Thanks. I didn't know that. He did have some odd sitcoms, like the disco marital sitcom by Bob Hope's daughter. That whole period seems much more interesting to me than most of what was on CBS or ABC. If there was a streaming channel that showed all of their lineup I'd check it out.

Nadine did terrible things, but I never really held it against her because she did pay in the end - she had no one in her corner (often do to her own insecurities) and was consigned to scraps at Fifth Street for her last few years on the canvas. JFP also tended to have characters do extreme things and then try to move on without proper focus (Alex and Eve being the same). Jean Carol made the character more sympathetic to me. I do think the show preferred Jenna to Nadine. Nadine was mostly there to move stories of other characters along while Jenna was in a central role even though the show never really had any idea what to do with her after the marriage to Roger ended. Jenna wasn't treated the best by Buzz, but that's typical of how JFP views female characters.

I think Fred took a lot of risks, but most just didn't pay off or were dragged down by the general reputation of the network. There are a few I wish I could see, like that "whatever happened to the class of '56" show, or whatever the title was. Others like trying to make Number 96 for an American market were never going to work on network TV.

I agree - Buzz treated her like garbage. I did like the actors together but not the writing. Probably not tips, but maybe a "why are we both in shitty stories about stolen money" scene.

Thanks. I did enjoy the chemistry between Justin and Jean Carol, even if we were never meant to (Jenna/Buzz was the favorite). So the show had two stolen money stories a few months apart. I wonder if Buzz ever went to Tangie to ask for any tips.

(I'm ashamed to admit I was rooting for George when she was brawling with Lucy) I remember some story with Buzz living in a rundown house and having stolen money (I think) and being feverish, and Bunny was Nadine's boyfriend, but he was bad and out to get Ross. I thought somebody was in drag but maybe I was just so busy fast forwarding at the time I took a sight the wrong way.

I think the era that JJ thrived in died about 25 years ago, and if he returns he will probably just be another directionless male character who looks sad (they already have Michael Easton for that), but I do think it's a mistake to not try one more time with Brenda, especially while Rena Sofer is around. 100% with you here. It was only the scripting teams who kept some semblance of quality until the late '00s or so. Most of the stories and character decisions from late '96 and onward sucked and often felt like a square peg being bludgeoned into a round hole.

I guess in some cases it wasn't a direct move. Ricky Paull Goldin had had a stint on Y&R not too long before he joined GL, so that might have had more impact on his casting. Marcy however was directly tied to SB, due to JFP. I am half-surprised they didn't try to do any of those cute ads like NBC did with actors from other soaps joining DAYS/SB. (I wonder if they did one for Denise Alexander and AW or if she said hell no)

Supertrain is one of those shows I wish had been a hit just to see how they possibly could have maintained such a ludicrous concept. That cast...nothing against Alan Alda's father, but when he's the main actor I know, they aren't sending their best. Aarika Wells sounds like an adult entertainment name. There's something hellish about that second opening. It looks like an acid trip from a late '60s film.

I suppose Malloy and Goldin at least had some success, but Marcy never did at GL. Her fitting right back in when she returned to AMC just showed how little effort was made at GL. For someone as hands-on as JFP was at her soaps, I have no idea what she was even doing at GL by her last few years as producer. I do remember that the only stories I thought were genuinely worthwhile were those that didn't involve her pet actors. This period also had the actor who played Bunny on SB - I think he was in drag on GL too. Or somebody in that story was in drag...

Sometimes I wonder if Toby's Amanda was a bit ahead of her time - I could see her being a hit on Twitter. That's a good idea about what the Van/Matt/Beth story could have been. And the info from Hurst. I never saw any chemistry between Kurt and Beth, or Beth and much of anyone, although she did her best with the truly mindboggling writing she had throughout her second stint on the show (glad I was not watching much by the time she was married to Rick and having Alan's child). I think on paper she fit more than several other hires at that time, like Sonia Satra and Justin Deas, but it did seem like she ended up being a difficult fit when she finally arrived. I believe the only pairing she ever had that generated fan interest was with Det. Cutter, and it was clear the show had no interest. Having her as Holly's niece might have been a better idea, especially if they wanted to play up ties to Roger.

It's difficult for a soap to get off the ground on a good note. What I am cautious about is that even if the show is good from the start, some may reject it anyway because it isn't immediately going bang zoom pow. We'll just have to hope for the best and for industry support.

Obviously the Soapnet airing has been around but I'm not as sure if this version has been (complete with commercials).

I could have seen Marcy as a good Amanda recast, although she might have been a bit young for the part.
