Dynasty Discussion Thread

When you compare S9 to the five or six seasons that came before, I would agree. There's a sense of purpose in the storytelling that those previous years woefully lacked. On the other hand, as good as S9 was overall, I still feel it falls short, due to budget cuts and the toll that years of bad or non-existent storytelling have taken on the characters.
But I definitely agree with you about Matthew and Lindsay Blaisdel. Once again, as I've said in the past, it really comes down to the casting of those two roles. If they had hired better actors, I feel like that component would've lasted much longer on the show and maintained the "rich vs. poor" element (with Krystle caught in the middle) that DYNASTY was built upon.

This is not exactly relevant to the conversation, but I was watching some of Summer 1982, and the whole "Alan and Henry step away to start their own company with Hope" thing was a real low point for Marland, IMO.
First of all, Hope was an interior decorator. It was as if she had to be part of the company to make sure Alan didn't slip back into his old ways. Or maybe Marland couldn't think of anything to do with Hope so he put her in the middle of that so they could fulfill her minimum appearances per week in her contract.
I believe it's around the time that Marland steps down that the new writers do the whole struggle over Spaulding story, as you outlined. Having Alan and Henry sitting by the fire and talking about cutting back on the cutthroat atmosphere of the corporate world was a major blunder, IMO. I have no idea where Marland thought he was going with that. Having it cut short by Marland leaving was an immediate improvement to the show.
Though why the oil rig was called the "Madrid Project" I will never figure out--Madrid is in the MIDDLE of Spain! It's not on the coast! You can't have off-shore drills in Madrid! Did any of these people own a MAP? (Yeah, I know, it's not really a big deal but my family lived in Spain for a while and it bugs me).
Yes to all of this. It would have been great if they worked the fact that AM was a Bauer into the story. And have it really drive Alan mad! The Bauers were his nemeses for a very long time.

The truth is as much as I am a fan of the chaos Suzanne brought to the show, I think Jean staying for another year would have been more successful than Delta staying for a season without Jean. But the one two punch was just deadly.
Unlike other shows that lost a major star but found new or continued life, Designing Women’s format was really curated with those four women, and Anthony later fit in beautifully. Bernice was fun but not the same weight. Much like Golden Girls- you take out one of the core and the balance is off. This wasn’t Cheers, where you had a larger supporting cast ready to be expanded in telling the jokes to help things settle down after Diane left. Same with the Cosby show and A Different World without Denise- others picked it up and ran with it. Mary Tyler Moore weathered the loss of her non work friends by centering more at the station. I also cannot imagine Living Single if one of the four ladies was gone, although Kyle being gone was also a huge blow.
