exactly! that archive is a goldmine — don’t know how many i’ve watched, but lipton’s is the only one under two hours. for someone of his caliber, i’d say three is the average — some are as much as six hours. people know it’s important and they cleared their schedules i was put off my his dismissive attitude toward soaps. though in his book, ‘inside, inside,’ he tells a hilarious story about irna.

agreed that it was random. but, i’ll never forget that screen with larry bryggman in a rocking chair saying goodby to their baby (can’t remember the name).

on ryan’s hope, when kate mulgrew (mary) became pregnant in real life it was written into the show. she gave the baby up for adoption, but mary had the baby (ryan) so, when she returned to the show she had to play a happy new mother. can’t even imagine.

this one, at least, had real consequences. it’s why irna was fired in 1973 — she died six months later. and a few years later, gave doug marland the opportunity to retcon into frannie/sabrina and win an emmy for julianne moore.

I call it the Douglas Marland effect because any soap opera he was head-writing had that type of dialogue... which was very unrealistic irna phillips was also known for her clunky dialogue. but she and doug marland certainly knew how to structure story.

i loved this scene, and wanted to see more of the same, as well. we need to see more of leslie’s vulnerability — without that, she’ll never be more than a cartoon. the guy’s a cardiac surgeon ffs. how could someone this stupid possibly get through medical school? hell, how could someone this stupid get INTO medical school?!

they’ve been all in on this speeded up storytelling from the get go and it doesn’t look as that will change anytime soon. why? to attract the 18-49 demo. begs the question: are there enough of them to offset those of us who are their way out? this same kind of money nonsense was on the gilmore girls. rory’s father starts paying for her last two years at yale. so richard and emily decide to use the money they’re savings — tops, $250,000 — to endow a building in rory’s name when in reality they’d have to add a couple of zeros. i could hand wave that because the money never made any sense on that show. but here, when leslie — and i just about done with writing her as a cartoon — can use that money to drive story? sorry!
