    June 20, 1986 Y&R Brad/Traci wedding.

What was happening on Days to get to 3rd? Days hadn't been 3rd since Bo/Hope wedding I believe.

6/9/86-6/13/86: Frightened of Roman, who threw a temper tantrum, Carrie ran into the street and was struck down by a speeding car. Kimberly was relieved when Victor dropped his custody suit over Andrew. Bo and Hope moved into Victor's mansion and Bo allowed Victor to try to be a father to him in exchange for Victor's promise that he would stop harassing the Brady clan. Kimberly was surprised when Shane said he wants to marry her before she and Andrew move in with him. The mystery man kept tabs on Eugene, whose attempts to build a time machine have so far been a bomb. Robin and Mike shared kisses over a romantic dinner. Jennifer tried to help her friend Matt, who is hooked on drugs. Lars secretly contacted Britta. Liz dropped her lawsuit against Pete because she feels Savannah's to blame for Tod's death. Emma continued working on her baby adoption plot. Chris smooched with Savannah. Shawn is feuding with Bo.

6/16/86-6/20/86: Marlena fell off a ledge after saving Jennifer's drugged boyfriend Matt from committing suicide. Savannah began undermining Liz and Neil's marriage. Emma plotted the kidnap and sale of Kimberly's baby. Bo accepted a job as manager of one of Victor's companies. Victor ordered Patch to secretly keep an eye on Bo. Patch, who's smitten with Kayla, found it difficult to follow Emma's orders to terrorize Kayla. Roman worked hard to gain Carrie's confidence as she recovered after being hit by a car. Shawn and Caroline reconciled. Shane and Bo are pretending to be on the outs to get inside info on Victor. Hope is angry over Bo's sudden devotion to Victor. Lars and Melissa are developing a friendship. Mike was jealous of newcomer, Mitch, who's taken a shine to Robin.

6/23/86-6/27/86: Disguised as a nurse, Emma kidnapped Andrew from the hospital nursery. Neil operated on Marlena, who suffered from head injuries from her fall off the window ledge. Suspecting that she might be pregnant, Hope wouldn't agree to pose as Shane's childless wife as part of his scheme to see if a baby seller has Andrew. Roman rejoined the police force. Mike and Mitch, who has the approval of Robin's father, vied for Robin's attention. Shane reluctantly agreed to let Kimberly pose as his wife when he questions adoption agencies in hopes of finding Andrew. Hope was furious at Bo, who refused to help Shane look for Andrew because Bo suspects that Victor might be behind the kidnapping. Bo is sure that Victor can lead him to Andrew. Melissa is confused by her growing feelings for Lars. Savannah continued her plot to get revenge against Liz. Roman fretted that Marlena might die.

@JAS0N47 If possible, would you be able to post the demos for GL for the weeks of 12/16-20/1985 and 12/30/1985 - 1/3/1986. The week between Christmas and NYE give all the soaps a real boost each year and I'm curious to see who is making up these numbers. GL in particular tends to perform really well, even this year when its numbers have been mediocre in the weeks leading up to.

They only ever show the average of the two-week books, so here are the GL demos (2-week averages) for the weeks of 12/9/85-12/13/85 & 12/16/85-12/20/85 and 12/30/85-1/3/86 & 1/6/86-1/10/86:

  3. NBC is reporting the major holdup on a contract is about AI:

"Hollywood writers and producers have made "major progress" in negotiations to end the strike that has gone on for 145 days, but a major sticking point has been language over the use of artificial intelligence, two sources familiar with the negotiations said Saturday."

    Thanks for the updates.

So, since soap actors aren't part of the strike, does that mean as soon as the WGA deal is ratified, the striking DAYS writers immediately return?

Sorry to ask you more questions, but were there any DAYS writers who didn't return after a writers' strike?

Things look to be less finalized than the earlier reports tonight. Now they issued a joint statement saying negotiations will continue tomorrow (Sunday). But if things go well, and the strike ends, I think I read it usually takes a week or so after that for the membership to ratify a new contract, so my guess is if things are done tomorrow, then the Days writers (and all other writers) would go back to work around Monday, October 2. So October 2 would probably be the day that the late-night talk shows return, and I don't know how quickly they can write an SNL episode, but perhaps they could be back with a season premiere on Saturday, October 7. Although maybe it takes them longer and they can't be back until November?  I also don't know if SNL falls into a SAG-AFTRA contract like the soaps do, so I'm not sure if the SNL actors are on strike (or not on strike like the soap actors are).

Writers can't be fired during a strike, but you are correct, Days fired its head writer (Hogan Sheffer) and I think a majority of the other writers (I don't have time to check the database) the day the strike ended in 2008.

Days already has three writers leaving: Carolyn & Richard Culliton retired days before the strike ended and Jamey Giddens has moved on (but has tweeted he still technically is under his Days contract, which is on "pause" during the strike, so they could technically still have him return and fulfill his contract and write another episode or two). Also, I don't know what Sonja Alarr's plans are now that her husband was fired. So, whatever happens, Days will have a lot of new writers coming when the strike ends.

UPDATED: You had me interested in checking, so I checked, and Days fired Hogan Sheffer, Meg Kelly, Tom Casiello, Charlotte Gibson, Frederick Johnson, Gordon Rayfield, Judy Tate, Richard Backus, Mike Cohen and Judith Donato as soon as the strike was over, so that was pretty much the entire writing staff. But they were fired after the strike ended, not during the strike, so I guess that's technically allowed, although probably not the best PR move.

Those February dates for Y&R had long been incorrect on various sites because of the two unplanned preemptions, and now thanks to @JAS0N47 we finally have them confirmed! All of the imdb recaps after 1/28 are off.

Just out of curiosity, when do they go back to being the correct airdates? Does that mean there's some incorrect preemption listed on sites for YR later in 1986 that doesn't happen?

I thought this bit of news brought some additional insight to the topic of 1980s ratings

    Screenshot 2023-09-23 at 16-47-04 BC-1987-01-12.pdf.png

Starting in 1987 Nielson dropped the ratings diaries, which required households to manually log their TV habits, and began digitally counting what people watched.  The article notes that there were many changes in the data that fall because there was less bias in the passive data collection.

It's annoying what they did in the Nielsen books in September 1987. For some reason, they didn't feel the need to list all of the "sustaining" programs (the breaking news) on a few pages like they did up until August 1987. And, more than just them now being spread out on many, many pages, they no longer list the exact start times (or days even) of the special reports. So, it's not as nice as I liked from the earlier issues. They just lump all of the special reports into a half-hour time period (without listing the day even). So it will say at some point during the week, for example, there was an NBC News Special Report in the 130-2PM time frame, but not list when it started or ended or what day it was. At least from the timing data of "Days" in other pages, you can sort of figure it out that way, but it just adds more to the puzzle instead of listing them all nicely like they used to!

  6. WITH WGA STRIKE POSSIBLY NEARING ITS END, HERE'S WHAT IT MEANS FOR "DAYS OF OUR LIVES" VIEWERS...

"Days" fans, with the WGA (writer) strike possibly set to end in the coming days, here's an update on what to expect with "Days of Our Lives." Head writer Ron Carlivati said in early May that he had written through around Christmas Day 2023 when the strike started on May 1. With the strike nearing its 5-month mark, that means all of the "Days" episode storylines airing from around Christmas Day 2023 through around the end of May Sweeps 2024 will have been written by scabs. As for the dialogue (script) writers, who work several weeks behind Carlivati's storylines, that means a majority of the dialogue (scripts) will have been written by scabs and airing from around early-mid December 2023 to early-mid May 2024. All of these are the estimated time frames. The WGA deal is not yet finalized, but from reports, could be over in the coming days.
