. At least we get multiple stories out of it and something finally different for all the characters but I also know the recent momentum will collapse by February sweeps lol. LOL $Bill, Shauna, Wyatt and Flo are DOA at the moment. Pretty sure Bowden is off contract too and none of them are missed.

I think it was that Tropical Temptation Island story where the Last Blast crew became really, really dumbed and as a result suffered for years after that. The Jan paternity mess and Phillip/Cynthia(who I liked) videotapes were just the start of a barrage of bad plots.

Cook was decent for me in small doses but then I got to a point in 2005/2006 I found his acting loud & atrocious and his appearance greasy and unkempt. Beemer was a much welcomed replacement for me. I always found BB sexier and like he’s more subdued (where Cook was always yelling). That said adult Shawn has always been pretty dumb lol. Definitely not the clever kid Collin O’Donnell was.

For myself IMO it would have been 1993, a year that show was on firing all its cylinders in the writing department for just about every storyline.

Best Sheila story and KB performance since Christmas 1997 and that’s saying something. Also the writing for Taylor has been a refreshing surprise at least for the moment. I liked that the show is writing Taylor as both very smart and also the angle that she’s very haunted as well but trying to move. Something complex that hasn’t been seen on B&B in the last 15+ years. The Brooke/Taylor scenes were surprisingly well written for a change.

I am surprised that Carlivati didn’t have Marlena levitating above the bed as some homage given it is Christmas Eve lol. Shawn and Belle definitely deserve a better story than Jan coming out of a coma once a year to taunt them. In fact Jan deserves better too…why not have Jan go seek revenge on Mimi or something lol. I personally thought Melissa Reeves looked homely and acted bad. Not as bad as the nadir of Jennifer & Daniel Jonas, but after Cady McClain Missy’s return was kaput and lame imo.

LOL that would have been hilariously camp! I enjoyed the Season 5 2 hour premiere especially the beginning where news report misreported Fallon died and used a really bad photo of her. Definitely Team Amanda here. Even though Adam had grown on me, framing Alexis for murder is a bit much. Since this show is introducing Rita, now would be a good time for the show to introduce Dex Dexter for Alexis.

Interestingly I agree John & Marlena’s 1999 wedding would have been a great conclusion for Days back in ‘99. Speaking 1999, I think Josh & Reva’s 1999 wedding would have been a good stopping for GL if I had to pick one for the show. Not too sure about ATWT, maybe around 2003 or so with Jack & Carly’s Montana wedding? B&B should have concluded with its 5000th episode while Y&R should have ended with its 40th anniversary at the very least.

That’s actually a good starting point with Nadine first coming to Springfield and the Marah paternity and Sonni/Solita stories starting to wrap up. Hang in there because it really does get better by Spring. So true. I have read that Wilmore was really liked when he first came to GL but had some sort of mental breakdown in 1989. Anecdotes I’ve read including him throwing a chair across the set during a temper tantrum and also having stress induced vomiting episode during a lunch meeting with Zimmer and Long.

Now I do remember enjoying the Olivia vs. Nathan drama and Nate’s kidnapping at the time as well although it retrospect was a pretty irresponsible way for Nathan’s character to end. Still both Rowell and especially TLW should have won the Emmy. 1996 was an off year for all the CBS soaps. Y&R was wildly uneven, B&B was a mess (Brooke and the dolls?), ATWT imploded in a blaze like of glory, and GL’s storylines inspired righteous indignation. Thankfully at least 3 of the 4 fared much much better in 1997.
