Got a game show. Press Your Luck for the week of June 11-15, 1984. The 2nd Michael Larson episode aired that Monday when he won $110,237.

No big change from the weeks before:

    5/28/84-6/1/84...5.4/22
    6/4/84-6/8/84...5.0/21
    6/11/84-6/15/84...5.2/21

I saw those episodes on GSN. That's the guy who memorized the PYL board and knew exactly when to hit the button!

@JAS0N47 How did the NBC shows do the week of August 1-5, 1983?  Bo and Hope were on fire on DAYS, AW had the expensive remote with the double wedding of Mac and Rachel and Sandy and Blaine, and SEARCH aired their live episode after the “infamous” and well publicized missing tape.  I would imagine the shows saw a bump in the ratings during this week.

    7/25/83-7/29/83:
    Search 3.4/12
    Days 6.4/20
    AW 6.2/21

    8/1/83-8/5/83:
    Search 3.5/13
    Days 6.3/20
    AW 5.7/19

No bump. Search had .1 higher rating from the previous week. Days & AW dropped from the previous week.

The first week of July in 1987 is the closet Marland's ATWT came to overthrow YR for #1. ATWT would hit #2 again but not as close numbers wise.

.9 rating difference the first week of July, but the week I just posted (last week of July 1987) ATWT was closer....just a .7 rating difference below YR.

Yes. They can and will. The SAG-AFTRA (TV/Theatrical) strike does not impact Net Code shows due to separate contracts.

Here's an added question about this. Since SAG-AFTRA actors are prohibited from discussing their present OR past shows in interviews, does that mean, for example, during the strike Jackee Harry can ONLY discuss Days (or AW) when being interviewed by the press? I would think she would be barred from discussing her primetime career since that is part of the regular SAG-AFTRA contract, so that should apply to her like it does for everyone else.

Just gonna throw this out there (but it's actually for the 1990's)... would you happen to have available the Saturday morning pre-teen/teen shows of Saved By the Bell, California Dreams etc. in the 90's?  I'd be interested in seeing what kind of numbers those shows actually pulled in, especially considering they tried a short-lived primetime spinoff of SBTB ("The College Years") in 1993.

Sorry, just July 1979-September 1987 at the moment.

Thank you! Definitely the one I've been waiting for. After all these years, to see that the shows were preempted by... Card Sharks?!? Price is Right?! 25,000 Pyramid?! I get it, it's easier to broadcast that stuff when the hearings keep interrupting things, but it's so not what I ever expected!

They probably decided to do that since those shows would have only aired in the Eastern & Central time zones. The hearings were on from 2-5PM, so that would have preempted both YR & BB in the Mountain & Pacific time zones, where the hearings were aired from 11AM-2PM.

That's so incredible!! :D This info that haunted most of us for years and now we know most of it!! You are a true gift from heaven my friend!!

I hope you will be able to get the week of July 6-10, 1987 at some point! :D

I have everything from July 1979-September 1987 except for 1 week in 1981, so it's all there now in my files. I had a little time to figure these two weeks out, so I posted it tonight. The rest of the weekly info will be coming!

  7. The Nielsen data below now confirms all of the Iran Contra Hearings preemptions for the weeks of 7/13/87 and 7/20/87. Now we know why I never had any preemptions listed for "Days."  Only "Days" and AMC were untouched by the hearings, since they were usually on a lunch break from 1PM-2PM.

In order to make the chart read-able, I had to split the YR preemption data into a second line.

    Thank You!

What was the ranking for ATWT for those two weeks?

They don't provide the ranking. I don't have time to look through all the soaps and figure it out, so once I compile that week's ratings, they get sorted in the Excel chart by rating, which creates the ranking, and gets posted here.

I'm curious for Tom and Margo marriage that's why I added it.

Tom Hughes Marries Margo Montgomery. (June 1, 1983)
Steve Andropolous Marries Betsy Stewart. (May 31, 1984)

    Pretty similar for both weeks:

Tom Hughes Marries Margo Montgomery. (June 1, 1983)
    Week of 5/30/83-6/3/83: ATWT 7.8/25; 6,500,000

Steve Andropolous Marries Betsy Stewart. (May 31, 1984)
    Week of 5/28/84-6/1/84; ATWT 7.8/26; 6,540,000

I also doubt ATWT attained "20 Million viewers" for that wedding episode.

The numbers just don't add up.

What is the date of the wedding you are referring to? I don't have daily episode data, but can get you the weekly average of viewers.

You're the best, Jason. When you get to June, 1984, it will be great to finally put to rest the misbelief that Guiding Light hit #1. Yes, it beat GH for 3 weeks, but Y&R was #1 and AMC was #2 during those weeks.

I just skimmed through all the June 1984 weeks, and yes, you are correct. GL was never # 1 in June 1984.

Per @JAS0N47's fb page for Days of Our Lives...

KETTY LESTER, WHO PLAYED HELEN GRANT ON "DAYS" FROM 1975-1977, MADE HER FIRST ACTING APPEARANCE IN 25 YEARS THIS WEEK ON "THE WONDER YEARS"...

Ketty Lester, who played Helen Grant (the mother of Valerie; grandmother of Eli) on "Days of Our Lives" from 1975-1977, made her first acting appearance, per IMDB, since 1998 when she appeared on this week's episode of "The Wonder Years." The left photo is Lester during her time on "Days" and the right photo is her guest appearance on "The Wonder Years."

Thank you @JAS0N47 for posting this, I missed the credits and was so thrilled to read this! It's been popular in my group on fb as well.

She was the best part of the episode, and Patti LaBelle was in it, too.

    You're welcome!

I found it funny that Richard Gant was listed as "Special Guest Star", yet Patti LaBelle was only listed as a regular guest star!  Always fun to read the credits.

  13. DAYTIME RATINGS FANS, THE ANNOUNCEMENT YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!

I can now confirm that the weekly daytime Nielsens (and corresponding preemption data) for EVERY WEEK will be available for the time frame of July 1979-September 1987 (except for one pesky week in August 1981).

Updates on the remaining weeks needed (October 1987-August 1989) will be posted when available.

Please be patient though. This is a ton of data to go through and type up the weekly lists, but know that they will be coming!

Variety reported daytime ratings for week ending March 7 1980

What is interesting is that the afternoon speciais were included, which I have never seen reported before . They were shown over a number of years pre-empting the 4pm shows. I always wondered how they did and if they were shown mainly for good PR. Anyway, this week shows that they did score excellent numbers although not the desirable demos that advertisers wanted.

    1. ABC Afternoon Special 'What Are Friends For?'

    2. GH

    3. NBC Special Treat ?

    4. AMC

    5. OLTL

    6. GL

    7. Y&R

    8. CBS Library Special ?

    9. AW

    10. ATWT

When things slow down, I can find any specials that you want the ratings for.

    Here are that week's list:

    Daytime Specials: Week of 3/3/80-3/7/80:

ABC Afterschool Special 430-530PM Wednesday 10.5/26
NBC Special Treat 4-5PM Tuesday 9.3/24
    CBS Library 4-5PM Tuesday 7.9/22
    CBS Magazine 10-1054AM Thursday 3.1/15

I wonder what those 5 minute preemptions for GH and Y&R were about. Not a political ad since the election was over by then.

When it's in the middle of a show, it's most likely a special report. Nielsen's titles for them are this:

ABC Special Report 307-312PM. (Sustaining, no rating)

CBS News Special Report 129-134PM. (Sustaining, no rating)

  17. A RECORD FOR PREEMPTIONS??

On 10/5/79, the 90-minute Another World was preempted by 3 different shows! Password Plus (230-3), NLCS Playoff (3-330, which I guess started in a rain delay), because then a 20-minute Card Sharks aired from 330-350, and then the NLCS Playoff returned at 350. I've seen soaps preempted by two different shows, but this is the first time I can remember seeing 3!

Thanks for the wonderful information you provide.

    One other premiere date:

    Loving       6/26/1983

Thanks for the other change and you're welcome!

I'm quite happy that the "Days" ratings project I've been wanting to complete for all these years is finally getting started AND that it provides fans of ALL soaps the ratings data they want, as well as confirmation of the preemption data for all soaps as well!
