Today was one of my random days to note all the full writing credits & see if there's been any change. Today Henry Newman was not listed. You probably already know that.

Fri., 7-28 Henry Newman back, today's script writer

Henry Newman is a freelance writer. He is not a full-time writer on the show, so his name only appears in the credits when he writes the episode.

  2. FROM THE VAULT: WEEKLY DAYTIME NIELSEN RATINGS: WEEKS OF 1/12/81-1/16/81 & 1/19/81-1/23/81:

I just saw the 7/25/88 numbers. Nice to finally see "Days" at # 1 for once. Hooray!  Still hasn't happened since I started watching the show in 1990, but I finally got to see the full chart for the week. They just beat YR by 1/10th of a point. Phew!

  3. MAJOR UPDATE ON DAYTIME RATINGS...

Another big update for Nielsen ratings fans...I can now confirm that all but 10 weeks (for the time being) will be available for November 1987-September 1989. This time frame bridges perfectly into when the weekly charts started being published in Soap Opera Weekly, which are already available online. There are also 3 weeks that will still be missing from October 1989-January 1990.

So, with this update, daytime fans will now have access to ALL weekly Nielsen data from July 1979-Present except for 14 weeks (1 from 1981, 7 from 1987, 5 from 1989, 1 from 1990).
  4. Thanks for everyone's patience! I know some of you have been waiting for this info for quite awhile. Today's sorting & cropping went very well today and looks like I will have through 1984 completed soon. Unless I have a really busy day, you should probably expect a chart to be posted each day now, so lots of ratings coming for 1981-1984!

For now, we pick up where we left off 3 weeks ago, with the week of 12/8/80.

FROM THE VAULT: WEEKLY DAYTIME NIELSEN RATINGS: WEEKS OF 12/8/80-12/12/80 & 12/15/80-12/19/80:

  5. Had some unexpected extra time to start finishing up the charts from the 1980-1984 time frame. The final sorting & cropping of mid-1982 to 1984 is in progress, which should not take long at all. At that point, the charts will be completed and ready for publishing. So look for the chart posts to resume this week!

BTW, I read speculation that the "haircut" story is attributed to Brandon Beemer.  Which would make sense given that he's been on recurring and may have gotten a haircut outside of production between episodes without seeking approval.  His hair notably changed between Bo's shooting and Shawn's return to Salem.  Also, on his social media, he is currently vacationing on Cote De'Azure while the rest of the cast has returned from hiatus.  And, given the speculation about his co-star Martha wiping her socials of mentions of DAYS, it all fits.

He recurred from 2017-2020, but Brandon Beemer has been on contract since the episode which aired on 12/22/20, so at the time of Bo's shooting, he was on contract.

The Biskitts was CBS's attempt at a Smurfs clone involving puppies/dogs. It was removed in January, and I'd say losing to 2 shows composed of reruns didn't help its cause.

    As of 12/17/83
    Biskitts...14 Telecasts, 3.2/22

    Demos:

    Total: 1497
    Lady of House: 142
    Working Woman: 38
    Total Women: 173
    18-34: 87
    18-49: 127
    25-54: 95
    35-64: 57
    55+: 41
    Total Men: 160
    18-34: 91
    18-49: 124
    25-54: 114
    35-64: 56
    55+: 30
    Total Teens (12-17): 157
    Teen Girls: 77

Your wish is my command. The Biskitts, Saturday December 10, 1983.

I don't know The Biskitts, but they lost the time slot to the two more long-running cartoons, Scooby Doo and Flintstones.

    12/10/83:

    8-830AM:
    Best of Scooby Doo...ABC...4.0/22
    Flintstone Funnies...NBC...3.6/24
    Biskitts...CBS...3.0/20

    ATWT still doing well.

When you have a chance I'm curious what the ratings were for the weeks of February 27-March 2 and March 5-9.

    Thanks!!

I assume you mean 1984?  These two weeks are from two different books, so they wouldn't normally be on the same chart that I post, but I'll do it this time.

As a reminder, the weekly charts will be coming over the course of the next few months, so (to everyone) please try to limit ratings questions to non-soaps, mainly if you have questions about other daytime shows or Saturday morning shows from 1980-1987.

    Thanks Jason.

Can I ask about the week of Jan 3 1983 when NBC debuted a new morning lineup

    10 am Facts of Life

    10.30 Sale of the Century

    11.00 Wheel of Fortune

    11.30 Hit Man

    12.00 Just Men

How did the shows fare compared to CBS and ABC competition?

Also in comparison to the previous week when NBC aired Texas and The Doctors at 11 am and 12 midday.

Dear @JAS0N47, do you have a list with GL preemptions from 1980-1987?
Would be so kind, to get more information about these years. Especially because these years have some gaps in my list. I have seen your posts about 1980 on all soaps

Those will be coming once I finish compiling the weekly charts. It takes time to do each one. First you have to type out the ratings, then go to another section to get the preemption dates. Then go to another section and figure out what preempted the show. So, while I can't do that list today, you will soon have the weekly charts listing the preemption data for all the soaps from 1980-1987. Those will be ready to be posted sometime later this year. So your gaps will be filled before 2023 ends!

I'm sure that the cost of Chips reruns was a lot less than a daily 60 min soap but the demos were probably too skewed towards kids/teen males etc so NBC was not making the $$$ in advertising.

Full Demos aren't listed much in summer, and no seasonal averages for them either in summer.

But here are the last Full Demos (a 2-week average for the weeks of 7/12/82 & 7/19/82):

    Chips M-F:

    Total Persons: 1500

    Lady of House: 459
    Working Woman: 85
    Total Women: 559
    18-34: 184
    18-49: 304
    25-54: 228
    35-64: 239
    55+: 246

    Total Men: 291
    18-34: 135
    18-49: 149
    25-54: 104
    35-64: 86
    55+: 124

    Total Teens (12-17): 320

@JAS0N47 when you have the time, would you be able to post some ratings for Chips when it aired at 3pm up against GH and GL?

I have always been curious as to how that worked out for NBC.

That was April - Sept 82.

    Thanks.

Sure, Will check now. I have some time this week & next week, so this would be the weeks to ask about stuff. Will be pretty busy again as we head into August.

Work is being done at times on the weekly charts, so ratings fans, fear not!  At the moment, I want to mainly get all of the charts from 1981-1987 typed up. It's easier if I don't sort them/crop them after I do each one, so I will probably wait until they are all typed up before I go back and start sorting/cropping them, but that process is much quicker than typing them up. I already have a lot of 1982-1984 typed up, so the charts will be coming. Just have to be a little patient.

In the meantime, if you have any non-soap questions about daytime (game shows, sitcom reruns, etc...) or Saturday morning shows from 1980-1987, let me know.

    That must be the case.

Wonder why no shows were carried 100%? I remember a SOD article that stated that Days now had total clearance ie airing on all NBC stations. Not sure when that was. Maybe late 80's?

Also puzzled as to why the no. of stations changed by 1 or 2 week to wek?

More puzzling is why the percentage changes too. Sometimes I'll notice a show is listed as being, for example, on 170 affiliates, 70 percent clearance. The next week it is on 171 affiliates, but only 69 percent clearance.

Very hard to understand why that would be!
