The Brezes were also on the writing staff of OLTL in the mid-80s. On the staff with them at one point was TD's final headwriter, Barbara Morgenroth (who is a novelist now). -
Agreed. The timing left much to be desired, as he left just as Billy would be part of his biggest story to date.

He had won the role of the mayor's son in Jaws 2, and is still based in LA today. I would guess it was his decision to leave the show.

As far as I can tell, the last episode he wrote for TD aired 9/30/1977. Mel and Ethel Brez's material just started airing.

I think Marland was a much better fit for the hour-long soap. He could stretch his grand (grandiose?) stories out more. Today, we got the debut of Billy #4 - Shawn Campbell, who passed in 1993 at age 34. He was the last Billy before Alec Baldwin.
