The Kate Bush Thread

Seems like there are a few fans here (I am one of them), and since Stranger Things has introduced her brilliance to new generations, I figured she might be worthy of her own dedicated thread.

I’ve been so happy to see her pop up on her website thanking fans for the recent chart success of “Running Up That Hill,” but BBC Radio 4 just released a rare treat—a new interview with her. Lovely to hear her voice in 2022:

Has anyone ever mentioned that Babooshka is the female version of Rupert Holmes' Pina Colada Song?

Babooshka lyric

She wanted to test her husband
She knew exactly what to do
A pseudonym
To fool him
She couldn't have made a worst move
She sent him scented letters
And he received them with a strange delight

Escape (Pina Colada)

I was tired of my lady
We'd been together too long
Like a worn out recording
Of a favorite song
So while she lay there sleepin'
I read the paper in bed
And in the personal columns
There was this letter I read

LOL I’d never made that connection. I see others have too.

She was never more than a cult artist here in the U.S., but RUTH did make the Top 30 in its original release. And of course she contributed to popular songs like Peter Gabriel’s “Don’t Give Up”:

I first learned of her in a Entertainment Weekly review in the ‘90s where the critic compared Jewel’s “Foolish Games” to Kate lol. I was a tyke in ‘80s so I didn’t have a deep knowledge of anyone beyond what I saw on MTV, BET, and VH1 or on the radio.

I always wanted to twirl through a forest like this:

Oh god. I hate jukebox musicals. I’d rather see Kate create a completely new work if she were to involve herself in musical theater. Or do like Pet Shop Boys did with Closer to Heaven and use a couple of older songs as a jumping-off point for a mostly new work.

I think the actual performed/scripted components of her last live exhibition ("Before the Dawn") a few years ago - featuring her grown son, etc, which had actual characters and a narrative based on the Hounds of Love album, IIRC - are probably as close as anyone will get to a stage show and IMO that's for the best. Did they ever release Before the Dawn as a filmed DVD/Blu-Ray? They definitely released it as an album.

I had no idea Kate did a series of Fruitopia jingles (all in this playlist, which can't be embedded).

AFAIC Kate is up there with Prince - the incredibly layered, innovative and avant-garde soundscapes they created then, particularly in the various phases of the Hounds of Love album, were and are decades ahead of their time, still today.

It’s great that Kate and Prince had such mutual love and respect. Their collaborations were very fascinating. Game recognized game:

A Kate cover of “The Long and Winding Road” I posted this weekend for McCartney’s 80th birthday:

    • I'm curious the motivation for keeping Bela on beyond the circus story arc.  Did he play a character like his character on EON, or was he more of a good guy? I know he ended up with Sunny at the end of the series, but I always thought that Sunny/Hogan could have been revived once the lack of chemistry between him and the NuLiza became apparent.   Actually... the NuLiza (Louan Gideon) reminded me more of Sunny than she did Liza as played by Sherry... and she just threw off the whole vibe of the show. I see Estelle has just arrived in the late October 1985 episodes, which only means that Wendy and Stephanie are soon on their way out.   It also appears that the Sarah/Quinn/Wendy triangle was set up by Mayer.. and it looks as though Tomlin is going to deactivate it by the introduction of Colleen Dion's character.   I don't understand why no one on the show thought to look at Quinn and realize that he was the problem and write him out.

    • I kind of assume they're toning down Rachel's bad seed tendencies a bit to make it less obvious if they're going for her as the shooter. At least that's what I hope they're doing - I've really enjoyed Rachel being a bratty evil DiMera princess and Marlena finally getting a grandchild she deserves.

. This show is so stupid. Sonny killed an FBI agent less than a year ago by shooting him at point blank range. But the new short bald man is much much worse cause he was a bad guy in some part of Africa and managed to not kill Lucky, Isaiah, Jason, or Anna. This show is crippled by the mob all these years after Guza has been long gone.    Laura is literally saying oooo but Sonny is a good mobster for Port Charles. Give me a [!@#$%^&*].ing break. Sometimes I don’t know why I watch this joke of a show.
    • With all the changes Sunny was one of the longest running characters by that time.  She had never been married and had heaps of story potential. I can see America getting with SFT -you know 'the circus soap'. Smart move because circuses were all the rage with the kids in the 80's. Maybe Stu and Jo could have bought the circus.
    • It is actually pathetic, that Victor’s 50 year old children are still written as scared of this man that has to sit in every scene. I get it, EB has been on the show for almost 50 years, but I don’t care. He’s a man in his 80’s and should not be the damn lead and driving force because you don’t want to upset Eric Braeden ‘s fragile ego that only exists because the writers have cowtowed to this man for so long.
    • PREACH Victor being written as he was 20 years ago to support EB's ego or some misguided belief that what worked decades ago is still relevant is destroying the show. Victor comes off as a rambling old fool holding on to vendettas and a desperate need for perceived power. His children still cow-towing to him makes them look equally foolish. If the writing portrayed Victor as  more of an irritant to them then maybe it would work.
    • They desperately need another meeting spot that isn’t Orphy Genes or the Country club. Y&R is awful now but there’s at least GCAC, Crimson Lights, Society, and the Jazz room at GCAC to meet at. 4 places is definitely better than 2 and I can’t imagine these rich folks literally only eat at their damn country club.
    • I support all of this. 80 year old Victor reading lines off the table or teleprompter until it’s time to yell at someone and still being the main man driving story on the show is absolutely ridiculous to me and one of the biggest issues with the show. I respect Braeden for wanting to keep working in his old age is great and all, but WHY IS HE THE LEAD?
