That ad for Generations just reminds me how disappointed I was in the first episode of the show.

It opens with a scene from a soap opera being taped (I think one of the characters was an actor) and it was deliberately silly. Someone ends up falling down the stairs, it was very melodramatic. And, I thought, COOL, they're showing us how THIS show is going to be different from other soap operas!

And then it cuts to Sam in bed with her professor, and she's thinking, "I just HAVE to get an A on my test!"

I was like, SERIOUSLY, this is the new and exciting soap opera storyline? You could practically hear the sad trombone noises in the background.

I know you can't judge a soap by the first episode and it takes a while for them find their footing, but I thought somebody made a very poor choice there.

Also love how the tag line for One Life to Live calls a hidden baby storyline "unique." Oh, yeah, never saw that on a soap before, that was definitely the first one! 😂

Regarding Generations' first episode, the soap-within-a-soap fake out was good for a smile. On the other hand, it lasts for quite a few minutes and comes across as filler. Still, it's fun to see Nancy Cartwright, a year before The Simpsons, as Jack Betts' nurse.

  • Thanks! I'd never heard of this. Others mentioned are Rosemary Prinz (who is one of the leads), Don Galloway, David Lewis, Tom Hallick. And directed by Gloria Monty! Sorry for anyone I'm forgetting to

I'm hoping more of these afternoon tv movies are found and put on YT especially under the ABC Afternoon Playbreak (which seems like an Afterschool special.. except for women instead of kids/pre-teens)

Very nice of them to have a contest to give Liz Kemp a job (that explains her Ryan's Hope part).

Nice photo of Ilene Kristen.

I liked Jonathan Hogan when he was on ATWT, but I don't know if I'd ever call him a heartthrob.

In that first photo Terry Logan's shoes are weird even for the 70's.

I love that photo of Jeanne Cooper and Trish Stewart together. They must have been very close. When you see photos of them together Trish has her hand on her shoulder or embracing her in some way.

Peter Brown in another 70's Jack Lord-esque portrait. It's surprising how many soap actors who have posed nude. Peter Brown, Mark Lamura, Steve Bond, John Gibson, Tom Ligon, Jaime Lyn Bauer, Victoria Principal, Ryan MacDonald, George Reinholt, Dennis Parker etc...

That Denise Alexander and David Hartman photo! It reminds me of the gag one from Soapdish, of a young Sally Field and Kevin Kline.

I need to give this stuff a rest. Other posters are probably getting sick of it by now.

So many tasty headlines

'The Secret Life of Stanley Kamel'

'How Ann Flood Faces A Woman's Most Intimate Problem"

Wouldn't it be great if someone could scan and post some of these magazines?

@P.J. Part of a Jordan Clarke article.

As often happens in those articles, Sam Groom divorced his wife a few years after his high praise.

It's heartbreaking to see that article and photo with Ann Williams and her husband knowing that a decade or so later they were both dead.

I'm not sure Ben Andrews should talk about gender roles with that sassy pose.

One of my favorite things about '70s Daytime TV articles is you are going to get so many articles with either

  • men talking [!@#$%^&*] about feminism

  • women talking [!@#$%^&*] about feminism

  • people talking about how much they love EST (see Ted Danson)

  • a guy (sometimes a gal) holding a guitar

I noticed that, too! A lot of the headlines about women are meant to make them seem less ambitious than men, like they really just want to be married and have kids, or how other things matter more to them besides their acting job.

This was very common in the media during the 70s. I can't remember who the woman was being interviewed, I think she was a famous writer. The article about her opened up by describing how she was sitting at her husband's feet while a women's rights march was happening that day.

SOMEHOW, my mom, who was into a lot of New Age stuff back then, never did EST. I did have a friend who did it, but she walked out half-way through.

There was a movie made during the 70s called Semi-Tough that did a very funny take-down of EST. It's mainly a sports comedy (about football). Kind of a forgotten movie but it's really good.
