I enjoyed the article too. I thought this was a good group of younger characters. Bell used to incorporate impotence a lot (in his Days stories anyway). Besides Mike, Doug was impotent with Julie after she was raped and Bob was also impotent with Julie. She was such a sensual being too. She really was frustrated when she was married to Bob! And then of course Susan Martin had the problem of being "frigid."

I believe it was Maree who was spelling her name "Marie" during that time. I think the spelling change was fairly recent.

Thanks for this article. I hadn't realized Heather North was on Days that early. And I always thought John Lupton looked like Johnny Carson, lol. I wish Days could bring Heather, Maree, Denise,and Susan back for the 50th anniversary, however briefly.

Did anyone else see the picture of Larkin Malloy in the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest? Apparently, he's going to be seen a web soap called "Tainted Dreams." His appearance has changed quite a bit. I wouldn't have recognized him if not for the caption.

Thanks for the John Clarke article. I often wonder how he's been since his retirement. Mickey is one of my all time favorite soap characters.

Yeah, I don't think I've seen Margaret Mason ever called Marge anywhere else. I've seen Maggie a few times. She was relatively new on Days at the time, I believe.

Since this is Days' anniversary, here is the cast in 1971 celebrating the 6th anniversary. Days had recently become the first soap to knock As the World Turns out of first place in the Neilsen ratings in 11 years.

It is disheartening to read about what happened with the David and Valerie story. I was young and naive at the time so had do idea there was a controversy. I loved Valerie. She could have been a great heroine for Days for a long time.

Regarding Dan's funeral, remember that the Stewarts were WASPs and so it wouldn't be unusual that they would be stoic in public.

I've only seen speculation that Kamel was gay but never saw any confirmation from him. He seemed to be a bit of a loner. I liked him a lot on Days (and Monk). I enjoyed the storyline with Susan, Greg, and Eric. Though I do wish Denise Alexander had stuck around to finish it.

It would be interesting to learn more about what Bell had in mind with those stories. The taping schedule then allowed them to quicklt change direction. I don't know why Sandy wasn't more fully developed as a character. I see Heather North occasionally on some of the late 60s tv shows on various retro channels.

He did ramble a bit but he was charming. He's in his 80s. Wish he would write a book or have someone help him with one.

John Karlen is apparently ill and in a hospital/rehabilitation center. This is a short early 70s interview with Days writer Bill Rega. Interesting that Days considered doing a prison rape storyline long ago but it was quashed by NBC. That must have been when Bill and Doug were in prison. I wonder who was going to be raped? Maybe Bill as retribution for raping Laura? I do remember Bill getting attacked by a gang while he was in prison and Doug rescued him.

I liked Gwen too. And I think Ann-Marie Martin is one of the most beautiful women ever on Days.

One of my biggest gripes with Nola's return was her obsession with Buzz. I just couldn't see her being attracted to him. He was the type she always dreamed of getting away from. I don't think being married to Quint would have changed that.

LOL, I guess if someone didn't know the characters it could look that way. Interesting that a story about a considered abortion would be featured in an ad that long ago. I wonder whether they would get away with that now? I'm guessing the woman from the past in the Bill and Laura story was Linda Phillips. She tried to pass Melissa off as Mickey's daughter for a second time after he got amnesia. Laura had previously told her about Mickey's sterility the first time she tried to do it.

Wow, that Lisa Howard story is interesting (and sad). I have never heard of her. What roles did she play on the soaps?
