Did the actors receive anything for overseas sales? Probably a check for $1.29.

Yes, much more than that. The 1991 "Days" contract I was sent by a U/5 had these as the AFTRA minimums for 1991. So these were just the rates that U/5s got. Principal actors would have gotten much more:

That's not bad for B&B! Thanks.

Just typed up the first-ever partial preemption for BB:

    4/6/87-4/10/87 Bold and the Beautiful CBS 5.4 20 197 94 Tuesday episode- 130-149 & 157-2PM (22 minutes)

Maybe I'm naive but I'm honestly shocked that the soaps do so much better than an almighty sacred sports event! I always thought those events were so popular that they had to preempt our silly soaps so they could get the ratings for sports. Maybe March Madness and Thanksgiving football do better. Or maybe it is just that the network signs a contract for broadcast rights to sports so they preempt the soaps. And as far as I know, most sports have less commercials than scripted series so it seems like they lose money between paying for the rights, less commercials, and lower ratings?

It's fascinating to see it all come together.

Here are the ratings for all of the Thanksgiving Week 1982 specials:
    CBS Afternoon Playhouse...Friday 11AM-12PM...8.1/26
    CBS Library...Thursday 5-6PM...2.1/6
    CBS NFL Football Pregame...Thursday 12-1230PM...12.9/32
    CBS NFL Football...Thursday 1230-336PM...20.2/53
    CBS NFL Football Postgame...Thursday 336-4PM...13.6/37
    CBS Famous Classic Tales...Thursday 4-5PM...2.8/8
    CBS Famous Classic Tales...Friday 10-11AM...4.9/18
    NBC Macy's Thanksgiving Parade...Thursday 9AM-12PM...16.3/40
    ABC NCAA Football...Friday 12-330PM...12.1/34
    CBS NCAA Football Pregame...Friday 230-242PM...6.1/16
    CBS NCAA Footballl...Friday 242-611PM...13.0/31
    NBC NFL '82 Pregame...Thursday 330-4PM...6.5/18
    NBC NFL Football...Thursday 4-733PM...18.5/47

Thanks @JAS0N47 that's a relief! If September 10 hasn't been a preemption it would have messed up all the assumed episode numbers. :D Totally understandable to make a mistake every once in a while.

I just happened to be typing up the week of 3/23/87 today, so here are the first week of BB's ratings:

    3/23/87-3/27/87    Bold and the Beautiful    CBS    5.6    20    197    94

Great! That tracks with what I thought.

If I'm reading correctly, the ratings for US Open are in the 3s and 4s, lower than even Capitol?! Then what is the point of preempting the soaps...

Yes, the overall ratings for them are:

US Open Monday rating is 3.5/10
US Open Friday rating is 3.7/15

Oh your fine!! :D I’m so glad it’s all cleared up, You have been so amazing posting all of these charts!

Thanks!  You see, the Nielsen books never mention the word "preemption."  That's just something I have to figure out from the charts & other data. The Nielsen books also don't do any rankings. So. all of the preemption data & rankings have to be figured out from the data the books do provide. But it's a fun puzzle to piece together!!

The rest of 1982 I see only two more CBS preemptions, on Thanksgiving and day after Thanksgiving.

When there's a "tie" in the ratings (such as 9/24/1982) when Guiding Light and The Young & the Restless both have a 7.7, I'm inclined to think the one with the higher "share" (Y&R's 31 share versus GL's 27 share) should be listed first.  If both shows are tied in households and in shares, then I think they should be alphabetized.

That's just my two cents, and I'm not complaining.  I'm thrilled to have the weekly data, and I appreciate the work you put into these!  😉

I'm glad you're not complaining, since this is a lot of work to do!! 52 weeks x 10 years = 520 charts!

My first sort is by rating, the secondary sort is by program title, so any programs tied in ratings will be listed alphabetically, not by share.

Unless the info is incorrect or there’s another preemption coming up between the rest of September-December we didn’t know about,  that messes things up a bit 😕 we long assumed 1982 was   the first year they preempted the Friday in September for tennis as well.

That was me. I think the error happened because the chart said ABC soaps aired TU-F and CBS soaps aired TU-TH. I probably just mistakenly read it as TU-F for CBS. So, as we know from earlier this week when I misread a 6 for an 8, that mistakes will happen, but I always do try my best. I would hope my accuracy would still be in the 98 to 99 percent range when I have completed all 520 weeks for 1980-1989!   I have posted the corrected chart above.

Here's the chart where I just misread TU-TH as TU-F...

Summers and other school breaks. My mom kept me up to date. Then when I graduated (I started college later) I lived just a few blocks from work, so could come home for lunch to watch when I wanted.  Eventually bought a radio that played tv stations and could listen that way until vcrs were affordable.  The things we soap viewers had to go through to watch our shows, lol.

Were you "sick" for the Doug/Julie wedding on 10/1/76 or did you have to miss it for school??

The ratings seem to be generally slipping (for some more, for some to a lesser extent), so I was wondering if the rise of the sale of VCRs is attributing to this. I thought maybe 1982 would be too early for this, but I found a chart. So I guess VCR sales will really explode in 1985.

When did VCR become popular? - Quora

The Nielsen books start listing VCR percentages at some point in 1988 or 1989.

Now that we have seen how The Doctoes and Search for Tomorrow performed after SFT switch to NBC , could I request the numbers for Password Plus at 12pm on NBC before it was replaced by The Doctors for comparison.

At the time NBC claimed that Search and TD moving would improve their ratings in the timeslots.

Password Plus 1981-1982 TV Season ratings (as of 3/26/82):

103 telecasts (the final week it aired it only had 142 affiliates/73 percent coverage)

    3.4 rating
    13 share
    2,770,000 viewers

Is that good, or did you need the demos for it too?

Wow! What happened that caused this huge jump for Y&R in week of 19 April?? 😮

Nothing. That was me seeing it as 8.9 on the Fast National page. When I noticed your message, I looked at the page again and it actually says 6.9. The Fast National weeks are sometimes a little harder to read, and I don't always do a double-check of them because they are different than the usual 2-weeks-per-issue issues, which are listed by time period (just the like the order I have them listed on the charts I type up), as opposed to the Fast Nationals, which are only listed alphabetically.

So, if you ever notice something weird like that, please point it out. I've done my best to put the accurate numbers each week. I double check the 2-weeks-per-issue issues, so there's much less of a chance I have anything wrong in those. So the ones to be on the lookout would be random jumps in the Fast National weeks. I have replaced the wrong chart above and issued the correct one, with YR at 6.9 for that week:

You are a rock star Jason!  Very interesting to see Search for Tomorrow's final rating from CBS and first week on NBC.  I wonder what CBS thought of Capital's ratings?  Falling fast!

It would also be interesting to see the same scenario for The Edge of Night's last week on CBS November 29, 1975 and first week on ABC December 6, 1975.   By any chance can you go back that far?

1978-1989 at the moment. 1977 coming next. Probably next year will be the earlier years of the 1970's, so you need patience until 2024!
