Agree about the looser scripts. I don't see any of that either.

I also agree -- wholeheartedly -- about the writing. It's great that we're getting Bope back, and I know that's costing some $$$, but it's not enough.

There's so much "dumb stuff" that it's breathtaking. I can live with the Heaven scenes, but only in a limited way. What we're getting is bonkers and annoying, and I don't trust any executive with telling Ron to shut that stuff down.

Unless they find a writer who's a REAL visionary I still think Ron's their best fit vs. the typically rotated assortment of daytime writers.

I don't believe I've watched any of the shows Mulcahey wrote when he wrote them so I can't say whether I'd like him or not. I'd give him a chance though.

One of the things I like about Ron is how he pays homage to history and blends different eras together. The show has an identity under him and even though it's a mess right now, at least I'm watching.

All it takes is thinking about the snooze parade of Tomlin, Whitesell, Higley, McPherson, etc. to appreciate Ron. He needs a co-HW though.

Rex lives in Chicago.

I don't know where in Africa Bill Horton lived.  I don't know where in Africa Steve and Kayla lived. Were they ever specified as being in any specific country?

As mentioned above, Shawn and Belle live in Salem and were only visiting Claire in Johannesburg for Christmas/New Years.  When Marlena was dying, Shawn and Belle decided that Belle would fly immediately to Salem but Shawn should stay in Johannesburg a little longer with Claire due to her mental health issues, because Claire might be upset/triggered by the ladies dying. The plan was for Shawn to return to Salem soon. Who knows what will happen with that.

Serena, Xander, and Eric all lived in the Congo.  Eric later returned to the Congo.

I don't know the original scenes on regular Days but that connection was mentioned in Beyond Salem.

Something that is really stand out about the town of Salem is that a great many people who live there are interconnected with each other & have been for decades!!! This show is being written as if these people do not know each other a'tall much less have common life experiences! And, I don't understand why. And, somehow that seems worse than just saying pacing, balance & use of personnel are appalling.

I feel like in Salem this would be no big deal, and it might not even make news in The Spectator

Also, given the discussion about the paucity of real estate in Salem, do we think Bo and Hope are going to be bunking on the sofa in the Horton living room or will Belle give them back the bed where the devil assaulted their son Shawn?

Finally, I still don't get the logic why Will has to go to New Zealand to write a script for a movie to be shot there?  I'm pretty sure the Lord of Rings script wasn't written on site.  And soaps are famously written by people who are never on set.  So, why does Will need to move, but Sonny can still run a company remotely?  At least it solves the issue of Gabi needing dialogue about who is taking care of her kid.

I watched the first dialogue and then I was done. I just didn’t like seeing Bill playing it. I know the show is tight on who is available but nothing said the devil had to be played by a days actor or character.

Well, I will differ on this. Again, I thought Bill did a great job & was well used. The first time he was DevilDoug in demonic possession 2.0 was one of the 2 scripts that won them last years' WGA & Writing Emmy. I thought that script was sound, valid, tight, really well-written. So, there's that. FWIW to ya.

It’s not that I didn’t think he would do a good job as the devil. I saw this mentioned on another board and it had me thinking. Granted tomorrow is not promise to anyone. But thinking back to John Aniston and his last scene. Bill is older as well and to think what if this was his last scenes. Not like how I would like to see him play his last scenes. But not too get to dark.

I think just in this case this is not a possession SL right now. This heaven and hell or at least this is how it’s written. So the devil could have been played by an extra. Personally I think it would have been more interesting and added something unexpected to todays scenes.

    • Agree with all of this. They use stuff like the redecoration and the party as major events and nothing comes of it. Kyle/Claire is of no interest to me because Kyle has already been deeply in love with Lola and summer so his devotion to Claire is more of the same. And Claire is a character that came from a nonsense rewrite and now is presented as Little Miss Innocent, her dark past swept away. That charm bracelet of Nikki's must weigh a ton. The list of grandchildren seemed endless. The thing is, most of them are offscreen and ignored. Victoria seems like a neglectful parent. Was Dylan mentioned? Another dumb rewrite character. Not only is the show hampered by so many vet charcters, TPTB don't seem interested in venturing into new areas with them. Cole was brought by but there hasn't been any dramatic story that could impact on Victoria? What had he been doing all those years? So many characters w/o stories talking about businesses we never see.
    • I thought it was Sherry Stringfield, but maybe it was before Blake slept with Ross.
    • Thank you for the great background and summary - very helpful!  Yes, very odd they never brought her back, but at least J mentioned her, so not truly forgotten. Ah interesting, I guess I never realized that CBS was a bit more conservative/old-fashioned in a way, at least pre-2000 or so. It's funny, I wrote that about slapping, and then a few episodes later, Vivian storms into the Spaulding mansion and slaps Alan. It's like I spoke it into existence.

    • When written correctly or played correctly the antagonist will often have a sizable following, although this can go too far. It's why having a balance and allowing your heroes to be called out by other characters is so important. Speaking of that, I did not realize Sonni got a lengthy montage when Michelle Forbes left, or that Pam Long was willing to showcase Sonni/Josh so much for her farewell. The care taken reminds me of when Anne Heche left AW a few years later. Given that Sonni was brought in an as interloper, it shows just how much respect the show had for Michelle's talents and how much she captivated viewers in those two years.

Oh I think Holly gives Blake a smack in the mouth. I think it was during Liz's early days as Blake as that is when they become estranged for a good while, although I may be wrong.
    • Billy slapping Mindy is a turning point in '90. And I feel there was a slap between Holly and Blake during the Ross thing.
    • That definitely was her voice.
    • I was going to put this Lisa Brenner interview in the AW thread but I'm not sure she says much about AW in it. I admittedly skipped around a lot as the interviewer's style annoyed me.

    • Today was amazing, for so many reasons. Others have complained certain stories are dragging and others have rightly pointed out, the show only premiered THREE MONTHS AGO! Yes, the caps are dramatic, but I think they seize the moment appropriately. I have watched more than a few soap opera debuts. BTG, is by far, the best, first three months of a show, I have ever seen. MVJ, rightly, found the best in the business to avoid as my pitfalls as they could, to get the show settled quickly. They have found their footing. Is it perfect, no, but is it as close to excellence I've seen this quickly, yes. I loved today's scenes, particularly with Anita. That voice reading the letter, sounded like June

      to me.
    • GH has to be the only soap that still has a courtroom set and I appreciate that as I love courtroom drama on soaps.
