As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I think HBS would have been fine in the right-to-die story, but the rape/HIV story wasn't her type of material at all (she was not at her best at that type of heavy dramatic material on OLTL - she just got shrill). I also thought Ellen and Scott Holmes had more chemistry than he did with HBS. To me it was the writing that destroyed them - once they took away the everyday couple aspect of Tom and Margo in 1995 or 1996 and she just barked and he yelled all the time, they were never any good.

He's selling books and lots of them...and he's probably writing the next book as I type this. This is all about filling his coffers and in a way I can't hate on his game. If it weren't for the fact that he's so shameless and totally embarrassing himself plus black people I'd admire it. That's a big part of it. The other part is pride. He was incensed at Ted Cruz's camp spreading rumors that he was dropping out after Iowa. I'm surprised to see some Beltway media, like Chris Cilizza, actually saying that McConnell made a big political mistake with how he handled replacing Scalia. I don't agree, but I wish I did. And here's this dumbass: http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2016/02/15/3749689/rand-paul-scalia-supreme-court-obama-nominee/ I can't help being a bit amused that Scalia's passing has saved unions: http://gawker.com/by-dying-antonin-scalia-saves-public-sector-unions-1759175874 Well, they always said Jesus was a liberal.

One of the big reasons she left was that they changed some of the childcare stuff she'd worked out with the previous producer. She'd nearly left the year before when she was pregnant (she'd even had an exit interview with SOD) and only came back when they agreed to some of what she wanted (as well as her son playing Adam). This led to that odd period where she was in Greece and Tom was quasi-dating Shannon. She'd also been there for about 6 years and wanted something new. I liked HBS but given that she'd had a foot out the door and they'd already recast Margo (and recast Tom), I can see why they chose to just let her leave if she wished, and recast. I don't think Dolan did any worse in the story than HBS would have.

Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I was really a bit disgusted at Belle using Aaron's sexual abuse to score points. That family is so toxic now. Kirin's exit was so quick I do wonder if Adam surprised them by quitting. Either that or it's just the usual poor pacing. Stuff like how they dropped his relationship with Belle makes me wonder.

Oh they do. And the average voter, along with the media, will back them up, most likely.

I'm still in April 1969. I watch it with my mother so that takes longer...that and that time period, especially the Penny stuff, doesn't really make me want to rush to watch. Most of the discussion is at Daytime Royalty.

I'm already seeing the spin about how great it was for Marco and terrible for Trump, so the scripts have been delivered in advance. I have to admit it makes me laugh to see a GOP frontrunner talk at length about how W helped cause 9/11. I never thought I'd see the day.

I think the Dobsons wanted to give Tom more of an edge, as most of their leading men had that edge. I think it was also another ABC-ization of ATWT.

I think in a great many cases they are not at all a smokescreen. I find educated liberals vastly underestimate the influence of religion on this society. There are a ton of people out there who truly believe life begins at conception and that's how Jesus wants it. If you hold that belief of course it's going to be a litmus test, how could it not be? On top of all that he entire state of Kansas is basically owned by the Koch brothers and is quickly going to hell in a hand basket thanks to that fact. They're a smokescreen to the people in power. I don't think people really underestimate the influence of religion, but there's nothing that can be done about it. Educated liberals spent the '90s and most of the '00s basically telling Democrats if they couched talk of gay rights and abortion and so on in the right terms, or if they were ardently anti-gay and anti-abortion and so on, they'd get votes - other than Bill Clinton, who ran against two extremely weak Republican nominees for President, they generally didn't. So that means waiting for people who do vote exclusively on social issues to realize that unless they're very wealthy, the vote they cast is more likely to leave them destitute than it is to strike some type of blow against heathenistic liberals. Whether that will ever happen, I don't know.

Oh that liberal media - when an idiot lies about the truth and you dare to point it out, make sure you beg forgiveness. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/02/13/after-a-tense-exchange-with-ted-cruz-john-dickerson-apologized-he-shouldnt-have/

I don't disagree that the structure of our system is rigged, but people who don't vote just make that even more of a guarantee. I also think that most of the people in power who are hard right on social issues are at this point the worst out there on economic issues, and are also heavily racist, so while social issues aren't a monolith, they are a smokescreen. For instance, Republicans in states like Kansas who campaigned in large part on "family values" have spent years ardently working to stop minority voters from being able to go to the polls and also spent years wasting money on garbage like drug tests for welfare.

Sadly, I doubt most people give a damn. They will just assume Judge Judy will call Judge Wapner out of retirement to help for the time being. Obama would be better off using this to drum into heads why voting is so important, especially for those frou-frous who insist everyone running is the same and nothing matters.

Well apparently this really is now the consensus decision: http://www.politico.com/story/2016/02/mitch-mcconnell-antonin-scalia-supreme-court-nomination-219248 Why do I have a feeling if, say, Bernie Sanders is elected, they will get collective amnesia. Or even Hillary.
