ARTICLE: Prime Video Orders Fourth Season of ‘The Boys’ Featuring Soap Alums Miles Gaston Villanueva and Jensen Ackles

One week after premiering the first three episodes of the show’s current third season, Prime Video has ordered a fourth season of “The Boys,” the streaming service announced today. The series follows what happens when superheroes—who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians, and as revered as gods—abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. The service cites the show’s tremendous success wherein after just the first three days of its third season, the worldwide audience for “The Boys” has grown by +17% from season two, and +234% from season one.

In “The Boys,” viewers find themselves rooting for a group of vigilantes intent on stopping the corrupt superheroes by continuing their heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven and Vought—the multibillion-dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and covers up their dirty secrets, even when they are seemingly powerless against the super-powerful. 

Season Three stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Jensen Ackles, an alum of “Days of our Lives.” Also appearing this season is Miles Gaston Villanueva (“The Young and the Restless”) as Supersonic, one of the newest members of The Seven. Ackles plays the role of Soldier Boy, the very first Superhero is said to bring “humor, pathos, and danger to the role,” so said showrunner Eric Kripke when he landed the actor for the series.

“From our first conversation with Eric Kripke and the creative team about Season Three of ‘The Boys,’ we knew the show was continuing to get even bolder—an impressive feat considering the wild success of the Emmy-nominated second season,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television, Amazon Studios. “‘The Boys’ continues to push boundaries in storytelling while also being relentlessly entertaining and threading the needle on social satire that feels all too real. This stylized world of the series has incredible global reach and the viewership for opening weekend is proof of that. We are immensely proud of the cast and crew that has spawned a franchise for Prime Video, and we look forward to bringing more of ‘The Boys’ to our customers.”

Based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, who also serve as executive producers, and developed by executive producer Kripke, “The Boys” is produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television Studios, with Kripke Enterprises, Original Film, and Point Grey Pictures.

New episodes are being released every Friday and lead up to the epic season finale on Friday, July 8.

Since he last appeared on “The Young and the Restless” in 2016 as Luca Santori, Villanueva has had roles on such shows as “Jane the Virgin,” “Rosewood,” “For The People,” “The Resident” and “Nancy Drew.” In 2017, he played Lyle Menendez in the ripped from the headlines limited series, “Law & Order: True Crime.” The actor also appeared on “Days of our Lives” for a time.

Ackles played Eric Brady from 1997-2000 on “Days of our Lives.” He later starred in such shows as “Dark Angel,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “Smallville” before landing the role of Dean Winchester in the long-running drama “Supernatural.” The series wrapped its record-breaking 15-season run in 2020, making it the longest-running drama in The CW’s history and the longest-running series to come out of the merger of The WB and UPN in 2008.
