Racism and racial representation on soaps
I was pretty disgusted with Passions handling of rape after rape and doing things out of spite just for pure shock value but I do remember the show’s main villains like Alistair and Rebecca being openly racist/sexist/homophobic etc. But I do remember it was a large stampede of disgruntled lesbians led by Simone is what killed Alistair Crane in 2006 with Kathleen Noone’s character shouting out “Thank God for the lesbians!” I remember I think it was Toups’ great assessment after JER’s passing that I will always remember that by that point it was a complicated Reilly just trying to communicate his thoughts out to the world.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
Wow I almost forgot how I did like Toni and Etta Mae on AW in its final years along with Chris, Tyrone and the last Dana. I remember liking from what I saw of Zach and Julie Ann from the SoapNet reruns but found it odd the show had them as brother & sister given what I thought was chemistry LOL. Zach(played by a younger James Pickens!) was brought on for Quinn as her last love interest before she was murdered. I wonder whatever happened to the actress who played Julie Ann. Early 80’s AW always sounds like an interesting as far as having a diverse set of characters like Quinn, Thomasina, the Todd Brothers, Roy, Henrietta, Abel & Leo etc. I wonder how much front burner airtime they actually did get. Lemay & Rauch had Linda Metcafe last as a supporting for almost a decade and was even given a love interest on screen in a cop who if I remember right died in a fire(?)

It was one of those storylines I think Belk & Co. instantly regretted as they swept it under the rug real quick and I think it was originally intended for all purposes that Lily was indeed Neil’s daughter. But it was a rape and stated on screen as such. I do remember a lot early online folks later would see Malcolm as a massive hypocrite when fighting with Neil. I don’t remember it being a big deal in the soap press it was probably overshadowed in coverage by all the sexual misdeeds that went on with Austin/Sami/Lucas/Carrie over on Days. The cold medication regrets didn’t stop the show later from Nick having sex drunk with Grace thinking it was Sharon. In fact Thudley over at B&B even gave Ridge & Brooke an even more trashier cold medication sex story in 2006.

It really was. Megan McTavish did a horrific number on GL in 1996 it was one of many trashy abhorrent storylines that aired that summer until her firing.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
Considering what all was going on the show at time it wasn’t that bad of an umbrella event although it wasn’t all that great either. As for Sharp after he left ATWT I recall another soap, I think PC hired him and hyped it up like ATWT did that they had hired him yet next thing I knew he was under SOD’s Who’s Goings section. I don’t think Monti has done anything daytime since.

Yikes I remember that too! Aside from Ben & Camille I wasn’t impressed by anything ATWT had tried in the late in the ‘90’s. I remember the show hyped it up big they hired Monti Sharpe so of course his character was a filthy creep.

That was so randomly awkward and bad but I know a few people actually thought was “groundbreaking” she said that but the character of Denise really fell apart after that and then we had that of her and Andy which could have been really interesting but ended up pretty twisted & wretched. I remember the actress had been alright on AW but this was a mess.

I was looking at old episode counts it is a testament that Bryton has survived so long as Devon. I mean Bryton was a contract player who only appeared in a total of 20 episodes in 2010, he was almost a goner.

Thanks for that. All I remember about Zach and Felicia was that some goon was after them over gambling debts. I find it interesting Colleen Dion was such a soap hopper (AW, that awful ATWT psycho role, and her two minutes on GL) and never really committed long to one soap yet acted shocked when Felicia was recast.

The Grant family was dismantled in 1996. Instead we a had a trashy triangle between Marcus/Dahlia/Sugar Hill and later the Bourdreau’s came on with not much to do. Gilly got engaged to Alan’s deviant lawyer Sid Dickerson but she broke it off after seeing Sid’s true colors as he attacked witnesses on the stand and got Alan off the hook for aiding and abetting Brent Lawerence. She then met and developed feelings with Griffith Williams, a man who had a past with her mother Vivian. Just as Gilly and Griffith were about sleep together, Vivian rushed in to reveal that Griffith was Gilly’s father! A disgusted Gilly left town to find herself. David ended up being recast a couple times, had a brief marriage and brief relationships with Bridget and Vicky Spaulding and was on and off until 2000/2001 or so. Charles Grant would occasionally still pop up as the head of Cedars through the mid-00’s.

Thanks! I knew one of Margo’s last stories was having an affair with Taylor’s ex husband and divorcing Bill Sr. How much longer was Felicia on for before Dion left for AW? She had a relationship with Taylor’s brother but they didn’t seem to be together long before they left LA together.

I tried to block out of all MAB’s attempts to get “the Black storyline up and pumping”. B&B has been even worse at such stories too. That had something decent with Lark Voorhies as Jasmine back in the day but they eventually dropped her. Maya’s story went very unnecessarily off the rails.

That was pretty bad, I was even more shocked to learn the actress was the original Dinah on GL. It definitely put an odd damper on what overall was a very memorable storyline. There was a time during Sheffer’s run were the show diversified but it also a lot inspired righteous indignation. Ben & Lien imploded, Marshall raping Jessica, Bonnie and her violent crime streak, the Zarah/Sarah mess, wasting Reál Andrews sexy doctor character and of course the above Doc Reese story. Just awful but given what else was happening on the show during that time it was the norm. Even as Margo & Jessica were horny for Doc we had Emily horny for Chris Hughes, equal suffering? Don’t even get me started on what happened to Gilly on GL either 🤢🤮

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I had never seen the first one before so I appreciate it a lot @DRW50 But yes this was a strange period for ATWT indeed, something I don’t think ATWT recovered from and why Maryland felt the need for closure for it. I assume Irma probably wrote this during her notorious second tenure. At least later on the show tried to develop Stewart Channing out of all of this it still was damaging. Melinda O’Fee’s passing reminds of reading that Mike & Charlotte reunited at one point on GL because she was pregnant with his son but apparently they(possibly Irna or the Soderbergs) had her miscarry? All so she could go toe to toe with Kit Vested(think Annie Dutton of the 70’s, heard the audio clips) Nice dismantling of the show.

Thank you @DRW50!!!! I actually do recall seeing this December 1972 ATWT episode back on the old WOST website (sans all those commercials...LMAO @ Fischer Price’s Computer toy!!!!!) like 14 years ago around this time only because we found it funny once Ronnie Talbot appeared how strange it was that the Stewart/Lowell home was like a boarding home for that time but also on how peculiar the story was...Paul was dead but news was quashed to spread along with Dan’s pitiful “THIS ARM IS MY LIFE!!!!!” Bruder looked way to young for all this mess.

WTF? After all these years? Damn that sucks. Maybe everything would be better suited on a One Drive. Oddly that does make sense as I’ve seen a lot of soaps posted without their intro included...unless you’re a cancelled P&G soap of course where one can just upload whatever they please.

I wonder what he had intended as well. Maybe Kurt was suppose to be a much darker character? McCloskey was a competent actor in the past but he didn’t seem to fit in at all on Y&R. I wonder if Bell & Co were just lost on how on to write an interesting Ashley story at a time when a subpar actress was in the role and already had one pairing already DOA.
