  1. loved how they juxtaposed the scenes between martin and smitty wiith those between jacob and elon. malachi malik was so good conveying the subtext of the situation.
  2. which is exactly what bloom was hoping. but gaining new viewers comes at the expense of alienating current viewers — some of whom will stop watching.
  3. yes, susan batten was the first at ‘world turns — one of the worst recasts ever — but nothing compared to what barbara bloom did when she took over cbs daytime in 2003. left jfp in the dust. it was like a full employment program for people she worked with at abc: after roger howarth and jon lindstrom — nothing against any of the actors — there was noelle beck replacing martha byrne, kin shriner, stuart damon, julie pinson, and probably a few more i don’t recall off the top of my head.
  4. howarth was barbara bloom first attempt to turn ‘world turns into an abc soap. there was no reason to recast paul ryan when scott holroyd was so good. then, a few years later, scott bryce was fired as craig and replaced with jon lindstrom. fwiw: bloom worked with both actors when she was running abc daytime.
  5. more about irna and beyond the gates… Part 2: What would Irna think.
  6. didn’t see anything about this in the ny times. trump hates democrats — he really does and boo hoo for lisa murkowski — who “agonized” over her vote to pass the big, beautiful nightmare.
  7. just found this: Bob Hughes' eulogy to his grandfather, on June 4th, 1976 Thank you for being with us today. Pa would have liked this rain, and what it would do for all growing things. He loved birth, growth, nurturing. This would be his kind of day--and perhaps it is. Because he we are, too---his friends, his neighbors, his pastor and three generations of the family whom he loved so much together. He would love the fact of Mom cooking this morning, so that people cold eat later on--if they wanted to stay together a little longer and talk a little longer. We loved him, and he loved us. That love will always be with us, because we each carry some living memory of him, and that will go on as long as we go on. We Hugheses all shared for years my grandfather's blessing of having such a good man live among us. Grandpa had a sweetness and a tolerance. He believed there was good in everyone. When we were kids we used to say, "Now, Grandpa, not everybody's good." And he'd say, "Oh, yes—it's there—but in some people it just never had a chance to grow." He never tried to tell you what to do, but he had a way of leading you to what was right, and what was the truth. Sometimes—sometimes we didn't take his hand when he offered to lead us, and that's when we got into trouble. In the last year of his life, he married a lovely woman. She's with her family today. She needs them just as we need each other here. Grandpa has a great-granddaughter who is only two and a half. She's home. She may not understand our sadness, but she will share the memories of Pa through all of us, and someday pass some of them on to her children—and so on and on part of his spirit will always be with us. It's stopped raining. As much as he loved the rain, Pa loved the sun that came after the rain. Pa loved life. Pa loved God. He's with Him.
  8. pretty sure they had no idea that this episode would be followed by a week of repeats when they wrote it.
  9. while i’ve been lukewarm about nuTed, this exchange is the first time i was really feeling him and nicole. and, yes, he keeping another big secret — but he told her he had something to tell her and she immediately assumed that it was dani/andre, then went on a tear and wouldn’t let him get a word in. nicole has been presented as a paragon of virtue. very realistic that they’re showing this side of her, given everything she’s been through.
  10. bill moyers has died — one of the best. free link: ny times bill moyers obit
  11. here’s an interesting take: some observations about beyond the gates
  12. Oh, but this makes it "edgy." (No, you're absolutely right, this was a terrible decision). that was my initial reaction. but then it occurred to me that having him in the mix could have am impact on the whole doug-vanessa situation and decided to wait and see how the aftermath unfolds.

  14. i was in diapers when guiding light began on television and my mother started watching. back then kids in grammer school came home for lunch. my sister and i remember well having lunch with the bauer brothers.
  15. was just coming to say the same thing. not seeing any chemistry between them. makes me wonder why they recast.
  16. here’s a free link to the ny times obit. anne burell ny times obit
  17. begs the question: why — why — must naomi meet clients, whose conversations with her are PRIVILEGED!, at the country club or coffee shop instead of her office — like a real lawyer? same for vernon and martin. i know the # of sets is a $$ issue. but, at least these two could meet at the depree manse, where discussing what’s supposed to be a secret could not be overheard?
  18. nothing nearly about it.
  19. i’d be okay if they got married and left the show:) but, instead they’ll keep pushing ashley/andre — that’s what the ff button’s for.
  20. dani could use an edible.
  21. i recently watched a few episodes of b&b, and am in full agreement about the endless conversations. btg has so many storylines going on at once, that this choppy pacing is inevitable— but still frustrating. re the news-break: be glad it was john dickinson; dan rather would have gobbled up the rest of the show. as annoying as these break-ins are, no quarrels about what looks to be a full-blown war in the middle east. and be glad that we have alternatives. back in the day, the episode would have been lost.
  22. and kat talking with nicole. with so many characters and storylines, they skip over a lot of emotional beats we should be seeing.
  23. really! her father has a stroke and all she can think about is getting laid?! but, while chelsea’s behavior isn’t really all that surprising, madison’s defies belief. the writers went out of their way to reduce her age, since what 30-year old attending neurologist would be gushing like a teenager, and going live on social media with a patient’s daughter? on another note: i’ve never watched either y&r or b&b, but for the past three days, b&b has been on (long story:) but three episodes with nothing but characters endlessly rehashing the danger sociopath luna presents to steffy was excruciating! nothing happened, no character development, nothing happening among the characters — just crazy luna, over and over and over. have no idea if this is standard for b&b. but, if it is, btg not holding b&b viewers makes sense.
  24. has canada been a day ahead from the beginning — or did they get a new episode on memorial day, when cbs aired a rerun here?
  25. from her nytime obit: ”Ms. Mahaffey had worked steadily over the past five decades, starting out on the NBC daytime soap opera, “The Doctors,” for which she received a Daytime Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in 1980.”
