GH: August 2024 Discussion Thread

At least DAYS makes an attempt before they all quit or Ron blinks and decides to start over again. There have been many attempts at a younger and 30 age set of characters on DAYS. Frank has just given up on GH. All those younger characters featured when Jason returned were just quietly ignored. On DAYS they would have been swapping beds weekly.

True.  It's weird because in the Riche era GH excelled at bringing in younger characters to mix with "older" ones.   And then Guza/JFP just killed half of them off

ICAM. I think the early 00s were the last time soaps invested in young people. I guess the cancellations scared them and now they are too scared to turn beloved 80s and 90s characters into "old people" or even let them go. There is no room for young people because the veterans play their stories.
Of course I wouldn't want soaps to go crazy and fire everyone who is getting older like they did in the 80s, but they should at least give them suitable material.

Another problem is casting. The young actors who get cast are not always very charismatic. I think TPTB do it on purpose because the stars are the veterans.

Lazy writing and propping.

I felt PM was going to, but we still would have had Ava around for a while. And I trusted he could find the right wiggle room to keep her on the canvas as well. Because the Ava on screen during his run was smart, cunning, and making moves on AND off screen.

Amen.

Oh, do speak your thoughts.

I did not enjoy Jacqueline Grace Lopez as Blaze, but I am struck that they dumped her this quickly and with such a ho-hum exit lacking emotion.

Getting rid of the gay character and keeping the homophobe? Wow...that's special. And now Natalia gets Sonny -- a lowlife mobster -- to buy her way into Deception? I thought that company worried about public relations. Oh, that was covered by "I'll be a silent partner." GMAFB.

I hate Natalia more today than I did yesterday. Good job, GH.

BTW, was anyone else struck that JGL didn't mention Kate Mansi in her long goodbye message? It's pretty standard to mention someone you shared that much screen time with, so it seems intentional not to mention her.

After all, she had time to be "grateful to Frank" while twice making it clear she was blindsided by being cut.

Not me, I don't think Patrick was going to terminate Ava. The whole world seems to think there's a target on her back & they've been thinking that for months now. I just don't see her in the crosshairs. This, Kristina getting hurt, losing the baby & Ava being suspiciously close to the situation, yes, that I've thought about.

I am a completely biased human, but on days like this it just seems like it would have been easier if Frank just felt like talking to Vanessa Marcil?  Because Brenda would have actually fit into Deception?  Instead the show just a gets a similar famous name with a similar look and style and makes her a bigot to insert her into stories she doesn't belong?

I obviously would never want Brenda as Blaze's mom or a bigot (which Vanessa would never play due to obvious reasons), but it just seems like the simplest solution to fill the space Natalia gets.  I'll never stop pushing the agenda

.  It's very annoying.   It's not even as if ELR is boring or bad in general.  It's just some stories almost write themselves and positioning her this way is just going to fail.  I predict 6 months before ELR is dumped.

Ava's been the scapegoat on and off for years depending on the writing team

    • And her evolution was so subtly done. There was nothing like the depraved shows later on, like Game of Thrones, where they said a woman needed to be raped in order to find empowerment. The layers of Laura were what got me hooked on Knots, somewhere in the season 3 repeats. And I agree that her becoming a therapist would have made sense - look at how much her trauma over her mother drove her decisions early on.
    • I think that the problem with Laura was that she had grown to love herself and saw her value in both herself, her career, and her marriage.  She had this inner strength and confidence that Lynn/Bernard didn't know how to harness/write for because they were more interested in generating conflict amongst emotionally immature people. Karen/Mac and Gary/Val were all immature/stubborn to a fault even though they all had grown/evolved.  So the Latham's could key into their essence/history to generate the standard soap opera tropes and stories for them. Even the season 8 conflict with Laura's pregnancy and Greg not being cool with it didn't diminish Laura's fire and strength.  You saw how she was able to move on and live her life as a single mother because she'd already done that after Richard took off.   I saw her response to Greg's kissing Paige as 'that's my husband and I can't change him.. but once I find something better, I'll toss himself'.  She wasn't emotionally tied to him nor his money.. and I think that was partly why she was such a unique and interesting character in the nighttime soap world in the 80s.
    •   They actually had great chemistry to as friends in the scene I felt. A shame it was the first onscreen interaction. Looks better than Bill/Hayley’s house. I absolutely loved that! I feel the exact same way. This is just facts. Those scenes today between them were electric.
    • If The Real Housewives of Dubai is on hiatus/pause (a.k.a. done), then we need a way for Caroline Stanbury to come back to Ladies of London.
    • I hate quick snip scenes.  Such a tired hold-over from the 1980s.  And that nonsense does not belong on BTG.  Bring back the long scenes.
    • And a great......and a great.....
    • Eva packing, thinking about how good the Richardson's house smells.

    • In light of yesterday's news...I figured it was okay to bump this up. And probably do a rewatch.

    • I don't really read spoilers, but Perry Shen seems to come and go so even if this is an "exit" it's probably not permanent.
