  1. I checked the IMDB recaps from 1988 and Ridge's party for Kristen with the 10 Most Eligible Bachelors happened the week after he slept with Caroline in June (still no video of the episode on youtube). Not to indulge in too much fanfic, but, I wish the focus was on motivations for Ridge's voracious sexual appetite (cough, cough, his Oedipal complex) rather than pathologizing Carolyn's lack of sexual desires. B&B always played off Ridge as 'just a playboy', but his need to sleep with every woman that his father and brother have ever slept with (except Stephanie) is odd.
  2. I'm of two minds on the Marion/Brent story. At the time I recall being on the proverbial edge of my seat during the story. The youtuber who covers Springfield history has a brilliant edit of the story with all of the tension and drama. However, in retrospect, the transphobia and HIV scare tactics are heavy-handed and inappropriate. Marion/Brent on GL and Michael Baldwin on Y&R reflected an offensive sensibility about rape. It was as if there wasn't any faith that justice would be served by the legal system. There is dialogue in both stories about how both rapists would be freed because of their race and financial positions. So, rather than going to prison for their original crime the writers had to up the ante in order for the threat to be validated by the other male characters. It sent a bad message that women aren't going to be believed if they report sexual assault unless they've been stalked, beaten, or their was mother killed. The exploitation of female victimhood is one of the things that has turned me off of soaps.
  3. I was listening to a podcast that made an excellent point today about Vanderpump Rules. Next season are we going to follow Tom & Arianna to their new $2 million home? Won't it ruin the illusion to suddenly see the bartenders living in a four-bedroom house that is less than five miles from Kyle Richards's mansion? That being said, I am not here for any further Vanderpump spin-offs. That crew was the reality equivalent of a needle in a haystack because they were already so intertwined. Further Vanderpump spin-offs would likely suffer the same fate as Lindsay's beachhouse which seems so contrived because the people just met and the stakes for getting employment elsewhere couldn't be lower. I am completely disinterested in ever watching the travails of people who may be underqualified to volunteer at a pet store.
  4. I don't recall Lauren cheating on Scott during their marriage. I thought the affair with Brad happened after they were separated? It's the classic "Friends-we-were-on-a-break" excuse. Also, fidelity aside, I think it is clear who was the villain once Sheila infamously called Lauren to have a playdate and then taunted her with, "oh that's right, I forgot, your baby is dead." https://www.buzzfeed.com/iramadison/a-dig-about-a-dead-child-led-to-one-the-most-insane-tv-scene
  5. I'm currently reading the 1983 summaries and I have questions that I hope someone can answer. The characters of Mark and Brian keep coming up and I keep confusing them. I know Mark is having an affair with Amanda and Jennifer, and that he is under an assumed name. But can someone remind about Brian? I think I am confused by the memory of Mark Pinter as Brian McColl, but that was on ATWT. Also, Mark, Quint, and Mona all went by fake names, and they renamed the baby Staci at the same time? How did viewers keep it all straight? Also, there was a prior mention that Quint was not meant to be a Chamberlain when the character was conceived. If anyone has more information on that I would appreciate it. From tumblr GUIDING LIGHT: Week of January 10 - January 14, 1983 (3:00pm - 60 minutes - CBS) Mark suspected the mystery man who knocked him unconscious knows Mark’s true identity. College student Clay Tynan told Mike and Ross that he saw Mark with Brian. Phillip admitted he resents the fact that Alan and Justin packed him off to boarding school. After conning Rick into drag racing, Phillip took the blame and was charged with drunk driving. Mark and Brian went to London to get their share of Mona’s (Rebecca’s) estate. Rebecca failed to seduce Quint, who returned from Hollywood before Nola. Mark and Amanda comforted each other behind closed doors. Maureen dated Matt. Hillary set out to win back Kelly after he spotted Morgan kissing Josh.
  6. tomorrow on Decades THE JOAN RIVERS SHOW - SUSAN LUCCI, AGNES NIXON, FELICIA BEHR, AND MORE "Susan Lucci reveals her favorite moments from the Soap world, life behind-the-scenes, and her audience's response to Erica Kane. Then, Agnes Nixon and Felicia Behr join to discuss the writing and producing process of All My Children."
  7. LVP's annual plea for a relationship with Erika Jayne mystifies me. Erika is civil to LVP regardless of their friendship status, and she's not a [!@#$%^&*]-stirrer, so there doesn't seem to be any personal gain. They have nothing in common, they don't share a similar sense of humor, and they have no similar interests. Also, LVP always dresses as if she spent lots of money a decade ago on clothes and has been recycling them ever since. Nothing she wears ever looks new or fresh. She's got three hairdos, a dozen pink silk blouses, some good bags, and a bunch of old shoes that Rosio keeps painting the bottoms red. On the other hand, does Louis Vuitton really make hair salon smocks?
  8. I forgot that Texas and The Doctors ended on the same day. I wonder what the promos were like? Texas makes my head spin trying to remember the characters (Ashley, Allison, and Paige all merge into one) but The Doctors still had many OG characters on until the end TEXAS: Week of December 27 - December 31, 1982 (11:00am - 60 minutes - NBC) FINAL WEEK Justin and Ashley reunited after she gave birth to a girl. Judith decided to give Grant and Reena a chance at happiness. Paige was optimistic that she and TJ will have a future together. Brett was persuaded to take a job in Alaska. Allison and Ashley reconciled. Stella was promoted, and Vicky threw a farewell party at KVIK after she lost ownership. And the only truly happy couple appeared to be Lurlene and Joel. THE DOCTORS: Week of December 27 - December 31, 1982 (Noon - 30 minutes - NBC) FINAL WEEK Jeff pulled the veil from his new bride, who turned out to be Adrienne. Natalie was shocked to learn Paul and Felicia were arrested for murdering Billy. Matt and Maggie reconciled, while Kit and Mike also planned a wedding. Althea got fed up with Jean Marc’s preoccupation with Felicia. Ivy split when Luke found a new girl.
  9. @WendySomehow Kelly Capwell looked ten years younger in her second wedding to Jeffery than in her first wedding to Joe (with an awful hairdo and neck-thingy)
  10. GH's Brenda Barrett has had a couple of time to do it correctly The first time was pretty, but generic and didn't fit her daily style I don't know the order of this one (#2 or #3) but it is my favorite Then, there's this one which is just the worst, bad fit, bad hair, bad dress
  11. Lucy's red wedding was way before Game of Thrones But her hat was only slightly larger than Reva's
  12. If we are talking headpieces then Calliope's really takes the proverbial cake, she seems to be satirizing Hope's global headgear Then we got Amanda Cory's convertible headpiece; one for the ceremony and one for if you wanted to go jogging later Nina Courtland's hats got better every time she remarried
  13. A couple more of my favorites Felicia (GH) - I love the traditional veil, she looks gorgeous Anna Devane (GH) - I like when a dress matches the character and this looks like something Anna would wear at the time. She was a professional, who had started to embrace feminity with Robert, so it seemed like something she would buy WORST On the other hand, I do not believe that chic Barbara Ryan would wear a figure skating outfit to her wedding to Hal And Kim's headpiece defies explanation - how did she hear her vows?
  14. In honor of this week's Oscars and the inevitable posts about best and worst dressed, I thought I would post a few of my best and worst soap wedding dresses of all time. BEST: no particular order: Sloan Denning (Capitol) - so chic, good use of a headpiece, the dress was appropriate for such a big wedding and I think it holds up to the test of time Kelly Capwell (Santa Barbara) - I love the nod to vintage fashion, this wasn't Kelly's first wedding so she kept it simple when marrying her fiance's evil twin WORST Hope Brady's multi-tiered veil seemed like it was used to make her the same height as Bo - I recall that the actress wore it again to her own wedding, (maybe it was still stuck to her head?). Nikki Newman's 80 lbs gown was a little over the top for a woman on her third wedding And finally, the worst of all time Eden Capwell's Pebble Beach Victorian Wedding - not the right dress for the occasion, setting, time, or place - it is so horrible that even the awful bridesmaid's dresses were not as gouache Please respond with pictures of your favorite and least favorite ensemble

    Christopher Atkins turned 58 yesterday
  16. I was trying to do the Blake/Fowler SORAS math to see if it strains logic. Rachel, Mitch, and Janice were around the same age. Amanda was 18 when she met Sam and Evan Frame. So, Loretta either stole some early iteration of Botox, or she had Sam twenty years after Mitch, or Janice had vastly underestimated her age. Either way, I think the inclusion of Loretta just confused the issue of how Mitch's brother could be age-appropriate for Amanda and Olivia.
  17. I like this one because of all the ways one could watch tv on the go before iphones - it was all of the convenience of carrying around a brick with cord I had a Sony Watchman TV. As I recall it was expensive, around $80 at the time, and I bought it to sneak a peek at Bo&Hope's wedding while in school. Analog reception, with a dial that had to be tuned to the exact position, so it was impossible to move and watch a show, and a screen so small it makes an iphone look like imax.
  18. Let's put it this way: I don't believe Doug Marland ever intended for Quint to be tied to Chamberlains like that. Can you (or anyone else) expound on this?
  19. And she was presumed dead twice more in her lifetime? That's life in a soap town...
  20. It is funny that you would ask that because I was reading a recap from 1979 and this came up: Jill entered L'Allegro and suddenly felt less alone ... Derek was there too. One thing is certain, she would not reveal that she was shocked to hear that Suzanne and he were planning to remarry. Derek, who did not want to let him know that he too was shocked by the news, explained that he was planning to resell the Chancellor residence and leave for the south of France with Suzanne. He would probably leave tomorrow. He would never see each other again after tonight. Which also made me wonder if there was a time when Kay didn't live in the mansion (or residence as it is called here)?
  21. It may be because it is Valentine's Days but I am starting to come around to the "Heat of the Day" Two reasons, the editing of the scenes and the music is spot on which is not the same for the NBC promos. Also, primetime only needs one promo a week, but daytime needs so much more which must have been difficult creatively. BUT - "in the heat of the day/it's hot" is still an awful lyric
  22. I'm reading the 1982 summaries and I have a question: How surprising was Quint's revelation as Sean (Henry's son and Vanessa's brother)? From the summaries, it seems telegraphed from the beginning. However, Vanessa was surprised so I was wondering if the audience felt the same way?
  23. I have a question: When Laura became Stavros Cassadine's widow, (after she returned the first time when Luke was elected mayor) why didn't she get part of the Cassadine fortune in his will? In the promo for Laura's return, they show Stavros putting this huge necklace around her neck. Didn't she get to keep any of the jewelry? She seemed to have all of her clothes, why didn't she pack her diamonds? I was thinking the same thing about why Jennifer Horton didn't get any of the Alamain fortune when she divorced Lawrence. Soap divorce law can be so unjust. I know it's a soap, (yadda, yadda, yadda), but I am wondering if there was any mention of this detail in the story?
  24. It's odd that 30 years later promos were directed at a totally different audience. However, the 1974 promos are appropriate for their time. Heck, there was a show called How to Survive a Marriage, soaps were all about "contemporary drama" and navel-gazing seemed sophisticated.
  25. I find those spots to be equally cheeky and charming (even if they made no sense with the characters and their respective plotlines). Lenore Kasdorf and Kristen Meadows were so great on their prior shows that it might have induced me to tune in.
