On the topic of casting, Y&R hasn’t had a Casting Director since Nancy Nayor left over a year ago. Casting Associate Gregory Salmon is the only one listed in the credits - Casting Associates are responsible for casting dayplayers, those with 5 lines or less, and extras. Perhaps one of Scott’s first order of business is to find an actual Casting Director.

I thought Judy Blye Wilson was still casting director?! Damn. But yes, they need a casting director, amongst other roles within the company.

I do wonder if Scott was consulting behind the scenes a bit before this announcement. A new Newman Ranch set is apparently debuting this week - and I damn well know Josh Griffith wasn’t overseeing that.

I look forward to seeing that set because those angles look quite similar to the original ranch set.

MTS has talked for years about how much she missed the old set (though, it was apparently very fragile and breaking apart towards the end, which is why they ditched it). I wouldn’t be surprised if her hubby’s first move is to help give her that type of set back. 😂

4. Direction. A lot of scenes are pretty static talking heads.

I feel like that's where Ed Scott could make the most difference.  We know budgets aren't what they used to be, but a smaller budget is no excuse for scenes that just lay there on the screen, with no dramatic or visual appeal whatsoever.  If anything, not having the money you used to should force you to be more creative in that aspect, if only to distract the audience from the rest of the shitty production values, lol.

Thank you for saying this. I’ve never understood why the lower budgets meant it still couldn’t be filmed interestingly. As you said that should be more the norm these days to cover for budgets.

Looks like the directors have just gotten into a rut. Having talking head scenes means that everything can be done quickly. Whereas actors moving and choosing interesting camera shots takes more time.

Time = money.

I think they are now doing 5 shows in 4 days.

The Covid protocols also didn’t help production matters and I think they just stuck to some of those “quick fixes” long after things subsided.

Possibly, but I do know cutting budget did not help things out, especially at CBS.

Yep, and I think even at B&B the cuts to budget have been apparent.

Mhmm, but Sony Television severely cut Y&R's budget... even going as far as to remove the over-night set crew, hence why we generally had community sets.

It makes you wonder how they even found money to re-do that Newman Ranch set or how they got that approved.

Seems like they’re smarter ways to work around the budget limitations, but no one cared or put any thought into it. That’s probably why Ed Scott is back on board in the first place - they needed someone with keen production expertise to navigate the resources they have.
