You got to wonder if ED is looking at DOOL with some nostalgia right about now. How strange that DOOL is a paragon of girl power compared to Y&R.

It's bad, bad, bad... And it's got Hogie and Scottie written all over it, with a naive Maria just okaying everything. Ugh.
That's my suspicion, too, but are we being sexist if we see it this way? I am not sure which is worse. Either MAB is fully responsible for this misogynistic garbage and this is her vision or she's some weak-brained girl who is being led around by the nose by the Nasty Boys. -

As for the rules themselves, I think it also needs to be mentioned that good writers both know the conventions AND know how to bend or break them successfully.
When you're a genius like Marland or Labine, you can break the rules because your doing it knowingly. With idiots like Chuck Pratt, you get the sense that they have zero idea that writing is a craft and that soap writing has certain rules. I think he broke every one of DM's rules. -

If the big cast was the problem then they never should have brought Phillip back in the first place. Phillip's story SHOULD have provided months if not YEARS of story for a slew of characters. Instead, the beats were rushed through within a few weeks and now it's all a complete anticlimax, and Chance only exists as a prop for Billy/Chloe.
As a straight white woman, I find the "big cast" argument to be total bullshit. My "peoples" (heterosexuals and whites) have countless stories on Y&R and other soaps. Gays and Minorities should NOT be sidelined with the excuse that the cast is too large so we can't show them. That is [!@#$%^&*] bullshit. Bill Bell conscientiously wove in Black characters and gave them real stories with real romances. There is no excuse for MAB's idiotic and insulting "gay" stories. If she had one artistic bone in her body, she would have realized that in order to do a gay story (or minority story) right, you have to take special care and attention. Because the white straight characters have so many stories, it's not a big deal if you screw up Billy & Mac. You can just put Billy with Chloe and still get a straight romance. When you have only 2 gay characters (plus one psycho) then you need to be very thoughtful and setting up your story. AMC, OLTL and ATWT aren't perfect (far from it) but they all showed that if you take proper care, you can create a decent gay story.
(And I will always think that the failure to make P4/Chance a conflicted gay soldier was one of the great failures of Y&R.) -

If MAB wrote Jews the way she writes women, she would rightly be accused of anti-Semitism. The woman is a liar, a cheat and a misogynist. -

It just makes no sense from a public relations standpoint to court the gay press, all the while never having ANY intention of coming up with the goods... and then ADMITTING in the press that "ha-ha we never had any intention of doing this, screw y'all!" It seems beyond the pale of fool-hardiness, don't you think? If they backed out due to viewer outrage, one would THINK Maria and Co. would rather been seen as cowards as opposed to manipulative liars, don't you think?
Where is the viewer outrage? People hated Rafe/Adam because of the recast, the bad writing and the general stupidity of the story. Adam can manipulate Victor easily but he has to resort to sex to trick Rafe? That's just stupid. Adam should have been playing on Rafe's feelings for him for a longtime and been genuinely trapped, i.e. caught red-handed before he felt that he had to sleep with Rafe. Anyway, what does that have to do with P3?! Just because Radam sank like the Titanic, doesn't mean that TPTB can't do a decent story for P3. First off, P3 is actually gay and not pretending! Second, he's not a psycho or a killer or the victim of being recasted beyond recognition. Even if Rafe is too young for him, why not bring on someone for P3? MAB brings on new characters every other day! Hell, steal from OLTL and bring on a gay cop investigating the "Art" thing and pair him with P3. It's not rocket science and it's not a big deal. One of the many reasons I refuse to drop the Engen issue is because MAB & Company refuse to see the failure of Radam is due to a revolt against NuAdam (the actor and the crazy writing) and NOT a revolt against a gay story. If TPTB had two licks of common sense they would have brought on Chance as a conflicted gay soldier (just like Fish on OLTL), paired him with a proudly out Rafe and thrown Adam in as the spoiler -- who led Rafe on for a good long while before (if ever) having sex with him. Chance & Rafe could have been HUGE! People want to see a good angsty gay love story between two actual gays. People also want to see young hot men (no offense to TB). How is that OLTL can do this so very well but TIIC at Y&R don't even know their asses from their elbows?
